Name Etymology[]

Name Etymology
Konoe's given name means "tree of wisdom". Her last name, Shimatate, uses the kanji 縞 (shima) meaning "bar" or "streak", and 立 (tate), which is derived from the verb 立てる (tateru), meaning "to stand up", "to establish", or "to make (something) clear". Its other meanings are "to make green tea" or "to perform the tea ceremony", which were later referenced in the titles of the series' original soundtracks.
Chisa's given name means "one thousand grains of sand". Her surname, Kōmyōin, uses the kanji 光 () and 明 (myō) which could both mean "light", but when combined together, it can mean "bright future" or "hope". The last kanji 院 (in) means "institution" or "temple".
Coco's given name is a reference to Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, who is more known as Coco Chanel, a famous French fashion designer and the founder of the Chanel brand. Coco's first name is written in Japanese as 心 (koko), meaning "heart" or "mind", and her surname Hashizawa consists of the kanji 橋 (hashi), meaning "bridge" and 沢 (zawa), meaning "swamp" or "marsh". 沢 can be combined with other kanji, for example 恵沢 (keitaku), which means "blessing", "favor", or "benefit".
David's name is almost entirely written in katakana, so no interpretations can be determined. His surname Masuda, however, is written in kanji, in which 増 (masu) means "to increase" or "to grow", while 田 (da) means "rice field".
Issei's first name means "one existence" or "a lifetime". His surname, Amagaya, is written using the kanji 天 (ama) meaning "sky", 賀 (ga) meaning "congratulation", and 谷 (ya) meaning "valley".
Kinji's given name consists of the kanji 芹 (kin) meaning "parsley", and 次 (ji) meaning "next", "order", or "sequence". His surname Ueda uses the kanji 植 (ue) meaning "plant" or "vegetation", and 田 (da) meaning "rice field".
Koin's given name is written using the kanji 虎 (ko) meaning "tiger", and 音 (in) meaning "sound". His first name could also be a pun on the word "coin", which is one of few objects used in performing magic tricks. His surname, Hatoyama, is written with the kanji 鳩 (hato) meaning "pigeon" or "dove", once again an example of equipment used for pulling a magical trick. The second kanji 山 (yama) means "mountain".
Miharu's first name means "beautiful sun". Her surname Kirigiri is written using the kanji 霧 (kiri), meaning "fog" or "mist", and 切 (giri), meaning "to cut through". This may refer to her ability to solve ("cut") the mysteries ("fog") of a case as a detective. Furthermore, she shares her last name with Kyoko Kirigiri from the official game Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.
Miruku's first name is written with the kanji 実 (mi) meaning "truth" or "reality", 留 (ru) meaning "to stay", and 久 (ku) meaning "a long time". Her first name is a pun on the word "milk", which is written in Japanese katakana as ミルク (miruku), a nod to her talent and origins. Her surname, Hishimeki, uses the kanji 犇 (hishime), meaning "to clamor", "to crowd", or "to jostle", while 木 (ki) means "tree" or "wood". Her last name sounds similar to the verb 犇めき (hishimeki), which has the same meaning as its first kanji.
Retsu's given name literally means "hot", and possibly derived from the phrases 烈しい (hageshī), meaning "intense", "fervent", or "relentless", and 烈烈 (retsuretsu), meaning "fierce" or "violent", which may both refer to his personality. His surname, Matsuoka, uses the kanji 松 (matsu), meaning "pine tree" and 岡 (oka), meaning "hill".
Ryōhei's first name uses the kanji 良 (ryō), meaning "good" or "pleasant", and 平 (hei), meaning "even" or "equal". 平 can also be combined with other kanji to make various interpretations for his name. This includes 公平 (kōhei), which means "fairness", "equality", or "justice", and 平安 (heian) meaning "peace" or "tranquility", referring to his calming nature and presence. His surname Seki means "gate" or "barrier".
Seiha's given name uses the kanji 青 (sei) meaning "blue", and 波 (ha) meaning "waves" or "frequency (of sound)". His last name, Arumada, uses the kanji 有 (aru) meaning "to possess" or "to have", 澗 (ma) meaning "valley river", and 田 (da) meaning "rice field".
Tachihaki's first name uses the kanji 帯 meaning "region" or "zone", and 刀 meaning "sword". His family name, Hatami, consists of the kanji 旗 (hata) meaning "flag" or "banner", and 見 (mi) meaning "looking" or "viewing (something)".

Tachihaki's given name heavily references terms related to swords and other weapons, wherein the first kanji could be possibly derived from the verb 帯びる (obiru) meaning "to wear (a sword), "to carry", or "to be entrusted (with something)". The first meaning "to wear a sword" is referenced in his tarot card illustration, where he is seen carrying a sword. The second kanji 刀 means "single-edged sword" or a katana, which can be changed to 太刀 (tachi). Tachi is a type of traditionally made Japanese swords worn by the samurai class of feudal Japan. The tachi style of swords preceded the development of the katana.

In Chinese, Yukime's given name consists of the characters 雪 (xuě), meaning "snow", and 梅 (méi), meaning "plum flower". Her surname, 梁 (liáng), means "beam of roof" or "bridge". Her surname is also a likely reference to the Chinese calligrapher Liáng Hu, who was introduced during the Han dynasty.

Yukime's name has the same meaning in Japanese, but the readings for each kanji are different. It uses 雪 (yuki) and 梅 (me) for her first name, and 梁 (ryō) for her last name. 梁 also refers to the Liang dynasty in China.

Creation and Development[]

Development for Danganronpa: TheAfter near the end of December 2013 with a casting call started for the characters at an earlier unknown point using the Japanese voice servicing site Koebu to recruit voice actors and such, later closing on the 25th of January, 2014, with an announcement regarding the voice actors made on February 4th. Early bios of the fifteen participants would be released one by one on the 24th of March, and later collectively uploaded to the image sharing site Pixiv on April 30th along with tarot-themed cards based off of the participants and the character profiles for seven of the participants on May 24th.

From may 9th, 2015, to July 18th, 2015, parts of the prologue would be uploaded to the video sharing site NicoNico and YouTube, and an early version for TheAfter’s website would be published by the series creative assistant and planner Harunagi (春薙). Work on Chapter One would continue from throughout 2015 with all of the parts being fully released by August 16h, a year after the production for the chapter started. Chapter Two would then start in late 2016, only three months after Chapter One had finished, with parts frequently uploaded through 2018 until a Data error resulting in the assets having to be recreated caused a postponement for Part 19 and the end of Chapter Two[17]. Between the release of Part 19 a trailer for ‘Change TheAfter’, an April Fools joke that included gender reversed sprites and introductions for all of the participants and Hold Nova, would be released on April 1st in JST, or March 31st in certain areas of the world[18]. The website for TheAfter would be updated to reflect the changes made for Change TheAfter in a subsection of Hold Nova’s bio, and the ‘Complete Edition’ would be uploaded on July 14th of 2019[19]. During the rest of 2019 and 2020 development on the third chapter would progress, and numerous screenshots and gif's have been shared on the creator's official Twitter account.

On November 18th, 2020, the first part of Chapter 3 was uploaded, with the second part being uploaded almost a year later and the third part being uploaded a few months after the second.
