Appearance[]

DRA - Ayame Hatano - Full Body Sprite (HD) (23)

Ayame is a young high school girl who has an athletic body. She has rosy tanned skin, deep blue eyes and short black hair that is held back with a red headband. She often lets her hair loose, but she puts it up into a ponytail whenever she's running.[4]

Ayame wears a white sports shirt with red trim underneath a dark crimson red track jacket with light gray edges, which is hanging over her shoulders. She also wears bright red shorts with a white vertical stripe on each side. A patch with the kanji characters "波多乃" (Hatano) printed on it is pasted onto her shirt and the top left side of her shorts. Her signature black sneakers have red accents and the logo of "Mike Shoes" printed on both sides of each shoe. [5]

In her illustration, Ayame wears a white and dark red sports bra with her bib number pinned onto her chest and white and dark red shorts. She also wears white shoes with red crisscrossed laces and red soles.

Initial Design and Others[]

Ayame's initial design, as expected, doesn't have much difference from her official design. One difference to be noted is that she has patterns on her headband, instead of it being blank. When designing Ayame, LINUJ had used many different track girls from different medias to inspire her design. Also in her original design, she wore her jacket on her arms fully instead of having them draped over her shoulders.

Name Etymology[]

Ayame's given name is defined as one of three species of the flower Japanese iris. Her surname, Hatano, uses the kanji 波 (ha) meaning "waves", 多 (ta) meaning "many", and 乃 (no), a possessive particle meaning "of" or "from".

Personality[]

Ayame is a stoic and strong-willed person. Although she appears to be perfectly calm in most situations, she admits that she can be awkward, especially during conversations, and as a result, she has a tendency to ramble and wander off on her own, or not talk much at all. She seems blunt, but can be very kind as well.

History[]

Ayame is one of the fourteen students that appear in the entrance hall of Kibōgamine Gakuen, and the third person to introduce themselves to Yuki. Soon after Yuki concludes introducing himself to the eleven others whom he hadn't spoken to yet, the group of fifteen begin to enter Kibōgamine Gakuen. After the first few steps they all fall unconscious, and wake up in separate classrooms.

When she woke up Ayame was quick to meet everyone else at the Entrance Hall, the place where they originally fell unconscious. Only moments after Yuki had arrived an anonymous announcement played, redirecting the students to the Gymnasium. Without another option all of the students complied and were shocked to see Monokuma appear and announce the beginning of the Killing Game.

The first day of the killing game, Ayame would investigate the school with Teruya and Haruhiko. The three looked around the gym for any hidden stairs or passages, but would be unsuccessful. They also found the second floor of the school was blocked by a wire mesh, and were able to confirm there's cameras everywhere. A few days later, the first motive was handed out in the form of a video, sparking distrust and fear into Ayame. The contents of her video were of an outside world where she couldn't run, as well as her rivals and coworkers being left unable to walk. She attempts to calm everyone down by agreeing with Kanata when she proposes the videos could have been faked. She left shortly after and presumably went to her room to sleep it off. However, when she woke up the next morning Rei and Kiyoka had gone missing without a trace. Ayame and the others investigated the grounds for both of the missing persons. A scream coming from Akane lured Ayame and Yuki over to the girl's bathroom where the three of them discovered the hanging corpse of Kiyoka.

After Mitsuhiro's execution, Tsurugi creates a group to ensure the safety of the students. Everyone, including Ayame, joins, with the exception of Kizuna, Rei, and Kinji. The students would investigate the places that had newly opened up after breakfast, Ayame investigating the training room on the second floor. A few days later, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and give them the second motive: each other's secrets. While they aren't allowed to choose their own secret, they can choose each other's secrets. Ayame's secret and the secret she receives is unknown. The next day, Akane mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin. Kizuna accepts.

That same day, Ayame was walking around when she saw Akane run out of the switchium in a hurry. Alarmed, she decided to investigate what had happened. After Ayame noticed the situation in the switchium, she found Kizuna lying in blood in the switchium, bleeding out. Ayame then took the knife that was stuck in Kizuna's stomach and thrusted it into her neck, severely wounding her. Unbeknownst to Ayame, Kizuna had written ¨Maid¨ on the floor beforehand, when Akane had originally stabbed her, so with the last of her strength, she drew an X to show that Akane was not the killer. Ayame would also set a trap outside the switchium to try and absolve herself of any blame. The trap involved a sharp, thin piece of wire and one of the broken torches placed in a corner near the switchium. When she bought the broken torch to Yuki's attention during the investigation, she would go to retrieve it, purposely cutting the back of her thigh with the wire in the process. This trap would not work however, as she cut the back of her thigh when it logically would've cut the front, and the placing of the wire cut a tendon vital to leg function and walking, something only Ayame would've known and prepared for when placing the wire.

It is revealed in the trial she stabbed Kizuna and made herself the killer in order to protect Akane from becoming a blackened and dying as a result. Ayame would be executed after being caught as Kizuna's blackened.

The execution takes place in a track course. Ayame is strapped into a giant Monokuma runner as a shredder appears behind. The execution starts with the Monokuma runner doing the course and jumping over the hurdles as the shredder follows, shredding the hurdles up front. The Monokuma runner reaches the ¨GOAL¨ flag which turns out to be a giant blade. It runs through the blade and gets cut in half, ultimately slicing Ayame in half as well and killing her. The shredder then catches up and shreds the Monokuma runner and Ayame's corpse.

Legacy[]

In Chapter 0, Ayame talks with Akane at the back of the classroom. She tells Akane about getting banned from places due to her need to train and voices her discomfort at being unable to run. Akane would then propose that she train in the gym, and Ayame would say that she would do so the next day as she would be attending the class-wide activity Haruhiko planned. Ayame would then voice her discomfort at Akane's habit of calling everyone 'master' before noticing Yuki. She would apologize for ignoring him by accident.

In Chapter 6, during a flashback of Utsuro's memories, Ayame walks in on Akane and Utsuro talking as if she'd heard someone crying. Akane would explain that he'd lost something, and she'd just given it back before she asked to help with the cleaning. Ayame would be confused, as Akane had cleaned a couple of days before, but she'd leave with Akane anyway. She'd also ride on the back of Yamato's utility truck to escape the chaos on the day the tragedy broke out.

Talent & Abilities[]

Ultimate Sprinter[]

Danganronpa Another - Ayame Hatano - Talent Introduction

Ayame is said to hold the world record for running 100 meters in a time of 9 seconds.

Ayame's talent becomes useful in the Killing Game, as she is able to run at high speeds to search for missing people, such as Rei and Kiyoka in the first chapter. Perhaps due to this talent, she appears knowledgeable about the tactics of running as fast as possible.

Ayame also seems to have a lot of knowledge about running and races. In a free time event, Yuki may gift her a pair of shoes, and she will ramble about how they impact the speed of the racer, and the racer has no control over speed. It seems to have negatively affected her, but she forgives Yuki easily.
