Kakeru is a teenager of above average height who has a muscular build. He has short, pulled back black hair, grey eyes and tanned skin. During trials, his right eye turns red; it is called his 'flashing eye'.

In his talent illustration, he wears a grey suit with two yellow buttons, a red tie and a button up white shirt. He also wears light grey trousers, light grey shoes and rectangle glasses.
Name Etymology[]
Kakeru's first name uses the kanji 駆, meaning "to run" or "to inspire", which can also be written as a verb 駆ける (kakeru), meaning "to advance against one's enemy". This may represent sides in a lawsuit, with Kakeru's side winning against the other. His surname, Yamaguchi, uses the kanji 山 (yama) meaning "mountain", and 口 (guchi) meaning "mouth" or figuratively, "speech".
Personality[]
Kakeru is a legal prodigy who started at a very young age. With his experience as a lawyer, he is a proficient speaker in court. However, contrary to this confident side of him, he is actually a timid and shy person, struggling to initiate a conversation with other people in his daily life because of his intimidating appearance.
History[]
Killing Game[]
Prologue[]
Kakeru is one of the fourteen students to introduce himself to Yuki Maeda, with Yuki remembering that Kakeru was proficient in the study of legal knowledge, and furthermore had worked as a lawyer. Once heading into the main school building he would fall unconscious along with the rest of the students.
Once awoken, Kakeru would head to the entrance hall with the other participants. After Yuki enters the hall, an anonymous announcement would play directing everyone to the gym. Once there, Monokuma would announce the start of the Killing Game.
Chapter 1[]
The first day of the killing game, Kakeru would investigate the school with Mitsuhiro Higa, Tsurugi Kinjo, and Kizuna Tomori. They would investigate the student dorm rooms, and discovered the door to the second floor of the dorms was blocked by a wire mesh. Kakeru, along with Tsurugi, also discovered the dorm rooms were soundproof. A few days later, the first motive would be handed out in the form of a video. Although the contents of his video and his initial reaction to the video are unknown, he is worried when Rei Mekaru calls the rest of them "would-be murderers". After the first body discovery, Kakeru would be able to clear Rei from suspicion due to his own account. He claimed that he spotted Rei at 6 in the morning, which Yuki said was the time of death, thus creating a contradiction. However, this also led Kakeru to blame himself for Kiyoka Maki's death, as he was near where her body was first discovered at the time.
Chapter 2[]
After Mitsuhiro's execution, Tsurugi made a group to ensure the safety of the students. Everyone, including Kakeru, joins the group with the exceptions of Kizuna, Rei and Kinji Uehara. The students would investigate the places that had newly opened up after breakfast, Kakeru investigating classroom 2-1 on the second floor. A few days later, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and them the second motive: each other's secrets. While they are allowed to see each other's secrets, they aren't allowed to see their own. Kakeru's secret is received by Tsurugi, and is that he was bullied a lot in elementary school. The secret he receives is unknown. The next day, Akane Taira mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin. Kizuna accepts.
The day after Ayame Hatano's execution, everyone except Akane, Tsurugi, Yuki, Rei and Kinji would talk amongst themselves and decide to break away from Tsurugi's authority. They'd also elect to avoid Yuki due to his secret. When they tell Yuki this, Monokuma tells them that he planted an 'imposter' early in the game, even before Kiyoka died. Everyone assumes it to be Yuki, and they promptly kick him out of their group.
Chapter 3[]
After Yuki is expelled from their group, the students, with the exception of Akane, would investigate the areas that had newly opened up, Kakeru investigating the infirmary on the first floor with Kanata Inori. After investigations conclude, Mikako Kurokawa would call everyone to the dining hall to corroborate their findings.
When in the dining hall, the students would tell the others about what they found, Kinji in particular finding a cellphone in a drawer in one of the classrooms. Since Kinji doesn't know how to use the phone to call for help, he gives it to Kakeru, who finds that there's no signal. He then gives it to Rei, who figures out that the issue is the area, and discovers that Kiyoka was the original owner of the phone through looking at the phone background. The phone leaves the students confused, as since they are believed to be in the middle of Tokyo, there should be cellphone service, as well as wondering why only Kiyoka's phone is in the school. The phone is left in the hands of Kinji for safekeeping. Mikako would then show everyone the reason for calling them all to the dining hall, taking them to the storage room and saying she'd heard someone's voice from behind it, explaining that it was the reason she was late to the trial elevator the day before. After Kakeru and Haruhiko Kobashikawa moved the bookshelf, the students saw a giant hole in the wall with a staircase leading down. When they go to enter, Monokuma stops them, showing them a gun attached to the ceiling that would shoot if they attempted to enter. With Monokuma guarding the entrance, the students are forced to give up, but Rei and Kanata reason that there must be something important down there.
The next morning, Akane would join the group for breakfast, though she would be in her shell-shocked state and unresponsive. Due to Satsuki Iranami's words of trusting Yuki, he would be reinstated into their group.
The next day, Monokuma would call the students to the gym and present the third motive to them, a video that would show the students their desires or something they want to obtain. Unlike the first motive videos, these videos would be viewed in a soundproofed dark room, so no one other than the student viewing each video could see. The students are also told that they can't tell anyone else the contents of their video or show their reactions. The contents of Kakeru's video are unknown, and the order the students went in is also largely unknown. Everyone was extremely uncomfortable by the time the motives ended. Shortly after Monokuma left, Akane would snap out of her shell-shocked state, screaming and running out of the gym. The others would question why she did so, with Kinji proposing it may have been due to the motive video. The students, except Rei, Mikako and Kinji would go to find Akane, eventually finding her in her dorm room. Monokuma would then sound the nighttime announcement, prompting everyone to stop and go to bed.
The next day at breakfast, Teruya Ōtori would become angry at their lack of progress, especially since they had found a secret staircase but were unable to go down it. He would also mention that Rei, Kinji and Tsurugi were all looking for ways to escape, yet they were doing nothing. Haruhiko also begins to raise his voice at Teruya, saying that he wasn't the only one scared of what would happen. When Teruya taunts Haruhiko to murder him and get executed, Haruhiko runs up to him, and tensions continue to rise as Teruya voices his helplessness at the situation. Kakeru runs up in between them and gets them to stop fighting and reconcile.
That night, Kakeru would walk in on Kinji attempting to kill Kanata in the art room. Kakeru would push Kinji into a statue and pick her up, running away in an attempt to escape. Kinji would slash his neck as he does so, and Kakeru would weakly request Kinji to leave Kanata alive. Kakeru's body would then be stuffed into a locker until Kinji ambushes Rei, replacing his body with hers. Kakeru would be taken to the library to be used as bait for Tsurugi, and would stay there until Monokuma disposes of his body.
Chapter 5[]
It is revealed that Kakeru's dead body is stored on the first floor of the laboratory/fifth floor of the presumed Kibōgamine Gakuen.
Chapter 0[]
Kakeru would have a wound from a conflict with some Reserve Course students treated by Kanata when Yuki would approach him. He would be surprised Yuki would talk with him, and would explain how he got the wound when Yuki asked.
Chapter 6[]
In a flashback of Utsuro's memories during the trial, Kakeru is seen hiding with Kinji and Kanata the day the Monokumas invaded the lab. They hid in a small warehouse, and he would resolve to wait out the chaos before attempting to find their classmates. When a Monokuma crashes the door down, Kakeru would hold it to the wall in an attempt to let the others escape, but the door would close and he'd be thrown into the opposite wall, knocking him unconscious.
Chapter EX[]
Initial design and others[]
Kakeru´s initial design doesn't look much different from his official design. One of the most major differences is his pupils. His pupils are much smaller now, so he looks scarier. Kakeru was heavily inspired by the character from ¨Blade of Soul¨ design wise. Despite the scary appearance, he was changed to be a shy, kind person, instead of a rude, chaotic one.
