Kill/Cure: Beautiful Vice is an upcoming English fan game originally created by the American developer Moboxer but is now being directed by Schlen. The story will take place its own universe with an original cast. The theme will be "Virtue vs Vice".

Moboxer exited the project in an "indefinite hiatus" in July 2020. He handed full creative control over to interim-director and collaborator KHeartz. As of October 7th, 2020, the project is active once more with a development team helmed by director Schlen, formerly known as Nachquana, and co-director KHeartz, who later on decided to step down to focus on his programmer activities. ShadeCR took over as a co-director in 2023, but also stepped down a year later. The project will no longer have Moboxer's input and is expected to diverge from his original vision due to the few documents the new team had available to work with.

Creation and Development[]

Moboxer stated production for the series starting in November of 2017[1]. The first trailer was released publicly on July 26, 2018, which featured footage of the full cast in a Class Trial along with names and a full group shot. On August 15, 2018 the voice actors for Hiroaki Uzuki, Naiomi Danjuma, Oniji Itagaki, Fan Fan Long, and Shiori Nakagawa were announced, and an open casting call was opened to find voice actors for the remaining 13 characters[1] which attracted a total of 3,673 entries[2]. On September 16, 2018 the remaining cast voice actors were announced[1]. From February 4th to May 9th, 2020, character illustrations for everyone were slowly released, starting with Hide and ending with Yahto. On May 3rd 2020, a casting call was reopened for the new voice of Toya Inamura, stating that her previous actor had relinquished their role due to personal reasons[1].

Characters[]

Details about the cast were expanded upon on Moboxer's Tumblr with short profiles about each character, as well as answering asks about their development. He was quoted as saying Danganronpa series creator Kazutaka Kodaka served as a reference for the character designs[1], and their designs were mostly from Moboxer's original concepts, however some artists added their own details to them which Moboxer approved. Some designs were inspired by other media Moboxer enjoys, citing examples such as Ikki Namiki whose design was inspired by the role-playing video game Brave Fencer Musashi and Momoe Soga's design taking inspiration from the character Jun the Swan in the Japanese animated franchise Gatchaman[1]. In another post, Moboxer stated Fan Fan Long's color was inspired by jiangshi, Chinese "hopping" vampires[1]. Moboxer has also cited a previous original character as a base for the protagonist Hiroaki Uzuki[1].

For names, he explained that he picked them based on how they sounded, as opposed to meaning[1]. The characters' Ultimate talents were decided based on a character's personality as they were developed[1].

Development Issues and the Departure of Moboxer[]

Danganronpa: Kill/Cure was originally scheduled to debut around December 2018, but was pushed back to early 2019 due to the complexity of the project. However, from December 12th, 2018, Moboxer stopped development on the project, taking an unannounced 6 month hiatus. This hiatus included quietly leaving the Kill/Cure Discord server, ceasing using any social media related to Kill/Cure, and severing contact with most of his team and his fans, leaving them in the dark as to his well-being for several months. On June 21st 2019, Moboxer returned to the Kill/Cure project with an apology for leaving everyone in the dark for so long and delaying the project, citing that the hiatus was a combination of "falling on hard times" in his personal life that caused a "loss of spirit and excitement that made me stay away (...) I was so disheartened that I just kinda wanted to run away. I can't even imagine the utter confusion I left behind being absent for half a year. I was ashamed, and instead of opening up about my issues, I tried to hide away". He also stated that the ambitious scope and high pressure of the project had lead to him burning out, stating: "It was a lot for me to take in despite having help. (...) I pretended I had everything under control, but that wasn't the case. (...) I kept making decisions to appease everyone, afraid of disappointment". After his return and apology, most of the original Kill/Cure team re-assembled, and production began again soon after, with a new streamlined workflow to help decrease the workload involved and prevent another burnout.

Production resumed without a hitch for a full year, with sprite sketches and other project assets publicly released occasionally to fans as teasers within the Kill/Cure Discord server. Over the course of May 2020, Moboxer revealed a series of brand new character splash illustrations for each of the cast members, and on June 29th 2020, Moboxer announced on Twitter that "July is our new target month for our biggest and final update for Kill/Cure. We're sorry for the postpones. This year has been nuts for many reasons, but we're ready to push forward. This update will be the most transparent we've ever been. There will be two videos: a promo and a progress report shortly after."

A week later on July 7th 2020, Moboxer unexpectedly took another unannounced hiatus, this time not only leaving his social media but entirely deleting it, including the Kill/Cure Tumblr, Twitter, and YouTube accounts (which also functioned as his personal accounts), leaving only the Kill/Cure Discord server as a point of access for fans and project staff. The planned progress report videos were never posted.

Instead of going dark as he had in his previous departure, Moboxer instead passed control of the project over to his friend and collaborator KHeartz, who became Kill/Cure's interim director. In a statement from KHeartz in the Kill/Cure Discord server, he clarified that "Moboxer has sent a couple of individuals, including myself, a letter declaring his decision to step down from the team in order to recuperate from the plethora of misfortunes this year, both personal and globally. Moboxer's absence is indefinite: whether it is only a few days or permanent, no one knows for sure." Moboxer gave KHeartz access to all assets related to Kill/Cure and permission to continue work on it. The project went on a several month hiatus while the remaining members of the team regrouped, re-assigned management, and decided on how to proceed with the project.

New Development Team[]

On October 7th, 2020, an announcement was posted on the new Kill/Cure Twitter outlining the current development situation and new development team structure. The project will be helmed by two directors instead of one - technical director KHeartz, and artistic director Schlen, formerly known as Nachquana. The aim of having two directors is to spread the pressure of helming such a high profile project and to try and prevent the burnout that Moboxer experienced. With time Schlen took over as a main director and KHeartz stepped down to focus on his programming activities. It was revealed that although Moboxer had relinquished all of his materials to the new team, they were widely unfinished with no character backstory or personality documents - only a short page with the chapter-to-chapter plot overview. As such, the new writing team - comprised of Haru-Suwan and Cross of CrossPawGames - were hired with the aim to have full creative freedom on the script but keep the general themes that Moboxer originated.[3] Due to disagreements on future approaches Haru-Suwan as well as CrossPawGames decided to part ways the following year with their past works continuously being used with permission. Lead writer ShadeCR and director Schlen opened new writing applications in summer 2022, recruiting four new writers on October 25th 2022: Story writer, Rebus; murder scenario writer, Livewire; script writer SuperIQAndi and free time event writer, inflammable-liquid. On March 13th, 2023, ShadeCR took over as a new co-director.

As of October 2022 the Team Kill/Cure is actively working towards a prologue release.
