Hibiki Otonokoji (오토노코지 히비키) is a character featured in the Korean fangame Super Danganronpa Another 2 created by LINUJ.

She is one of the two members in the band Melody Rhythm and is known as the Super High School Level Vocalist (초고교급 보컬리스트), alongside her younger twin sister Kanade Otonokoji the Super High School Level Guitarist.

Appearance[]

Hibiki is a young high school girl with a short stature and fair skin. She has pale pink eyes and lavender hair, which gradually fades to a rosy red color. Her hair is split into two pigtails, with its tips notably curlier than her sister's. Two pink eighth-note hairclips are clipped to each side of her pigtails. Hibiki curls her hair for aesthetic purposes; it'd look the same as Kanade's hair if uncurled[3].

She wears a pale blue sailor dress with a light magenta collar and white trim, a large light amber bow, four buttons pinned evenly on it, and a pale magenta lining near its hem. On top of this is a long-sleeved dark purple cardigan with scrunched-up sleeves and side pockets. She also wears pale blue thigh-high socks with a pink stripe near the top and coral-red loafers. Her former high school symbol is printed on the flap of her uniform and both vamps of her shoes. While Hibiki and Kanade look fairly similar, there are visible differences in their appearance and clothing. This includes Hibiki's smaller bust, sharper eyes, curlier hair, the presence of pockets in her jacket, and her hair clips resembling individual eighth notes instead of combined ones.

In Chapter 6, it is revealed that Hibiki in the real world is an adult with a different appearance than her in-game self. Her hair has been clipped to a short bob, and she wears a black headband with an eighth note clip pinned to it. She wears a light pink shirt reading 'FREE', tied into a knot at the bottom right. Covered by a blue denim jacket with fur trim. There are breast pockets on both sides and four black buttons to the right. She also wears a pair of black high-waisted shorts, pink calf socks, and black loafers with a silver buckle.

Similar to her appearance in the simulation, Hibiki still looks very similar to Kanade. However, they still have a few differences in their appearances, including differently colored socks and shirts.

Creation and Development[]

Since development, the Otonokoji twins were always planned to do everything together; their free time events, execution, and involvement in Setsuka Chiebukuro's murder. Contrary to Kanade, Hibiki was planned to be the 'lesser' twin out of the two, if going by use in the killing game[4].

Kanade and Hibiki were noted to be "quite different" to what they are in the full game. When initially designed Kanade had previously been named Hibiki Otonokoji (오토노코지 히비키), and Hibiki was named Uta Otonokoji (오토노코지 우타), which wouldn't be changed until their prototype designs, and their characters as well as dynamic wouldn't be setup until a while later. Their initial designs were also quite different compared to their finalised ones, as LINUJ had yet to watch Suite Precure thus not having the behind their characters set yet. Hibiki wore a long-sleeved overcoat, an untucked white shirt, a bow-tie, a plaid skirt, past-knee lock frilly socks, and a pair of shoes. They also didn't have the noteclips they have nowadays, and instead had bows holding their pigtails in place. At the time LINUJ's only inspiration for the twins was stated to be an "SHSL Idol" and "SHSL Guitarist"[4].

A bit of time after they were initially designed, LINUJ returned to the twins and gave them a redesign. Their attire was updated in the process - though their names would still remain Uta and Hibiki - with a heavier resemblance to their designs nowadays. They were both given hairpins between changes, but then had their note symbols layered on the front of all six total pins including Hibiki's. Their dresses also were more frilly, and Kanade previously didn't wear a cardigan while Hibiki did as a previous way to tell the two apart[4].

There were no changes between Hibiki's prototype and finalized designs, except for her and Kanade's hair being fully purple rather than two-toned and her name being changed from Uta to Hibiki. This change came after LINUJ watched Suite PreCure♪, drawing inspiration from Hojo Hibiki for Hibiki's name change. Contrary to Kanade Hibiki's character was mostly decided by the prologue, possibly excluding her doll-state that may have been added later on[4].

Stats[]

Contrary to her twin sister, Hibiki's stats are much lower in terms of score overall. Intelligence is ranked 'C', as she tended to cut corners to improve her skills (though, notably, this has resulted in high results in her exams), while Reasoning Power is ranked 'D', likely due to her personality and free time events which show her refusing to state a proper reason for tormenting Kanade in their childhood. Physical ability is also ranked 'D' due to her height, though it's noted that she maintains a diet and tries to exercise when possible.

Behavior and Human Nature also rank 'C', mainly due to her overall attitude in the killing game as well as her bossy and commanding nature around Kanade. However, if Hibiki was allowed to grow as a person after chapter two, she would've been able to reach 'B' in Behaviour and 'A' in Human nature[4].

Name Etymology[]

Like her sister Kanade, Hibiki's first name is likely a reference to a character from Suite Precure, in her case one of the protagonists Hojo Hibiki.

Hibiki's first name kanji, 響, means "echo" or "resonance". Her last name, Otonokōji, uses the kanji 音 (oto) meaning "sound", ノ (no), a homophone for の meaning "of", 小 (ko) meaning "small", and 路 (ji) meaning "road". The last two kanji characters in her surname can also be read together as kōji (小路), which simply means "path". Combined with the rest of the kanji, her last name could mean "path of sound".

Personality[]

Hibiki can be described as a demanding person, especially when around her twin sister. although she can appear quite mean towards Kanade, it's described by Hibiki as joking. Despite this, however, it's a simple cover-up, with Hibiki meaning what she says at times. Along with this, she's always around Kanade, appearing to be the dominant out of the two, being "high and mighty", as described by Sora. It's believed she's easily frightened, however. Hibiki has a habit of giving the others on Utsuroshima nicknames, which is used to show trust between her and that person.

Due to the stress and worries Hibiki was having during the early days of being on the island, she appears to be more prone to lash out at people, as well as having outbursts mid-conversation.

After the Chapter 1 trial and the revelation of Void, it's shown that Hibiki lacks remorse for Hajime Makunouchi, blaming him for starting the Killing Game. She's shown to quickly blame others as well, hinting at her remorse over the current time spent on Utsuroshima. With Void being revealed the day prior, it's apparent that Hibiki has developed distrust for everyone around her, aside from Kanade, accusing all the others of being members of Void.

Later on in the chapter, it's shown that Hibiki's distrust only goes to a certain extent due to the nicknames she gives to the other participants. While initially rejecting the idea of performing due to her paranoia, she later went through with the idea, showing a more passionate side to herself when an activity had to do with singing.

Appearing to blame herself for the deaths before the third, Hibiki attempts to act more confident and motivational, Yoruko Kabuya initially thinking she had an alternate personality due to Hibiki's usual emotional reactions in earlier days. It's later described in Sora's thoughts that Hibiki changed the most throughout the time at Utsuroshima, the latter developing a more mature personality.

Despite having a job and having many business relationships, her childish personality partially has to do with Kanade killing off anyone that has the potential to make her a mature person. If Kanade died during the killing game, Hibiki would become sad for a while. However, she would eventually recover with the help of the other participants[3]. Hibiki is interested in fashion[5].

History[]

Early Life[]

When they were children, Hibiki realized Kanade was better than her in every way. She would, even at an early age, childishly harass and bully Kanade to forcefully get her way. Being too young, Kanade would not object or fight back against the mistreatment, instead giving into it. While being abused constantly, she still loved Hibiki and considered her family.

One day, when the twins' mother told Hibiki she should play with her sister for a change, Hibiki replied that she would much rather play with their pet dog, Shiro, than Kanade and that she loved Shiro more than her. Upon hearing those words, Kanade would become uncontrollably jealous, leading her to come to one conclusion: that she would be unable to become closer to Hibiki as long as Shiro was alive and in her way.

After Kanade dismembered Shiro and washed him down the drain, Hibiki tried to find him but failed. Afterwards, Hibiki came crying to her, unable to find Shiro. The younger twin caught on quickly, instantly aware of the weaknesses of Hibiki in a low mental state. She also noticed that Hibiki would suffer from short-term memory loss, forgetting whatever traumatic event had taken effect. Kanade yearned to be accepted and loved by her sister and was more than happy to do whatever she needed to have Hibiki depend on her. She schemed and planned a multitude of hellish events, setting traps to weaken her, while Hibiki continued to abuse Kanade, none the wiser. Kanade adored this as well, using it to slowly but surely modify the energetic and cheery twin into a lifeless doll.

Kanade found the most successful method of mentally weakening her sister was to eradicate Hibiki's most precious individual. In elementary school, Hibiki befriended Ayumi, who told her Kanade was creepy and they should stay away from her. Kanade then pushed Ayumi down the staircase, causing Ayumi's entire body to be paralyzed for the rest of her life. In middle school, Hibiki had a crush on her and Kanade's homeroom teacher, who was given an extra dose of muscle relaxant and buried behind the school. Unbeknownst to her, Kanade was responsible for these tragedies.

Though it's unknown exactly when, at one point, Hibiki, along with her sister, created a band called Melody Rhythm, which consisted of only her and Kanade. Kanade killed the recording engineer, makeup coordinator, and manager of the band. With this, Hibiki became so weak-minded and fragile that she would break at even the smallest tragedies. As time passed, the guitarist killed around sixty people in total. It came to the point where she would murder anyone even acquainted with Hibiki.

After her sister murdered their coordinator, Hibiki came crying to Kanade as usual, when suddenly her eyes went out of focus. When Kanade spoke to her, she did everything she was told, giving no reaction or complaint. Kanade saw this as one of the happiest moments of her life. From there, enough damage would force Hibiki into such a state of mind, making her the equivalent of a puppet. This disassociative state lasted longer and longer each time she fell into it, until the point where Kanade could switch it on and off at her will.

Utsuroshima Killing School Trip[]

Hibiki was one of the 15 students to introduce herself to both Sora and Yuki Maeda. Hibiki and Kanade would've appeared together in their introduction, with Hibiki revealing that they have had songs reach the top 3 of the musical charts.

After a while, all of the students, except for Shobai Hashimoto went beside the Monocruise. At this time, after a suggestion of going for a swim was given by Setsuka, all of the students, save for Sora, Yuki, Kokoro Mitsume, Emma Magorobi, Mikado Sannōji, and Yoruko, would agree to her idea, borrowing swimsuits from the supermarket to swim. Hibiki would stick to Kanade this time. After Yuki said he would give up and began to enter the water, everyone, including Hibiki, would fall unconscious. After a while, the participants would awaken, discovering that their swimsuits had been removed and that they were now in their talent uniforms. Soon after, an anonymous announcement would play, telling everyone to head to the center park.

In response, a panicked Hibiki, along with the other 14 participants, would head to the center park. On arrival, Monocrow would appear. It was announced that he was the one who kidnapped everyone there, and the only way to leave was to kill someone, thus announcing the Killing School Trip.

A few days into the Killing Game, Setsuka would get the idea of throwing a party to lighten everyone's moods. While sticking with Kanade in this time period, Hibiki would be met with a drunken Kanade who would begin to argue with Hibiki for what had happened in the past. Afterwards, Hibiki would head back to the Monocruise.

SDRA2 - Chapter 2 CG - Setsuka Chiebukuro encouraging Hibiki Otonokoji

Soon after Teruya Ōtori would be brought into the Killing Game, Setsuka would contact the current participants to meet her at the shrine area. Despite having to be forcefully brought there by Kanade, Hibiki would still show a strong distrust towards everyone else, accusing them of being members of Void. This would soon be disputed by Setsuka, who would be able to find out that Hibiki still trusted everyone but had been hiding it out of fear. To encourage Hibiki, Setsuka would attempt to comfort her and, despite her still having a sense of distrust at first, would be able to successfully do so. Due to this, she and Kanade would perform a song of theirs for the other participants.

None of them knew, however, that Emma would use this as an opportunity to murder Kokoro after the latter accidentally and unintentionally provoked the former to insanity, which resulted in Kokoro's murder, where Emma used the music as a distraction to hide Kokoro's voice that asked Teruya for help.

During the 2nd Class Trial, Hibiki doesn't do anything worth mentioning, with Sora, Shobai, and Kanade Otonokoji solving the case of Kokoro's murder.

The next day, Hibiki questions why Sora, Yuki, Teruya, and Shinji Kasai were late to breakfast, to which they answer they were closing up the 4th floor balcony at the request of Shinji due to the previous two murders. She invites Setsuka to investigate the third island, which she agrees to do.

Fate[]

Hibiki and Kanade are seen kneeling on a pink and white checkered platform, lights shining down on them, with a chain connecting the two together from their necks. A podium with a key is placed opposite the twins. A screen above them flashes the word "Go!". Hibiki runs towards the key but is tripped by Kanade, who grabs onto her foot with a twisted expression. Hibiki grabs her microphone and beats Kanade over the head with it multiple times, causing her to let go. As Hibiki runs away, the chain around the twins necks starts to pull Kanade upward, choking her. Hibiki makes it to the podium and grabs the key. As soon as she inserts the key into the chain on her neck, she is decapitated by it, much to Kanade’s surprise and joy. The ground beneath the two recedes, leaving Kanade to slowly die from being hanged.

Super Danganronpa Another 2 - Hibiki Otonokoji Introduction (Korean)

Hibiki is the famous vocalist from the duo band 'Melody Rhythm', which consisted of herself and her twin sister, Kanade. Together, their songs have done incredibly well on the charts, reaching up to the top three over the short amount of time the band has been together. Her passion for singing started at a young age, and she would practice to her best when it was possible, but Kanade was always more talented in singing compared to herself. Kanade soon began to downplay her own skills to earn Hibiki's love, however, and Hibiki's talent was allowed to shine and develop more. Over time, she managed to hit up to the 7th octave, a feat that helped her scouting process for Hope's Peak Academy.

In a special performance to help raise everyone's spirits, Sora's thoughts share insight into Hibiki's skills as a singer. She's first described as having a beautiful singing voice, which would contrast her usual cutesy-playful voice. Both twins were able to continue performing through multiple songs without rest due to their passion, and by the last song, every participant had managed to lose attention to their surroundings.

In Chapter 6, it is revealed that Hibiki and Kanade were not actually students of Hope's Peak Academy, but were still popular performers in the music industry.

Trivia[]

  • In the popularity poll Hibiki ranked 13th, with 60 votes and 1.4% of the overall votes[6].
  • According to Kanade, Hibiki's music preferences include pop and sweet love songs.
  • During Hibiki and Kanade's Chapter 2 performance they play the opening song to Suite Precure, this is a nod to their character inspirations.
  • It is possible that, similarly to their given names, the name of Hibiki and Kanade's band, Melody Rythm, was inspired by Suite Precure, as the twin's namesakes, Hojo Hibiki and Minamino Kanade's alter egos, are named "Cure Melody" and "Cure Rhythm," respectively.
  • LINUJ prefers Hibiki over Kanade, but considers Kanade, as the primary Blackened of Chapter 3, to be the game's "hidden MVP." [4].
  • Hibiki is the worst cook out of the students, as Kanade would do everything for her in the past[3].
  • Hibiki has good grades[3].
  • Hibiki and Kanade have completely different food tastes, although it is not mentioned what food Hibiki or Kanade likes[3].
  • Hibiki does not like anime, although occasionally watches it[3].
  • LINUJ states that Hibiki believes she and Kanade has a synchronous connection. Kanade disagrees with this[3].
  • If Hibiki and Kanade were not twins, and were friends instead, they would have still had the same outcome as they did as Twins[5].
  • Hibiki's TTS sprites' outfit is a reference to the popular Vocaloid singer Hatsune Miku.
