Name Etymology[]

In Japanese, Akane's first name means "madder", a plant used for producing red dye, which could be a reference to her reddish-brown eyes and hair. Her last name, Taira, uses the kanji 平 (tai) meaning "flat" or "even". It can also mean "low-ranking employee", perhaps referring to Akane's occupation as a maid. The second last name kanji, 良 (ra), means "good" or "pleasing".

There are a few possible interpretations for Akane’s surname. The first kanji of her surname can also be combined with other kanji characters, for example 平ら (taira), which literally means "even", but it could also mean "smooth", and 平和 (heiwa) meaning "peace" or "harmony", both pertaining to her personality. Another one is 平凡 (heibon), meaning "ordinary" and "common", which describes how Akane sees herself, but ironically, her talent and fame as the Super High School Level Maid contrasts this.

Appearance[]

DRA - Akane Taira - Full Body Sprite (HD) (38)

Akane is a fairly young woman who has light skin, cinnamon brown eyes and long dark ginger hair that is put up into a ponytail and held in place by dark red ribbons on each side.

Akane's outfit is a reminiscent of a French maid. Her maid uniform consists of a black dress that reaches halfway down her thighs and has white puffed sleeves and trim, a white half apron tied back with a large white bow and a black choker necklace. On top of her head is a black and white laced headdress. She also wears knee-length white socks, black silk bracelets on both wrists and black flat shoes with scarlet bows on each. The majority of her clothes have white lace frills on them.

When she’s the Ultimate Despair, her hair is down and messy. Her maid's outfit no longer has the apron, headdress, red hair ribbons and choker. Other than that, her outfit is the same.

Up until the investigation in Chapter 4, she wears her ballroom outfit, which consists of a black floor-length dress with a sweetheart neckline that hugs her figure, two gold chain belts draped loosely over her hips, a black choker with a gold charm, a large black bow and black gloves that almost reach her elbows. The colour of her shoes is unknown. She wears her hair entirely down and tied back using the bow.

Initial Design and Others[]

There's not much different from the current design, however there was supposed to be blush constantly on her face at all times. She was supposed to be more playful and goofier, but that was passed down to Satsuki Iranami instead. Her beta personality is better described as her mastermind personality with a bit more humor. She was a character whose fate was decided when created.

Personality[]

Akane is a friendly girl who is able to lighten the atmosphere. Even though she is working as a maid, she takes great pride in her job, and dislikes being compared to "part-timers who work in a maid cafe". While she can be scary when she's angry, Akane is generally a cheerful, kind, and caring person.

When she's the Ultimate Despair, she is excessively devoted to her master, Utsuro, going along with everything he desires and pledging her life to his. However, she does go against his wishes in her final moments of the Killing Game, so she can to allow the survivors to escape.

History[]

Early Life[]

Akane was orphaned when she was a baby, since her parents had passed away. She was then raised in an orphanage, and when it closed, she was forced into the streets. Having been taught about cooking and cleaning in the orphanage, Akane worked as a maid for several houses and mansions. Unfortunately, her payments were ridiculously low, and as such, she was unable to enter school for education. After some time working as a maid, Akane became famous for her excellency in her maid work, working for rich people and gaining fame for her flawless feats as a maid. This caused Kibōgamine Gakuen to scout Akane to be the Super High School Level Maid for the year.[3]

Killing Game[]

Prologue[]

Akane is one of the fourteen students to introduce herself to Yuki Maeda in the entrance hall of Kibōgamine Gakuen. After Yuki concludes introducing himself to everyone, the fifteen of them began to enter the Kibōgamine Gakuen building. However, after their first step, they all lost consciousness from an unknown cause, later waking up in classrooms.

After she woke up, she went to the entrance hall and waited for the others to gather back in the entrance hall. Yuki was the last person to get there, when an anonymous announcement revealed by the soon-to-be-met Monokuma, directing the students to the gymnasium. Without other options, the fifteen students gathered in the gym. They soon meet Monokuma, who introduces them to the killing game.

Chapter 1[]

The first day of the killing game, she investigates the school with Kanata Inori and Kiyoka Maki, attempting to find a way outside, but finds the windows were covered with metal plates and some doors didn't open. The next morning, she is found by Mitsuhiro Higa, who harasses her by asking for "physical affection". She is saved by Yuki when he finds the two, and Mitsuhiro would run away. Akane and Yuki then investigate the antique shop together. She is the first person to get close to Yuki and she's also the first person who Yuki has a free time event with. A few days later, Monokuma would hand out the first motive in the form of a video. After being alerted to the A/V room by Yuki's scream, she, like everyone else, would watch their video. The contents of her video are unknown, but she is very distressed after watching it. The next day, she is the first one to find Kiyoka's body in the girl's bathroom, and her scream alerts Yuki and Ayame Hatano to the scene.

Chapter 2[]

After Mitsuhiro’s execution, Tsurugi Kinjo decided to make a group to ensure the safety of the students. Everyone, including Akane, joins the group with the exceptions of Kizuna Tomori, Rei Mekaru, and Kinji Uehara. The students would investigate the places that had newly opened up after breakfast, Akane investigating the bathhouse on the dorm floor alongside Kizuna and Haruhiko Kobashikawa. Once back at the dining hall to corroborate their findings, Akane slaps Tsurugi due to her outrage at his dismissive and sacrificial attitude towards the students that chose not to join him. The next day, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and give them the second motive: each other's secrets. While the students aren't allowed to choose their own secret, they are allowed to choose each other's secrets. Akane's secret and the secret she receives is unknown. Later that day, Kizuna is found crying by Akane and Yuki. The next day, Akane mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin. Kizuna accepts.

That same day, she gets asked to come at night to the Switchium by Kizuna, where Kizuna tries to get her to join in on a plan to kill Yuki. After Akane refuses, Kizuna attempts to kill her, but because they were in complete darkness in the struggle, Akane ends up accidentally stabbing her in the stomach. Once Kizuna lets go of her due to the stab wound, she runs out with blood on her hands, and is seen by Ayame, who kills Kizuna to prevent Akane from getting executed.

After the body discovery announcement, Akane and Mikako Kurokawa would be the first people on the scene. After the second investigation began, Akane is notably in panic. When Yuki asks her where she was before the announcement, she responds with that she was cooking, then went to the bathroom to wash her clothes after a cooking mishap. She would also mention Ayame was in the training room.

After Ayame is executed, Akane goes into a state of shell-shock due to her death.

Chapter 3[]

The day after Ayame is executed, the students would investigate the places that had newly opened up. Due to her grief, Akane would not investigate, and would tell Yuki to leave her alone when he tried to comfort her through the door to her dorm. The next day, Akane would join Yuki and the group for breakfast, though she would still be in her shell-shocked state, only talking when she says Ayame's last name brokenly when Kakeru Yamaguchi mentioned her.

The next day, Monokuma would call the students to the gym and present the third motive to them, a video that would show the students their desires or something they want to obtain. Unlike the first motive videos, these videos would be viewed in a soundproofed dark room, so no one other than the student viewing each video could see. The students are also told they can't say tell anyone else the contents of their video or show their reactions. The contents of Akane's video were Ayame blaming her for her death, but the order the students went in is also largely unknown. Everyone was extremely uncomfortable by the time the motives ended. Shortly after Monokuma left, Akane would snap out of her shell-shocked state, screaming and running out of the gym. The others would question why she did so, with Kinji proposing it may have been due to the motive video. The students, excepting Rei, Mikako and Kinji would go to find Akane, eventually finding her in her dorm room.

Late the next day, Akane would be found by Haruhiko, Satsuki, Teruya Ōtori, Mikako and Yuki. She would be covered in blood due to an attempt at killing herself, saying she had to get to Ayame due to the contents of her motive video. Mikako would calm her down, but after attempting to say that Akane is "so much more", she would collapse from a headache.

The next day, Yuki, Satsuki, Haruhiko, Teruya and Akane would congregate in the dining hall for breakfast, Akane being back to her bright, normal self. The group soon became confused at Kakeru's and Kanata's absences, and when Mikako comes in late, they worriedly begin looking for the pair. Akane, along with Haruhiko and Mikako, find Kinji unconscious on the second floor with a bloody head. Satsuki, Teruya and Yuki would come, and Kinji would wake up shortly after. He is confused at the scene, saying he remembered going to the library at night, then a pain in his head, but can't remember anything after that. They all then hear a banging noise coming from the third floor, electing to split into two groups to investigate the two floors. Akane, along with Satsuki, Teruya and Haruhiko, opt to search the second floor.

Akane would investigate the library and see the entrance covered in blood. She would open the door to find Kakeru's corpse and Tsurugi unconscious on the ground. The body discovery announcement for Kanata would sound, but she would be under the impression it was for Tsurugi. The body discovery announcement for Kakeru would then sound, and then everyone on the third floor would come and tell her about Kanata. Everyone excepting Rei, Yuki and Akane would then take Kinji and Tsurugi to the infirmary to take care of their wounds. Shortly after she told Yuki about what had happened to her everyone would return and Monokuma would appear. Monokuma gives them the Monokuma files 3-1 for Kakeru and 3-2 for Kanata. Everyone is concerned about the prospect of a serial killer, so Monokuma implements the rules that no student can kill more than two people and that no one can kill after an investigation has started.

Chapter 4[]

The day after Kinji's execution, Akane would come to Yuki's dorm and ask him to come to breakfast, saying that Haruhiko, Teruya and Mikako wouldn't come as they decided to rest. After breakfast ends, the students excepting Haruhiko, Teruya and Mikako would begin investigating the fourth floor. Akane would investigate the hallways and classrooms with Satsuki, avoiding the school office as Tsurugi was in there. After the investigations, Haruhiko and Teruya would join in on the investigation reports. They present their findings, but Yuki grows despairful and can't understand why Akane is able to be so hopeful. Akane grows angry and almost slaps Yuki before running out of the dining hall.

The next morning, Monokuma would call all the students to the ballroom. When they gather there, Monokuma tells them he prepared a dance party to help lift their spirits up. The students are skeptical, so Monokuma prepares a memorandum that he signs to prove his intentions. The students go into change rooms divided by sex to change into ballroom outfits, Akane is the second one ready and out after Yuki. Monokuma then tells them to form pairs in order to begin dancing, with Akane asking Yuki to form a pair first.

Music begins to play as the pairs dance, and after they are finished dancing, Monokuma leads them to a dining hall to eat. Everyone is lively and having fun until Teruya asks to save some food, and Akane asks to change her clothes, to which Monokuma denies. He then tells the students they aren't allowed to leave or change, and Tsurugi would bolt out of his seat, Rei walking after him. Yuki, Akane, Mikako and Teruya would follow Rei and Tsurugi, while Haruhiko and Satsuki would stay behind and continue to eat.

Upon finding the door was locked, Akane would go to the dressing rooms to find their clothes and student handbooks were taken. Everyone would then go back to the dining hall to find Haruhiko and Satsuki had eaten almost all the food and explain the situation. They would then begin to investigate the ballroom. Akane would investigate the dining hall, discovering there was more food in the fridges while talking with Yuki. After they had reconvened and presented their findings, Monokuma would call them all to the dance hall to distribute keys to the dorm rooms to each student. He would also announce the fourth motive, which is the ballroom itself, making it impossible to leave unless killing someone. Monokuma also tells them that they aren't permitted suicide, and that the reason for getting rid of their clothes was to prevent them from unlocking the door using their student handbooks. They are also told that all rules except the vandalism and violence against Monokuma rules are void while in the ballroom, there is no set 'night time' and the morning and night broadcasts will change.

Monokuma would sound the nighttime broadcast, though they don't have to sleep or stay in their rooms. In order to keep order, Yuki instructs Teruya, Akane, Mikako, Haruhiko and Satsuki to stay in their rooms as normal. The next morning, the six gather in the dining hall, Akane distributing the food in an appropriate way. The six meet back up again at dinner, only to find the amount of food had decreased more than it should have. The same happens again the next morning, so Akane and Yuki both decide to talk to Rei and Tsurugi respectively, as they believe Rei and Tsurugi are exhausting the food supply. Akane talks with Rei in the ballroom dance hall, and Rei would insult her, calling her a pig. That night at dinner, they begin to lose hope about getting out when Monokuma shows up and says they can leave if they kill, but he tells them he'll reward their investigation. Monokuma had hidden a treasure within the ballroom, and would reward the person who finds it. He also mentions that the prize for finding the treasure is something the students have lost.

In the morning on the sixth day, Akane and the other five students in their group find there's no more food left. Mikako accuses Haruhiko of eating some of the food at dawn, saying that she'd been camping at the dining room entrance since the day before. Mikako also says that Satsuki had eaten the food alongside Haruhiko. Teruya becomes livid with them for eating and blaming it on Tsurugi and Rei. Haruhiko attempts to defend himself, but only exposes himself and Satsuki. That night, Teruya voices his despair at the situation, causing everyone to begin fighting, but Rei would walk in to hear the details of the food situation. Mikako tells her what Satsuki and Haruhiko had done, and when Haruhiko attempts to blame her for the food depletion, she says that neither Tsurugi nor her had eaten very much since the second day. She then shows them some food she had found in Teruya's dorm room, saying he had hidden food for himself without the others noticing. Haruhiko becomes angry and gets in Teruya's face to voice his hypocrisy. Haruhiko shoves Teruya into Yuki, and Teruya does the same to Haruhiko. Yuki and Satsuki restrain the two, and Rei comments that means of escape other than murder is impossible.

The next morning, Akane would wait at Yuki's dorm room for him, telling him that besides herself and Mikako, no one else was working together. A day and a half later, Yuki would wake up from an extreme dizzy spell to Akane banging on his door, telling him everyone had thought he was dead. Later that day, Yuki calls everyone besides Tsurugi and Rei to the dining hall to come up with a policy on how to act in the future. Teruya comes up with the idea that two people sacrifice themselves, and opts to pick who by drawing lots. Satsuki, Yuki and Akane agree, but before anyone can do anything else, Tsurugi walks into the dining hall and gives everyone a gun to commit mass suicide. Haruhiko and Yuki attempt to stop him, but Tsurugi throws them into the side of the fridge. Yuki attempts to calm Tsurugi down, and Tsurugi goes to tackle him but trips on a bit of the carpet. The others tie him up, gag him and leave him in his room, Mikako holding his room key in the event he needs to be let out.

The next day, Yuki and Teruya would find Haruhiko's dead body in the arsenal, alerting Akane and the others to the scene and triggering the body discovery announcement. Monokuma immediately gives them all food to recover their stamina in order to investigate, and gives them their normal clothes and student handbooks back.

After Satsuki's execution, everyone excepting Rei goes to Tsurugi's room to check on his wellbeing, however he would not respond. The next morning, Rei would call Akane to her room to for an operational meeting. Once everyone is gathered in Rei's room, she tells them she had created a device that would jam the surveillance camera in her room. They discuss the mysteries surrounding Kibōgamine Gakuen and their imprisonment, as well as finding the identity of the mastermind. Rei also tells them her idea that a long time had passed since they entered the school, and that they just didn't remember it. The morning announcement sounds soon after, and Monokuma would instruct the students to go to the gym. The students, excepting Tsurugi, do so.

Chapter 5[]

Upon meeting in the gym Monokuma introduces a new transfer student as the motive, a boy named Yamato Kisaragi, the Ultimate Inventor. Yamato introduces himself in a joking manner, posing cutely and calling himself an idol, making everyone confused. Monokuma explains he has an abnormality in his brain that causes him to act strangely, and that he was introduced late due to 'circumstances'. When Mikako faints everyone crowds around her to help her. Monokuma then leaves, and the students take her to the infirmary.

Akane, Teruya, Rei and Yuki meet up in Rei's room immediately after taking care of Mikako. The group piece together clues surrounding Yamato, Hanzo Kisaragi, and the Kisaragi Foundation itself, concluding he's the prime candidate to be the mastermind. Monokuma comes in because he hadn't seen any of the students on the surveillance cameras. He also tells them the fifth and top floor of the school had opened. Monokuma then leaves to check the status of the cameras, and the students disperse to investigate the new areas.

Akane investigates the collection room. She mostly investigates a row of photos, fixated on one of Yamato documenting him as the third president of the Kisaragi Foundation. Akane believes the fifth floor is independent from the rest of the school due to its different appearance. When Yuki finds a notebook on a desk, she goes to check it with him. They find articles clipped out of newspapers detailing The World's Most Desperate Event in Human History. Its shows pictures of giant Monokumas and mobs in Monokuma masks and talks about the world being in jeopardy due to terrorist attacks. Akane then walks up to him and he shows her the notebook. She's shocked and confused, as such an event would have garnered media coverage, and Yuki points out the date on the newspapers is in the future. The pair resolve it must be fabricated, and Akane holds onto it until they can discuss it with Rei.

When investigations conclude, Akane, Teruya, Yuki and Rei meet in the dining hall to discuss their findings. They discuss the appearance of the fifth floor and its differences to the rest of the school, guessing its destruction had something to do with the incident that caused Kibōgamine Gakuen to close down. Teruya had found cooking supplies in the parlor, but the atmosphere made it unappealing to cook. Akane mentions the picture of Yamato in the collection room, also mentioning the first and second representatives, Yusaku and Hanzo. Teruya points out Hanzo was the owner of the school yearbook they had found, and Rei is suspicious about the turnover of representatives so quickly, saying it must've been Hanzo at the time of the entrance ceremony. Akane also shows the notebook of newspaper clippings to Teruya and Rei, Rei taking it for safekeeping. Rei says the record room couldn't be entered due to its security measures, and Yuki talks about the dead bodies of the other students found in the lab and the locked door at the end of the right hall. Rei then talks about the now-opened door at the back of the library, telling them the contents of the notebook. Rei deduces Yamato or Mikako had written the diary, and thanks the group for their support of her before leaving. Akane is worried about Tsurugi and Mikako when Monokuma shows up and says he hasn't seen any signs of Tsurugi waking up.

That night, Rei would call Akane, Yuki and Teruya to her room to properly discuss their findings from the investigations. Rei says that her hypothesis that a long time had passed and they just can't remember it might actually be true. When the case of the mastermind is brought up in terms of the amnesia, Rei ponders the possibility of the mastermind also being an amnesiac. She explains that using the technological expertise of the Kisaragi Foundation would make it entirely possible to manipulate, as well as create extremely human-like AI to power Monokuma. Before Rei can say her final piece however, Monokuma comes in because he couldn't see through the surveillance camera yet again. He speculates something had been done to it before slowing down as if he ran out of power. Monokuma slowly powers back up but leaves Rei's room to check the power. Rei ends the meeting and tells them to leave due to Monokuma's suspicions.

The next night, Rei would call Yuki, Akane, and Teruya to her room for the last time. She says that due to a brochure of the second to fifth floors of Kibōgamine Gakuen she had found, she was certain the building they had been in was a building belonging to the Kisaragi Foundation. However, since there was no more information to find, she became discouraged and scared. When Yuki asks why she's suddenly so different, Rei becomes angry and tells him to shut up. Monokuma would come in a bit later due to being unable to see them, and Rei would tell everyone to get out. They wouldn't go into her room again.

On the third night, Akane would go to the dorms after investigating all day to find Yuki, Rei and Teruya in the hall. They tell her they had each received a note from Tsurugi telling them to come to the gym. The four would go to the gym to find Tsurugi in there holding a gun. He explains he had been reflecting on his ideologies and was guilty about being unable to properly protect the other students. Due to this guilt, he shoots himself in the forehead despite everyone pleading with him not to. The body discovery announcement sounds and Monokuma appears, but since it was a suicide there wouldn't be a class trial. Yuki insists Tsurugi is alive, and when Monokuma checks his heart, he finds it still beating. Tsurugi is rushed to the infirmary and Monokuma performs surgery on him, telling the others that the bullet was defective and only hit the skull, saving Tsurugi's life. However, the position of the bullet wound meant Tsurugi would live as a vegetable. Mikako would then run up and ask what had happened, but Rei would tell her not to worry. Monokuma would briefly explain Tsurugi's condition and then leave.

When in the dining hall the next morning, Rei would elect to work together to find more information from Yamato and Mikako. Since Mikako was a dead end, she attempted to speak to Yamato, who would immediately ask where Mikako was. Yuki tells him where she was, and Yamato runs out of the dining hall.

Akane, Rei, Yuki and Teruya would chase him to the fifth floor, finding a fresh bloodstain on the floor. Akane investigates the lab, finding piece of flesh in a large clump on the floor. She wouldn't find anything else due to the sight, and would soon be alerted to the record room by the body discovery announcement for Yamato's death.

During the investigation, she would tell Yuki what she had found, her discovery leading the pair to believe Yamato had died in the lab.

When Yuki is accused of being the killer during the trial, Akane clears his name by saying he couldn't have prepared for the murder the day before, as that's when she was investigating the whole fifth floor the entire day.

After Mikako's execution stops due to a power outage, Tsurugi runs into the trial room and gathers Rei, Yuki and Teruya, telling them he remembered everything and came to save them. He proclaims Akane is the mastermind and calls her the 'Ultimate Despair'.

Upon hearing those words, Akane goes into a state of extreme pain in her head, eventually taking off her apron, choker, hair ribbons and bonnet. She introduces herself as the 'Ultimate Despair' as the spare power turns on. While she says that disposing of them would be easy, she still had to meet with someone, so she'd let them through to the final stage.

Chapter 0[]

Akane talks with Ayame at the back of the classroom. When Yuki talks with her, she'd ask him what's wrong and wouldn't say anything else. When talking with Ayame, Ayame would voice her discomfort at Akane's habit of calling everyone 'master', and Akane would resolve to try and not do it. Ayame would also tell Akane she felt uncomfortable at being unable to run due to getting banned from places, and Akane would propose she train in the gym.

When Yuki finished talking with everyone, time would stop, and he and Akane would talk again. She would cryptically tell him there's things you don't do no matter what, and asks what he would do if he was forced into such a situation, she would begin to say what she would do, but she would be cut off.

When everyone had gathered in the dining hall after Yuki woke up from passing out, Akane would explain there is one more class trial to be held. She'd first ban Tsurugi from telling the others too much about what he remembers, and explains the true events behind Yamato's death. She then opens up the locked areas of the school and allows Tsurugi, Rei, Teruya and Yuki free reign to investigate and find the truth of their situation.

Chapter 6[]

Akane would allow Tsurugi to tell Yuki about the difference in his personality from their school life to the killing game despite his ban. She would also allow Teruya, Rei and Yuki to go through the locked door on the fifth floor, revealing to them they were on an island when they see a beach outside the building.

Akane would primarily run the class trial, prompting the group's questions and answers. She'd explain parts of the truth, like that Monokuma was the one behind the conversion of the lab into a school, and that the killing game was partially to test Monokuma's A.I. When the truth is fully uncovered, Akane would get annoyed ask why 'he' hasn't appeared yet. In a final try to get 'him' to come back, she'd ask each of them their origins. Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya would each answer it easily, but Yuki is unable to remember the name of his mother and school. This prompts him to experience a headache that makes him scream.

During a flashback within Yuki's mind, Utsuro would meet with Akane in an empty classroom. She'd say she'd done as she was told and mingled with their classmates, and would question if going along with Junko's plans was the best thing to do. He'd admonish her for thinking out of line, and she'd tearfully apologise, showing great dependency on Utsuro. Ayame would come in as she'd heard someone crying, and Akane would quickly cover their tracks by saying she'd assisted Utsuro in finding something, then leave with Ayame to help with the cleaning.

In a realm of his subconscious, Yuki would be forced to pick between two doors, a white door and a red door. Each door would lead to a different outcome depending on who assumed control and who disappeared.

Hope/Bad Ending[]

If Yuki chooses the white door, he remains Yuki Maeda, and Utsuro is gone forever. When Akane realises this, she is livid at losing her master, but eventually knows it happened because of Utsuro's lack of will to live. Yuki would regain all his memories and actions as Utsuro, and Akane would be grateful for Utsuro's help to her life. However, when Yuki demands she let them go, Akane would lament the possibility of changing Utsuro's mind before everything happened, and would allow a Monokuma to impale Yuki on its paw. Her crying would be the last thing Yuki would hear.

Despair/True Ending[]

If Yuki chooses the red door, he'd disappear forever and Utsuro would assume his identity. Utsuro's presence is made known and he introduces himself, telling Akane to keep quiet. When Teruya wonders how both masterminds survived and were able to regain their memories, Akane would explain that Utsuro has 'heavenly luck', which is the ability to bend the world to his wants and will. Utsuro resolves to end the killing game by killing Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya, but Akane would be apprehensive. After the trio are sent into despair when Utsuro tells then the truth about their families, he would summon Monokumas to kill them. When Monokumas get too close to them however, Akane would beat them until they couldn't work, her disobeying of his orders prompting Utsuro to order Akane's death as well.

Just before they die, the monitor Monokuma was using to observe the trial is overwritten by an Alter Ego of Yamato. the Alter Ego of Yamato would spur hope in the trio once again, gathering around Utsuro from behind. When a Monokuma advances towards Rei to kill her, Akane would dive in front of her and get her side slashed. When the self-destruct sequence is engaged, Akane would tell them to go, leaving herself and Utsuro behind.

As Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya escape, Akane and Utsuro would remain in the trial room. Akane would tell Utsuro that she felt the need to disobey him because she heard Ayame's voice in her head, telling her she wasn't the kind of person to do this. When she realises Utsuro isn't moving because he's intentionally trying to die, she'd plead with him to leave. When he doesn't, she'd weakly say she'd be with him forever before she goes silent, falling unconscious due to the blood loss. The building would then crash into the sea, drowning her, but Utsuro had transferred his divine luck to her in order for her to survive, leaving her brain dead.

Chapter EX[]

In the non-canonical ending of Chapter EX, Akane is accidentally shot by Tsurugi after she tries to save Utsuro from getting shot.
