Appearance[]

DRA - Haruhiko Kobashikawa - Full Body Sprite (HD) (20)

Haruhiko is a tall teenager who has tanned skin, red-orange eyes and short dirty blonde hair, which is hidden by a brown hat with an attached pair of black goggles near the front of the hat. When this hat is removed, his hair is tidy, albeit having one area on the right side sticking out.

Haruhiko wears a white long-sleeved shirt which transitions into a brownish pink colour, although it's unknown if this is dirt or not, with a blue gem necklace worn over it. Over the shirt, he wears a sleeveless dark brown jacket with two chest pockets. He also wears dark grey trousers, white socks and brown shoes.

Up until the investigation in Chapter 4, Haruhiko wears his ballroom outfit, which consists of a crimson red suit with three large golden clips keeping it closed as well as yellow-gold outlines, one yellow-gold shoulder pad with dangling yellow strings and a blue piece of cloth attached to it, a plain white shirt, a white ruffled cravat, a grey belt with a yellow-gold metal buckle and grey trousers. The colour of his shoes is unknown.

Initial Design and Others[]

Haruhiko's initial design does vary more than his original compared to other students. In his original design, for example, he wears a tie, instead of a necklace. It was later changed to put emphasis on his laid-back personality. Another change, similar to Kinji, is that he has a tattoo on his left cheek. It was later changed because LINUJ states, "It looks messy." Haruhiko was one of the characters that was decided since he was created, like Yuki and Akane.

Name Etymology[]

Haruhiko's first name uses the kanji 晴 (haru), which is derived from the verb 晴れる (hareru), meaning "to be sunny" or "to refresh (one's spirit)", befitting of his ability to lighten up the mood of the group, and 彦 (hiko), a common suffix for a boy's name. His surname, Kobashikawa, consists of the kanji 小 (ko) meaning "small", 橋 (bashi) meaning "bridge", and 川 (kawa) meaning "river".

Personality[]

Haruhiko is a sociable guy who simply wants to get along with everyone. He has a cheery and laidback personality, but he can also amuse his classmates, either through his own words or actions. He admits that he's not very smart when it comes to academic knowledge, so he may have a hard time understanding anything that looks complicated to him at times. Several times in the game, he is called a pervert between his female classmates, especially after the bathroom scene in Chapter 2, having blood drip down his nose and gets nervous when asked about it.

Haruhiko is also a military enthusiast, and he is fond of collecting imitations of gun models. He even owns a military-themed aircraft in his dorm room.

History[]

Killing Game[]

Prologue[]

Haruhiko is one of the fourteen students that appear in the entrance hall of Kibōgamine Gakuen, and the first person to introduce themselves to Yuki. After Yuki concludes introducing himself to the thirteen other students the group of fifteen all began to enter the Kibōgamine Gakuen building. After their first step however everyone lost consciousness from an unknown cause, later waking up in classrooms.

After he woke up Haruhiko was quick to gather back to the Entrance Hall and wait for the other participants to gather back to the area they had fallen unconscious in. Yuki was the last person to wake up with an anonymous announcement, revealed to be held by the soon to-be-met Monokuma, redirecting the students to the gymnasium. Without another option the fifteen all gathered to the gymnasium where they first met Monokuma, and equally being shocked to hear of the start of the Killing Game.

Chapter 1[]

The first day of the killing game, Haruhiko would investigate with Ayame and Teruya. The three looked around the gym for any hidden stairs or passages, but would be unsuccessful. They also found the second floor of the school was blocked by a wire mesh, and were able to confirm there's cameras everywhere. A few days later, the first motive was handed out in the form of a video, sparking distress into Haruhiko. The contents of his video are unknown, and his distress soon fades out when he exits the A/V room and meets up with Satsuki, running and spinning in the halls. He soon crashed into two nameplates both belonging to Tsurugi and Kiyoka. Due to the rule he had unintentionally broken Haruhiko began to panic, and pleaded to not be killed over it. At first Monokuma began to scare him over this fear, but soon handed over two new nameplates for Haruhiko to place in their places, which he accidentally placed in the wrong order.

In the first class trial it's revealed that Haruhiko's accident was a key part of the case due to the order they were in. Due to this accident the killer had sent the note to meet up to the wrong person, Kiyoka, when the intended recipient was Tsurugi.

Chapter 2[]

After Mitsuhiro’s execution, Tsurugi made a group to ensure the safety of the students. Everyone, including Haruhiko, joins, with the exceptions of Kinji, Rei, and Kizuna. The students would investigate the places that had newly opened up after breakfast, Haruhiko investigating the bathhouse on the dorm floor alongside Akane and Kizuna. Days later Kizuna shows up to breakfast at the same time as them so she decides to eat in the kitchen. Halfway through breakfast, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and give them the second motive: each other's secrets. While the students aren't allowed to choose their own secret, they are allowed to choose each other's secrets. Haruhiko's secret and the secret he receives is unknown. The next day, Akane mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin. Kizuna accepts.

The day after Ayame's execution, everyone excepting Akane, Tsurugi, Yuki, Rei and Kinji would talk amongst themselves and decide to break away from Tsurugi's authority. They'd also elect to avoid Yuki due to his secret. When they tell Yuki this, Monokuma tells them that he planted an 'imposter' early in the game, even before Kiyoka died. Everyone assumes it to be Yuki, and they promptly kick him out of their group.

Man's Romance[]

This is a small scene unlocked if you have the Man's Romance (or A Man's Fantasy) present in your possession by the beginning of Chapter 2.

While Yuki is investigating the bathhouse, Haruhiko walks up to him after he overhears Akane organising a communal bath for the girls while talking with Yuki. He would then ask Yuki if he wants to spy on the girls bathing with him. If you don't have the present in your possession, Yuki disagrees, but if you do, Yuki agrees. The pair wait in the bathhouse entrance until they overhear the girls walking in, then spy on them bathing through the doors to the bathhouse.

Chapter 3[]

After Yuki is expelled from their group, the students, with the exception of Akane, would investigate the areas that had newly opened up, Haruhiko investigating the casino on the third floor with Satsuki. The pair would be playing poker when Yuki would walk in, and Satsuki would ask Yuki if he wished to join their game. The trio would play a game, Yuki's luck assisting him in winning with four kings. Haruhiko is indignant at the play, and Satsuki is quick to point out that Yuki is winning due to his luck, as he is the Ultimate Lucky Student. Haruhiko then runs out of the casino. After investigations conclude, Mikako would call everyone to the dining hall to corroborate their findings.

When in the dining hall, the students would tell the others about what they found, Kinji in particular finding a cellphone in a drawer in one of the classrooms. Since Kinji doesn't know how to use the phone to call for help, he gives it to Kakeru, who finds that there's no signal. He then gives it to Rei, who figures out that the issue is the area, and discovers that Kiyoka was the original owner of the phone through looking at the phone background. The phone leaves the students confused, as since they are believed to be in the middle of Tokyo, there should be cellphone service, as well as wondering why only Kiyoka's phone is in the school. The phone is left in the hands of Kinji for safekeeping. Mikako would then show everyone the reason for calling them all to the dining hall, taking them to the storage room and saying she'd heard someone's voice from behind it, explaining that it was the reason she was late to the trial elevator the day before. After Kakeru and Haruhiko moved the bookshelf, the students saw a giant hole in the wall with a staircase leading down. When they go to enter, Monokuma stops them, showing them a gun attached to the ceiling that would shoot if they attempted to enter. With Monokuma guarding the entrance, the students are forced to give up, but Rei and Kanata reason that there must be something important down there.

The next morning, Akane would join the group for breakfast, though she would be in her shell-shocked state and unresponsive. Due to Satsuki's words of trusting Yuki, he would be reinstated into their group.

The next day, Monokuma would call the students to the gym and present the third motive to them, a video that would show the students their desires or something they want to obtain. Unlike the first motive videos, these videos would be viewed in a soundproofed dark room, so no one other than the student viewing each video could see. The students are also told they can't say tell anyone else the contents of their video or show their reactions. The contents of Haruhiko's video are unknown, and the order the students went in is also largely unknown. Everyone was extremely uncomfortable by the time the motives ended. Shortly after Monokuma left, Akane would snap out of her shell-shocked state, screaming and running out of the gym. The others would question why she did so, with Kinji proposing it may have been due to the motive video. The students, excepting Rei, Mikako and Kinji would go to find Akane, eventually finding her in her dorm room. Monokuma would then sound the nighttime announcement, prompting everyone to stop and go to bed.

The next day at breakfast, Teruya would become angry at their lack of progress, especially since they had found a secret staircase but were unable to go down it. He would also mention that Rei, Kinji and Tsurugi were all looking for ways to escape, yet they were doing nothing. Haruhiko also begins to raise his voice at Teruya, saying that he wasn't the only one scared of what would happen. When Teruya taunts Haruhiko to murder him and get executed, Haruhiko runs up to him, and tensions continue to rise as Teruya voices his helplessness at the situation. Kakeru runs up in between them and gets them to stop fighting and reconcile. Later that day, Haruhiko, Satsuki and Teruya would find a bloodied Akane in the hall of the dorms, attempting to kill herself. After saying that she had done it to join Ayame due to the contents of her motive video. Haruhiko would witness as Mikako calms Akane down, but she attempts to say that Akane is "so much more", which prompts her to collapse from a headache.

The next day, Yuki, Satsuki, Haruhiko, Teruya and Akane would congregate in the dining hall for breakfast, Akane being back to her bright, normal self. The group soon became confused at Kakeru's and Kanata's absences, and when Mikako comes in late, they worriedly begin looking for the pair. Haruhiko, along with Akane and Mikako, find Kinji unconscious on the second floor with a bloody head. Satsuki, Teruya and Yuki would come, and Kinji would wake up shortly after. He is confused at the scene, saying he remembered going to the library at night, then a pain in his head, but can't remember anything else. They all then hear a banging noise coming from the third floor, electing to split into two groups to investigate the two floors. Haruhiko, along with Akane, Satsuki and Teruya, opt to search the second floor.

Where he investigated was unknown, but at a certain point he was alerted to the library by Akane seeing Kakeru's corpse and Tsurugi unconscious on the ground. The body discovery announcements for Kakeru and Kanata would sound, and the people from the third floor would come down. Everyone excepting Rei, Yuki and Akane would then take Kinji and Tsurugi to the infirmary to take care of their wounds. Shortly after, everyone excepting Tsurugi would return and Monokuma would appear. Monokuma gives them the Monokuma File 3-1 for Kakeru and 3-2 for Kanata. Everyone is concerned about the prospect of a serial killer, so Monokuma implements the rules that no student can kill more than two people and that no one can kill after an investigation has started.

During the investigation, Haruhiko would tell Yuki that a blood spot far away from Kakeru's body was where Tsurugi's body was after being knocked unconscious.

After Kinji's execution, Monokuma would randomly stop working. Mikako would notice first and urge everyone to run to the warehouse. The students would go down the stairs leading from the hole in the wall to find an empty room with a gate and unlocked door. Monokuma would soon show up and say that he had disposed of what had been down there, leaving everyone crestfallen at their hope of escaping being crushed.

Gambler's Ornament[]

This is a small scene unlocked if you have the Gamble of Ornament (or Gambler's Ornament) present in your possession by the third in-game day of Chapter 3.

Upon leaving the dining hall on the third in-game day of Chapter 3, Haruhiko would also leave, asking Yuki if he would like to try the slot machines in the casino, the reason being that Yuki would always get jackpots due to his luck. If you don't have the present in your possession, Yuki disagrees, and a normal free time event occurs, but if you do, he agrees, and he goes along with Haruhiko.

When Yuki and Haruhiko enter the casino, they find Teruya, Kinji and Satsuki already there. Haruhiko only knew of Satsuki and Teruya being there, so he asks Kinji why he was in the casino. Kinji responds that the casino was noisy and went to investigate, finding Teruya and Satsuki at a slot machine, and called it an "interesting nightlife entertainment". Kinji also explains that although gambling isn't something priests can really do, as long as it's confessed, there isn't a problem. After the conversation about religion ends, Yuki is forced onto the slot machine, the others witnessing and marvelling as he gets one jackpot after another. When Yuki leaves the casino, he is quite annoyed.

Chapter 4[]

After Kinji's execution, Haruhiko would not attend the morning meet-up with Akane, Yuki and Satsuki, opting to rest in his room. After the investigations of the fourth floor conclude, he and Teruya would join in on the investigation reports. He grows despairful, agreeing with Yuki's sentiment about having a lack of hope.

The next morning, he would explain to Mikako what had happened the day before, and she would try and tell the boys not to give in to despair. Shortly after, Monokuma would call all the students to the ballroom. When they gather there, Monokuma tells them he prepared a dance party to help lift their spirits up. The students are skeptical, so Monokuma prepares a memorandum that he signs to prove his intentions. The students go into change rooms divided by sex to change into ballroom outfits, Haruhiko being the fourth one ready and out. Monokuma then tells them to form pairs in order to begin dancing, Satsuki asking Haruhiko to form a pair after Akane and Yuki.

Music begins to play as the pairs dance, and after they are finished dancing, Monokuma leads them to a dining hall to eat. Everyone is lively and having fun until Teruya asks to save some food, and Akane asks to change her clothes, to which Monokuma denies. He then tells the students they aren't allowed to leave or change, and Tsurugi would bolt out of his seat, Rei walking after him. Yuki, Akane, Mikako and Teruya would follow Rei and Tsurugi, while Haruhiko and Satsuki would stay behind and continue to eat.

A little while after, the others would rush into the dining room to find he and Satsuki had eaten almost all of the food and explain the situation to them. Haruhiko and the others would then begin to investigate the ballroom. Haruhiko would investigate the ballroom entrance. After they had reconvened and presented their findings, Monokuma would call them all to the dance hall to distribute keys to the dorm rooms to each student. He would also announce the fourth motive, which is the ballroom itself, making it impossible to leave unless killing someone. Monokuma also tells them that they aren't permitted suicide, and that the reason for getting rid of their clothes was to prevent them from unlocking the door using their student handbooks. They are also told that all rules except the vandalism and violence against Monokuma rules are void while in the ballroom, there is no set 'night time' and the morning and night broadcasts will change.

Monokuma would sound the nighttime broadcast, though they don't have to sleep or stay in their rooms. In order to keep order, Yuki instructs Teruya, Akane, Mikako, Haruhiko and Satsuki to stay in their rooms as normal. The next morning, the six gather in the dining hall, Akane distributing the food in an appropriate way, with Haruhiko and Satsuki both bypassing two meals due to their overeating the day before. The six meet back up again at dinner, only to find the amount of food had decreased more than it should have. That night at dinner, they begin to lose hope about getting out when Monokuma shows up and says they can leave if they kill, but he tells them he'll reward their investigation. Monokuma had hidden a treasure within the ballroom, and would reward the person who finds it. He also mentions that the prize for finding the treasure is something the students have lost.

In the morning on the sixth day, Akane and the other five students in their group find there's no more food left. Mikako accuses Haruhiko of eating some of the food at dawn, saying that she'd been camping at the dining room entrance since the day before. Mikako also says that Satsuki had eaten the food alongside Haruhiko. Teruya becomes livid with them for eating and blaming it on Tsurugi and Rei. Haruhiko attempts to defend himself, but only exposes himself and Satsuki. That night, Teruya voices his despair at the situation, causing everyone to begin fighting, but Rei would walk in to hear the details of the food situation. Mikako tells her what Satsuki and Haruhiko had done, and when Haruhiko attempts to blame her for the food depletion, she says that neither Tsurugi nor her had eaten very much since the second day. She then shows them some food she had found in Teruya's dorm room, saying he had hidden food for himself without the others noticing. Haruhiko becomes angry and gets in Teruya's face to voice his hypocrisy. Haruhiko shoves Teruya into Yuki, and Teruya does the same to Haruhiko. Yuki and Satsuki restrain the two, and Rei comments that means of escape other than murder is impossible.

Around two days later, Yuki would find Haruhiko in the dorm hallway, Haruhiko seemingly forgetting who Yuki is and asking to take a bite of him to see if he's real. Later that day, Yuki calls everyone besides Tsurugi and Rei to the dining hall to come up with a policy on how to act in the future. Teruya comes up with the idea that two people sacrifice themselves, and opts to pick who by drawing lots. Tsurugi then walks into the dining hall and gives everyone a gun to commit mass suicide. Haruhiko and Yuki attempt to stop him, but Tsurugi throws them into the side of the fridge. Yuki attempts to calm Tsurugi down, and Tsurugi goes to tackle him but trips on a bit of the carpet. The others tie him up, gag him and leave him in his room, Mikako holding his room key in the event he needs to be let out.

That night, Haruhiko met up with Satsuki, asking her to walk with him. They eventually reach the arsenal, where Haruhiko asks her to kill him. He says that he felt guilty for eating all the food the first day at the ballroom, and wanted to save the others. He also makes his plan optional because it meant she would die from execution. Satsuki agrees, but she requests him to kill her instead. This causes them to argue, as neither wanted to kill each other. Stuck at an impasse, he proposes to have a duel where they both shoot at the same time from a distance.

Satsuki agrees, and picks a gun, but Haruhiko puts non-standard bullets in his pistol, making it so that it exploded from the inside. The two prepare to duel and shoot at the same time, her bullet shooting him in the right lung at the same time his hand is destroyed. He then confesses that he didn't really do this to save everyone, but rather for Satsuki to escape alone.

He explains that he had found the treasure Monokuma left a few days before, his prize being a picture of him and Satsuki kissing. At that point Haruhiko had felt emotions unknown to him, and decided he didn't want to let Satsuki die. He urges her to go to her room and act like she didn't know anything. After she leaves, he creates a locked room mystery by putting a wood plank in the door handles with smoke and flash grenades on top. He also trashed the room to look like the culprit did it, getting his blood everywhere. He dies while sitting up against a gun display.

Chapter 5[]

It is revealed Haruhiko's dead body is stored on the first floor of the laboratory/fifth floor of the presumed Kibōgamine Gakuen.

Chapter 0[]

Haruhiko would talk with Satsuki and Kiyoka, calling Satsuki an idiot for beating him at a couple's game. He would then see Yuki and ask him if he would like to play with everyone, and Yuki wouldn't respond. Satsuki would tell Haruhiko her brother had given her movie tickets for her and Haruhiko, and he would become concerned about thanking him. It is mentioned by numerous students that Haruhiko was planning an activity for the whole class to take part in after school.

Chapter 6[]

In a flashback of Utsuro's memories during the trial, Haruhiko along with Utsuro and Satsuki would overhear Mikako and Yamato fighting because he was visibly troubled by something he wouldn't tell anyone about. Haruhiko would tell him to talk with her. When Haruhiko rides on the back of Yamato's utility truck to get away from the chaos of the tragedy, he'd attempt to tell jokes to lighten the mood, but the unintentional dark contexts of the joke made things worse. When the boys gather in a communal bedroom their first night at Kisaragi Foundation, Haruhiko would keep the mood lighthearted.
