Appearance

Kanade is a young high school girl with short stature. She has fair skin, pale pink eyes, and lavender hair which gradually fades to a rosy red color. Her hair is split into pigtails with two pink eighth note hairclips clipped to each side.

She wears a pale blue sailor dress with light magenta collar and white trim, large light amber bow and four buttons pinned evenly on it, and a pale magenta lining near its hem. Over her uniform, she wears a long-sleeved dark purple cardigan. She also wears light pale blue thigh-high socks with a pink stripe near the top and coral red loafers. Her former high school symbol is printed on the flap of her uniform and both toe vamps of her shoes.

While Kanade and Hibiki look fairly similar, there are visible differences in their appearance and clothing. This includes Kanade's larger bust, rounder eyes, more condensed hair, the lack of pockets in her jacket, and her hairclips resembling combined eighth notes instead of separate ones.

Outside of the simulation Kanade is revealed to be an adult, likely in her twenties. She bares similarities to her VR appearance however having longer hair, a single black headband, and a single double music note hairclip.

She wears a crop denim jacket with a fur inside around the collar and upper-area, a light blue shirt that's tied at a knot near the bottom with the text covered but showing the letters "O.V", a pair of black shorts that button together with a single silver button, a pair of white socks, and a pair of reddish-pink shoes with small silver buckles on either one.

Personality

At first glance, Kanade appears to be very weak-willed and has trouble expressing her opinions thanks to her sister's abuse. Whenever she says something logical, Hibiki would often thought that she making fun of her for realizing her sister's mistake. Hibiki also calls Kanade 'morbidly obese' and often play games like tickling her younger sister. Kanade, as such, seems to be dependent on Hibiki, and don't usually try to defy her, even saying to Sora that she doesn't need to be worried that she is being bullied. In contrast to Hibiki's personality, Kanade wants to protect her twin sister, rather than bash and control her. During Hibiki's outbursts, Kanade would take the time to help her throughout, taking her away from the crowds, and letting her calm down during these times, being her moral support in blunter terms.

Unlike her twin sister, Kanade appears to be smarter and more useful during cases due to her ability to spot pieces of evidence and theorize how the killer used it to help them. An example of this would be during Chapter 2, where she would spot the icicles and the carvings on them. However, during the trial, Kanade starts to show her hidden personality. She appears to become much more intimidating to others, including Hibiki, by grinning menacingly or creepily stare at the students when they started questioning her theory, blatantly saying that it is perfect. In Chapter 3, her true personality revealed itself.

Kanade is a cunning, manipulative and to an extent, psychopathic serial killer. Born being better than not just Hibiki, but almost everyone in her life at almost everything, Kanade believed that she was perfect and didn't see value in anyone, calling her parents 'things' and quickly dismissed their death which was caused by her older self, except one. Kanade has an extreme and incestuous love for her sister, believing her to be the only family member she has. Like Kanade, Hibiki realizes that she is inferior and bullies Kanade to make her remember that she is still the older sis and forces Kanade to rely on her. Because of this, Kanade faked herself to be a supportive and caring younger sister, which fooled everyone, including Kokoro Mitsume, and secretly plans lots of mental shocks for Hibiki, which includes butchering her pet dog Shiro, causing her best friend Ayumi's entire body to be paralyzed for the rest of her life, giving the middle-school teacher she had a crush on an extra dose of muscle relaxant, killing the recording engineer, makeup coordinator, and manager for the band and much more, tally up to around 60 lives not counting her parents, all so that Hibiki can only rely on her. Hibiki, because of the murders, is mentally weak, and after the band coordinator's death, become a puppet that Kanade can control at will. Thanks to this, Kanade sets up an incredibly complicated murder scheme, where the victim, Setsuka, who was trying to help Hibiki over her mental health issue was killed then chop to pieces.

However, this also shows the other side of Kanade's personality. When her plan was starting to be found out, Kanade quickly became more and more furious and when back up to a corner, she shook up and turned pale, saying that her plans have never failed before and blaming it on pure rotten luck. Because of her perfect view of herself, she couldn't accept her failure and stuttered, though quickly return back to her normal self when she know she can't escape, wishing to see her sister's despairing and dying moment before she dies. Even if Hibiki hadn't bullied Kanade during their childhood, she still would've acted the same way as she does ingame[3]. If Hibiki died during the game, Kanade would've taken her life shortly afterwards[3]. Kanade doesn't have any hatred towards Void, Mikado Sannōji, or Monocrow, and didn't have any plans on taking them down, as she only wanted to get off the island with Hibiki. If double kills weren't allowed, she would've planned to defeat them however[3].

Creation and Development

Since development, the Otonokoji twins were always planned to do everything together; their free time events, execution, and involvement in Setsuka Chiebukuro's murder. Kanade is described a "hidden MVP" by LINUJ, likely due to her involvement and use in the class trials, and also as the "final boss" for the section of Chapter 1 ~ Chapter 3. Originally, Kanade wasn't going to take this role, and it wasn't planned who would, but after finding inspiration in the canon chapter three killers and his own ideas, her original character was scraped in favor for the Kanade known today[4].

SDRA2 - Design - Otonokoji twins initial designs

Kanade and Hibiki were noted to be "quite different" to what they are in the full game. When initially designed Kanade had previously been named Hibiki Otonokoji (오토노코지 히비키), and Hibiki was named Uta Otonokoji (오토노코지 우타), which wouldn't be changed until their prototype designs, and their characters as well as dynamic wouldn't be setup until a while later. Their initial designs were also quite different compared to their finalized ones, as LINUJ had yet to watch Suite Precure thus not having the behind their characters set yet. Kanade wore a long-sleeved overcoat, an untucked white shirt, a bow-tie, a plaid skirt, past-knee lock frilly socks, and a pair of shoes. They also didn't have the noteclips they have nowadays, and instead had bows holding their pigtails in place. At the time LINUJ's only inspiration for the twins was stated to be an "SHSL Idol" and "SHSL Guitarist"[4].

SDRA2 - Design - Otonokoji twins initial designs (2)

A bit of time after they were initially designed, LINUJ returned to the twins and gave them a redesign. Their attire was updated in the process - though their names would still remain Uta and Hibiki - with a heavier resemblance to their designs nowadays. They were both given hairpins between changes, but then had their note symbols layered on the front of all six total pins including Hibiki's. Their dresses also were more frilly, and Kanade previously didn't wear a cardigan while Hibiki did as a previous way to tell the two apart[4].

SDRA2 - Design - Kanade Otonokoji prototype design

The twins would soon receive prototype designs like everyone else did with theirs resembling their final designs completely, undergoing a name change as well during this process. Kanade's name was changed in a mix of what it was nowadays, with inspiration being drawn from Kanade Minamino from Suite PreCure. It was at this point that their characters had been developed to a certain point, but LINUJ states that Kanade wasn't fully completed still. Kanade had only started to fit with her current personality in Chapter 1, specifically after Spike Chunsoft had released the most recent game to the Danganronpa Trilogy; Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. LINUJ, having reached the final years of attendance in the army, was unable to play the game until he would return home, but would quickly be spoiled about some of the games content. Included in this was the canon character Korekiyo Shinguji, who LINUJ quickly learned more about and was impressed by. The initial personality Kanade had, a timid crybaby as described by LINUJ, would quickly twist as inspiration would quickly be drawn by Korekiyo and the other chapter three killers - including Kinji Uehara his own from his previous fangame Danganronpa Another - resulting in Kanade being the character shown in the finalized version of the game[4].

Stats

SDRA2 - Stats - Kanade Otonokoji

Kanade ranks highest in reasoning power, intelligence, and behaviour, with all three of these stats ranking with an 'S', and all of her stats are based off of natural ability alone. In reference to her intelligence LINUJ states that only Yamato Kisaragi would've managed to receive an S in intelligence and reasoning from SDRA2's predecessor, and that while Rei Mekaru and the other 'brains of the class trial' may of been able to beat her with effort they still wouldn't rank up to the scores Kanade received.

On the contrary Kanade's lowest stats are human nature (E) and physical ability (C). Alike intelligence, physical ability is based on her natural strength itself, and not the techniques she used in the killing game. This is because, as stated in the Otonokoji twins free time events, Kanade doesn't train that often to allow Hibiki to "flourish" in her abilities, and that most of her killings have to be by surprise or psychological combat to actually work. If Kanade did train, LINUJ states that Kanade would've been 'unstoppable'. As for human nature, her low scores come from her own social life. Kanade doesn't care for anyone other than Hibiki, which deduces a number of points on its own, but her incestuous views on Hibiki helps make her score so low[4].

Name Etymology

Like her sister Hibiki, Kanade's first name is likely a reference to a character from Suite PreCure, in her case one of the protagonists Minamino Kanade.

Kanade's first name kanji, 奏, is taken from the verb 奏でる (kanaderu), meaning "to play an instrument", especially stringed instruments, referencing her talent as the Super High School Level Guitarist.

Her last name, Otonokōji, uses the kanji 音 (oto) meaning "sound", ノ (no), a homophone for の meaning "of", 小 (ko) meaning "small", and 路 (ji) meaning "road". The last two kanji characters in her surname can also be read together as kōji (小路), which simply means "path". Combined with the rest of the kanji, her last name could mean "path of sound".

History

Early Life

Around her birth to being three or four years old, Kanade came to a realization that she was better than Hibiki in every way, whether it be talent, personality, skills, or the like. When Hibiki came to the same realization, she would, even at an early age, childishly harass and bully Kanade to forcefully get her way. Being too young, Kanade would not object or fight back to the mistreatment, instead, giving into it. While being abused constantly, she still loved Hibiki and considered her family.

One day, when the twins' mother told Hibiki she should play with her sister for a change, Hibiki replied that she would much rather play with their pet teacup poodle, Shiro, than Kanade, and that she loved Shiro more than her. Upon hearing those words, Kanade would become uncontrollably jealous, leading her to come to one conclusion: that she would be unable to become closer to Hibiki as long as Shiro was alive and in her way.

Kanade then took action. She took a kitchen knife and then butchered Shiro into pieces. She cut him up and washed him down the drain. Despite all the measures she had to go to as to make sure she wasn't discovered for her crime, it came excessively easily to Kanade. While she did feel a bit of guilt, once Hibiki came crying to her, unable to find Shiro, Kanade quickly dismissed any feelings of shame. The younger twin caught on quickly, instantly aware of the weaknesses of Hibiki in a low mental state. She also noticed that Hibiki would suffer from short memory loss, forgetting whatever traumatic event had taken effect. Kanade yearned to be accepted and loved by her sister, and was more than happy to do whatever she needed to have Hibiki depend on her. She schemed and planned a multitude of hellish events, setting traps to weaken her, while Hibiki continued to abuse Kanade unbeknownst of such a thing. Kanade adored this as well, using it to slowly but surely modify the energetic and cheery twin into only looking towards her for company.

SDRA2 - Chapter 3 CG - Kanade Otonokoji talking about her murders for her sister

Kanade found the most successful method of mentally weakening her sister was to eradicate Hibiki's most precious individual. Over the years, she severly injure or even murder anyone Hibiki had cared for. She pushed Hibiki's best friend from grade school, Ayumi, down a large staircase, causing her to be hospitalized and her entire body to be paralyzed for the rest of her life as payback for calling her creepy and telling Hibiki they should stay away from her. She gave their middle-school teacher who Hibiki had a crush on an extra dose of muscle relaxant and buried him in a hill behind the school, justifying that he was a paedophile who had indecent thoughts about Hibiki thus it was an act to save her from him. Though it's unknown exactly when, at one point, Kanade, along with her sister, created a band called Melody Rhythm, which consisted of only her and Hibiki. Kanade killed the recording engineer, makeup coordinator, and manager for the band. With this, Hibiki became so weak minded and fragile that she would break at even some of the smallest tragedies. As time passed, the guitarist killed or injured around sixty people in total. It came to the point where she would murder anyone even acquainted with Hibiki.

After massacring their coordinator into sushi who had a strong relationship with Hibiki, Hibiki came crying to Kanade as usual, when suddenly her eyes went out of focus. When Kanade spoke to her, she did everything she was told, giving no reaction or complaint. Kanade saw this as one of the happiest moments of her life. From there, enough damage would force Hibiki into such a state of mind, becoming the equivalent of a puppet. Upon realizing this, Kanade changed her training goal from Hibiki to only relying on her to becoming a lifeless doll. This mode lasted longer and longer each time she fell into it, until the point where Kanade could switch it on and off at her will with just the right amount of trauma.

At some point, she planned on murdering their parents as a finale of her plan to turn Hibiki into a puppet, but at the time, she thought it was too soon. A few years later, she executed her plan. She came to the Otonokoji home and repeatedly stabbed her parents to death. She slited her father's throat open and sliced her mother's abdomen open, causing her intestines to pour out. In a daze, she looked at a nearby mirror, covered in blood and her appearance disheveled.

Through everything, Kanade was never arrested or suspected. She claims this is a mixture of her being too perfect and the police being too idiotic. However, since several people close to them were suddenly dying, Tsurugi Kinjo started investigating and interrogating the twins, but was never able to find out she was responsible for it. Since they were interrogated by Tsurugi, they were officially "connected to the class of 79" and thus, Mikado and Syobai kidnapped the twins and put them in the Neo World Program.

Kanade and Hibiki had their memories erased and their bodies modified to when they were High School students. Their memories were also modified to make them think they had been invited by Hope's Peak Academy. With that, they were put on the first island inside the virtual world and the Killing Game began.

Utsuroshima Killing School Trip

Kanade was one of the people to introduce herself to Sora and Yuki, standing with her twin sister Hibiki as she did so, showing a somewhat shy side to herself.

After a while, all of the students par Shobai went beside the Monocruise. In this time, after a suggestion of going for a swim was given by Setsuka, all of the students, save for Sora, Yuki, Kokoro, Emma, Mikado, and Yoruko, would agree to her idea, borrowing swimsuits from the supermarket to swim, with Kanade sticking with Hibiki in this time After Yuki said he would give up, and began to enter the water, everyone including Kanade would fall unconscious. After a while, the participants would awaken, discovering that their swimsuits were removed, with them now being in their talent uniforms. Soon after, an anonymous announcement would play, telling everyone to head to the centre park.

SDRA2 - Prologue CG - Monocrow declaring the Killing Game

In response, Kanade along with the other 14 participants, would head to the centre park. At arrival, Monocrow would appear. It was announced that he was the one who kidnapped everyone there, and the only way to leave was to kill someone, thus announcing the Killing School Trip.

Days later during the trip, a party would be held by Setsuka. Due to alcohol being mixed with the normal bottles, Kanade would become drunk, letting out her bottled up emotions towards Hibiki. Later on she would be helped back to the Monocruise by Iroha. The morning afterwards, Yuri would be found dead at the bell tower. Once discovering anaesthetic was involved in the murder case, Kanade would rush to the infirmary, confirming that one of the needles had gone missing at some point. Once Sora would discovered it was used, Kanade would confirm that the substance was anaesthetic, saying that she's smelled it a lot. She also puts forward that the amount can be controlled.

In the beginning of the trial, Kanade asked Monocrow if there could be accomplices, and he explained that there can be accomplices but only the one who murdered someone can leave the island, and that if two murders happen, only the first one will count.

During the class trial, Kanade was one of the many people to accuse Yoruko of being the culprit, but eventually it was found out that the real culprit was Hajime Makunouchi. He was then executed due to the rules of the class trial. It was also revealed that he was a member of an organization known as "Void" lead by Mikado and every member was meant to kill someone at a determined time.

SDRA2 - Chapter 2 CG - Melody Rhythm concert

Soon after the first class trial, Kanade and (after being helped by Setsuka) Hibiki would perform together to the other participants. By doing so most of the participants would be distracted by Emma's and Kokoro's conversation, including Teruya who had agreed to keep watch on her. Afterwards, Kanade and Hibiki would stick together as she'd help her with multiple problems, mostly due to the stress during the killing game.

3 days later Kokoro's dead body would be discovered, leading for Kanade to investigate. Once there, she would notice that multiple icicles had been knocked down with inscriptions being carved into them. Due to this, Kanade would be able to deduce who Kokoro's killer was before the trial began. During the second trial Kanade, explained that the liquid nitrogen found in the investigation was “fake evidence” and Kokoro’s real cause of death was freezing inside the fridge. Kanade also explained the dying message: She said every icicle was meant to represent a girl, and that the penetrated icicle was meant to represent Kokoro. The penetrated icicle was also bigger than the others, meaning the culprit is the tallest girl among them. With that information, Sora was also to pin down Emma Magorobi as the culprit.

As no one believed her, she began to show her true colors, calling everyone stupid and telling Hibiki to shut up. She and Sora would attempt to prove that Emma had been the killer of Kokoro. Despite most people disagreeing with her, she would soon be able to prove that Emma was the killer, based from the dying message left behind as well as pointing out what Emma's talent could be capable of.

The Third Island

SDRA2 - Chapter 3 CG - Setsuka Chiebukuro comforting Hibiki Otonokoji

Mikado and Monocrow gathered everyone and explained the rules of the new island: it was a theme park and, in order to enter every attraction, they needed to use their handbooks.

He also gave everyone pads which would be the "motive videos". Every pad had an incomplete video of the viewer's close ones nearly dying. Kanade and Hibiki's motive videos showed their parents being killed by an unidentified person. Everyone was scared of what they saw in the video, especially Hibiki. Setsuka tried to comfort Hibiki and told her that she should come to the parade tomorrow. At that point, Kanade was already planning her murder.

Kanade's Plan

In the next day, Kanade picked sleeping drugs, medkit and blood packs to use for the murder. She put the sleeping drugs in Iroha's coffee in order to eliminate any chances of her having an alibi. Kanade lured Setsuka to the pool, knocked her out and poured blood on her. When Hibiki entered the pool and saw Setsuka lying down and bleeding, she thought she was dead and that was the breaking point for Hibiki, she entered a traumatized state where she was "awake but unconscious" and could only obey Kanade.

Kanade used that to her advantage and controlled her throughout the entire plan. She brought two knives, gave one to Hibiki and both stabbed Setsuka at the same time, killing her and making both of them be recognized as the culprit. Kanade and Hibiki also used Setsuka's handbook to confuse the gate's IN and OUT records. Hibiki then put a "Sanitation Time, Don't Enter" sign in front of the pool so that Kanade could cut Setsuka's corpse into pieces without being noticed. After a few hours, she had successfully cut Setsuka into eleven pieces. She then cleaned the pool and hid the torso somewhere since that's the place Setsuka was stabbed. At some point Kanade accidentally left a bottle of antibiotic pills behind at the crime scene. Since carrying it herself would be difficult, Kanade put Setsuka's chest inside one of the Parade's robots in order to send them to the other side.

Meanwhile Hibiki disguised as Kanade by putting Setsuka's hand in a plastic bag and putting it on her chest, since Kanade's chest was bigger than her's. She also used Setsuka's hands to turn on her handbook and sent a message to Iroha telling her to come to the Ghost House at 18:00, removed her disguise (while accidentally dropping her pins) and purposely entered the mirror mansion at the given time, in order to be witnessed by Iroha. Inside the mansion, she put off the fire causing a blackout.

Later Hibiki-as-Kanade watched the parade with the others in order to create a fake alibi for Kanade while framing herself. Meanwhile, the real Kanade used the Monorail to throw seven of Setsuka's body pieces into the Ghost House's chimney, one by one in a total of seven monorail runs.

At that point, everyone was worried for Setsuka and started searching for her. At that point, Hibiki had removed her disguise. After Sora left the Ghost House, Kanade entered the Ghost House with the hands, picked up the other seven body pieces in the chimney and put all of them into the altar. She then poured the remaining blood all over the Ghost House's interior to make it look like the place of the murder. Once that was complete, she hid in there until the others came and the body discovery announcement played. Then she pretended she had just entered like everyone.

At that point, Kanade made Hibiki conscious again and since she was controlled throughout the whole murder, she had no memory of anything that happened during the last hours. With that, Kanade's plan was perfect, she had created a fake alibi for herself, had two backup plans for framing either Iroha and Hibiki and, even if they voted for Hibiki or Kanade, it would be wrong as the real culprit was both of them, and thus both would be able to escape the Killing Game as part of the class trial rules.

During the Class Trial, Hibiki was eventually pinned down as the culprit due to Iroha's account and due to her lying about not going anywhere. Kanade explained that Hibiki loses her memories when she is scared and accused her of committing the murder and forgetting about it. However, Shobai disagreed, he brought up the idea that Hibiki was simply used as an accomplice and that the real culprit was Kanade, who knew about her memory loss and used it to her advantage.

Kanade kept doing her best to defend herself while Shobai and Sora find more evidence to accuse Kanade. Eventually Kanade used her backup plan to accuse Iroha of being the culprit, saying that she planned to frame Hibiki from the start with her "fake account". However, Mikado confirmed Iroha's alibi and Sora found evidence that the real culprit was trying to incriminate Iroha, since they put sleeping drugs in her coffee in order to eliminate any chances of her having an alibi.

The class trial continued for a long time, with Kanade continuously pulling contradictions in order to confuse the rest but Shobai and Sora were slowly able to discover almost every trick in the case and were able to fully pin down Kanade as the culprit. However, just when they were about to vote for her, Sora objected and said that they should continue to discuss the case. Sora's algorithm was programmed to prevent Yuki from getting killed at any costs, which is why it convinced Sora to not vote yet, as voting for Kanade would result in everyone except for her and Hibiki to be executed.

Shobai agreed that they should continue to discuss the case, even though Kanade kept admitting to being the culprit. Mixing the fact that the torso was missing and Hibiki had no reason to help Kanade escape since she would be executed in the process, Shobai came up with the theory that Kanade and Hibiki stabbed Setsuka at the same time and both were considered the culprit. Monocrow explained that, if two people stabbed someone at the same time, the finishing blow would decide who is the culprit, but Shobai insisted on it, and Monocrow confirmed that, if two people were to stab someone at the same time with no time difference, they could be both recognized as the culprit.

That angered Kanade, she knew he was correct and started shouting desperately in order to hopefully refute them. As a last piece of evidence, Sora brought up the antibiotic bottle found in the pool area, saying that the reason Kanade stole the first-aid kit was to heal Setsuka in case the simultaneous stab failed. After summarizing everything that happened in the case, Kanade was forced to admit that their reasoning was correct.

With that, Monocrow unlocked a new option in the voting for the participants to vote for both Hibiki and Kanade just for this trial, and everyone voted for them.

Fate

The class trial ended and Monocrow gave the verdict: they were correct, the culprit behind Setsuka’s murder was both Kanade and Hibiki. Everyone was disgusted and wondering why the twins would do something like that, and some accused them of being part of Void, but Mikado confirmed that they weren’t part of the Void, they were simply killing to escape. They also wondered if they killed because of the motive, but Kanade denied it, saying she had planned the murder from the start and that she didn’t care about the status of her parents.

When they asked why she killed Setsuka, Kanade showed her brainwashing abilities: she was able to make Hibiki “turn off” and force her to do anything Kanade says. Kanade then revealed all of her crimes, including her murdering towards people Hibiki had a relationship with, saying that her goal was to traumatize Hibiki as much as she could in order to make her enter a state of shock where the only thing she can do is listen to her sister’s request, making her the perfect puppet. She revealed that Hibiki was controlled throughout the entire murder ever since she saw Setsuka lying down and “bleeding” on the ground.

When Syobai asked why she gave up so easily, Kanade said that, not only she wanted to keep her dignity, but that she also wanted to see Hibiki’s despairful moments during their double execution. Kanade also revealed that she picked up a last will from Setsuka, saying it contained important information, but instead of giving it to them, she used a lighter and burned it as revenge.

Before they were executed, Monocrow said he was going to show the truth behind their motive video since they still committed the murder despite losing the trial, and Kanade made Hibiki conscious again so that she can watch the video. It was an extended version of the motive video, but this time revealing the identity of the murderer: Kanade Otonokoji, she was also the one who killed her own parents. Since her memories were erased, Kanade was confused about the video, but after Monocrow confirmed it was legit, Kanade understood what happened and laughed, while refusing to reveal what she discovered.

Hibiki and Kanade are seen kneeling on a pink and white checkered platform, lights shining down on them, with a chain connecting the two together from their necks. A podium with a key is placed opposite the twins. A screen above them flashes the word "Go!". Hibiki runs towards the key but is tripped by Kanade, who grabs onto her foot with a twisted expression. Hibiki grabs her microphone and beats Kanade over the head with it multiple times, causing her to let go. As Hibiki runs away, the chain around the twins necks starts to pull Kanade upward, choking her. Hibiki makes it to the podium and grabs the key. As soon as she inserts the key into the chain on her neck, she is decapitated by it, much to Kanades surprise and joy. The ground beneath the two recedes, leaving Kanade to slowly die from being hanged.

Talent

Guitarist

Super Danganronpa Another 2 - Kanade Otonokoji Introduction (Korean)

The guitarist of the duo band 'Melody Rhythm', Kanade is the instrumentalist for some of the bands most popular songs. Ever since a young age Kanade was gifted with playing the guitar and much more, and was even vocally better than her twin sister despite their respective talents. To receive 'Hibiki's love', however, Kanade began to sabotage herself for Hibiki to excel in what she was passionate about, and for herself to have a better relationship with her sister. Kanade decided to become the guitarist of their group once they decided to debut into the music scene, and even changed the type of music she wanted to play to fit with Hibiki's visions and personal taste.

After a special performance the twins perform to Sora, Sora describes Kanade as 'talented' and her performance as 'splendid'. During another special performance both of the twins perform to raise the surviving participants spirits, Sora goes into a little more detail in her thoughts such as; there being no error in how Kanade played the guitar. The twins were both able to perform through many of their songs without any rest, showing a bit of depth to their passions in music[5][6].

In chapter six it's revealed that Hibiki and Kanade aren't actually Hope's Peak students, but were still performers in the music industry.

General Skills

Hibiki proclaims Kanade as a talented dart thrower, a possible result from her many gifts since childhood, proclaiming her as a 'semi-ultimate dart thrower' in chapter three [7]. Kanade proclaims herself to have been better at everything compared to Hibiki, even if the latter had put all her effort into beating Kanade, including her own ultimate talent. Since a young age she's been gifted academically, athletically and talent-wise, and some of these skills still come into use until her death; such as using her intelligence to solve murder cases and plot out her own. However, wanting to receive 'Hibiki's love' after feeling she was being hated by her sister, Kanade would've sabotaged herself in everything to make Hibiki seem better at a young age, though it doesn't seem to have faltered her skills oddly[5].

Trivia

  • In the SDRA2 popularity poll Kanade ranked second, with a total of 437 votes and 10.4% of the overall votes[8].
  • While Hibiki prefers more pop and sweet love songs, Kanade prefers rock and metal songs[5].
  • Kanade has killed approximately 60 people in total, and did not kill her parents until sometime after her teenage years (or the age she was in the simulation). [9]
  • During the performance the twins do in chapter two they both play the opening song to Suite Precure, in reference to the series they were inspired from.
  • If the students were ranked by school grade, Kanade would get a perfect score, along with Kokoro, Yuri, and Shobai[3].
  • Kanade doesn't have any friends, and deems herself and Hibiki above everyone. She only deems Hibiki to be worthy of being close to her, and doesn't want to make any more friends[3].
    • She splits her views of people into three categories; Herself, Hibiki, and Irrelevant Person[3].
      • Even if she had made a friend and got help from them, nothing would change[3].
  • The brainwashing video from Danganronpa 3: Future Arc would be able to change Kanade. However, she wouldn't let it happen in the first place[3].
  • She may have known Emma's status as a Void prior to the class trial. As it wasn't her goal to find the Void's, she didn't bring it up[3].
  • Kokoro, Shobai, and Kanade, even more so than Mikado, are considered the three worst people in the game[3].
  • Kanade and Hibiki have completely different food tastes, although it's unknown which food either of them like[3].
  • Kanade has a big appetite[3].
  • If Kanade and Kokichi met, LINUJ believe they would squabble with each other[3].
    • Kokichi's sprites were used to reference Kanade's[3].
  • Hibiki believes that she and Kanade have a synchronous connection. Kanade disagrees with this[3].
  • Kanade's TTS sprites' outfit is a clear reference to the classic outfit metal Rockstars would wear, this reinforcing the fact Kanade prefers rock and metal songs.
