Appearance[]

Kokoro's VR avatar has light yellow eyes and short, unkempt taupe brown hair with two long ear-like hair locks that stick up on both sides of her head. She wears a pair of round, metal-rimmed red eyeglasses.

She wears a long-sleeved loose maroon sweater with a light pink ruffled strap almost covering her shoulders, two braid-like embroidery flowing down her sweater, a black tie with an orange lower half where her previous school symbol is shown, and tight black shorts that reaches only the uppermost part of her thighs. Underneath her sweater, she wears a deep plum collared sleeveless shirt.

She also has a small wound on her right knee, which is concealed by band aid, and she wears light blue slippers resembling the cartoon character "Bonobono". In her illustration, she dons a white lab coat over her clothes.

Kokoro is always seen carrying a light purple iPad with her.

Outside of the simulation Kokoro's appearance is generally more uncared for compared to her VR avatar, with bags under her eyes and longer unkempt hair. It can be estimated that Kokoro's somewhere within her late thirties to early fourties. She's the second oldest participant[5].

Her attire changes quite a lot, too, with Kokoro now wearing a long white labcoat that reaches past her knees, a black t-shirt, a pair of rouge pink tracksuit bottoms with white vertical lines down the sides, and an identical pair of the light blue "Bonobono" slippers she wears during the game.

Creation and Development[]

LINUJ describes Kokoro as the "hidden boss in an RPG game". Kokoro is said to of taken the route as a psychologist the process the main game. She's also the character with the most design changes out of any of the other characters thus far, mainly as the plot and her character was developed more over time. Originally when she was first designed there wasn't any plans to make her acquainted with Mikado Sannōji or related to the plot, but was eventually involved later on. Despite this she was still planned to be the mother of Mikako Kurokawa ever since she was first designed[4].

In her earliest design nothing was reminiscent of the Kokoro shown in the game, mainly as her character hadn't been created other than being a psychologist. She used to have long leg-length hair that was tied into a ponytail, long side bangs, a pair of circular rimmed glasses, a lab coat, a vest with uncolored clips, a shirt with unknown sleeve lengths, a tied ribbon, and a skirt. In the same drawing her design was revised slightly; her ponytail was higher and reached to her waist, she had colored streaks in her hair, the ribbon was changed into a tie, the vest was changed into a dress, and there were buttons that replaced the clips in her previous design[4].

Her design was revised once more a bit later, reflecting the current design of Kokoro more heavily, as LINUJ didn't like how her first design looked - comparing it to Rei Mekaru's design from 6.5. Her hairstyle was changed to have antenna-like bits of hair that was more of an accident while drawing, shorter and more tidier hair, a labcoat, an untucked and long-sleeved shirt, and a vest and tie. At this time her character still hadn't been created, and so her personality was slightly different[4].

LINUJ continued to work on Kokoro's design for a longer period of time, after having worked on her character more. Her design now resembles her prototype design more heavily. Her hair was made to be a little curlier, though remained neater in this design compared to her next two, she wore a loose tie with no design at the time, a jacket with pockets, an iPad, an untucked shirt with the top button undone and the collar neatly folded, and a pair of black shorts[4].

After a bit more work Kokoro's prototype design was worked on more. Her design is now almost equivalent to her finalized one, yet baring certain changes. Her tie now had a logo and a design, her labcoat was changed into a sweater, she used to wear an untucked and long-sleeved shirt which would later be changed into a vest, a pair of black shorts, and a pair of 'bonobono' slippers. There were also some personality differences between her prototype design and the release of the trial edition of the game, as she was somewhat more emotional[4].

Stats[]

Two of Kokoro's highest scores go into reasoning power and intelligence; both scored with an 'A'. Her score in intelligence was ranked a little lower than what may have been expected because of her short time in the game, and she would've presumably shown it more if she lived any longer, and was mainly ranked on her 'basic intelligence'. Behavior also was ranked with an 'A' due to her actions within the simulation such as; attempting to persuade Emma Magorobi into helping the participants, finding the Void members, creating an SOS signal, and etc.

Physical ability is ranked with a 'D' (though LINUJ states that there was/still is consideration for scoring her with an E), a likely outcome of spending her entire life researching emotions.

Humanity is also ranked with a 'D'. During the simulation she may have received a 'C' in score, but once Chapter 0 was released and her past with Mikako and Sojiro was revealed it lowered by a score. LINUJ was also considering giving her a rank of 'E' instead. This primarily comes to her lack of emotions, other than curiosity, as she would go beyond the morality of a normal human being when it came to researching them[4].

Name Etymology[]

Kokoro's first name is written in Japanese hiragana as こころ, meaning "heart" or "mind". Her surname uses the kanji 光 (mitsu), which means "light", and 目 (me), which means "eye". Her surname's pronunciation likely refers to the phrase 見詰める (mitsumeru) meaning "to gaze at something", so when combined with her first name, her name can be read as "gazing at someone's mind", which fits with her talent as the Super High School Level Psychologist.

Personality[]

Due to her advanced insight into human vital signs and thought patterns, Kokoro can predict the behavior of others and essentially "read their minds". However, this insight causes her to have problems socialising, as her ability to predict what people will say causes her to alienate herself. Despite her expertise in human emotion, her own emotional responses are, ironically, subdued.

Kokoro says that she doesn't like being in large crowds of people, only being in them when it was necessary. This is prominent during the party Setsuka was throwing, where she had been reluctant to join the party, and had only done so due to Monocrow forcing her to stay.

After the events of the first trial, Kokoro would decide to be less of an active help towards finding the other members of Void, fearful that her discoveries would lead to her death. Despite what she had said about this, it would be later discovered after the second class trial that Kokoro had full intents on helping the group, but by doing so in a more 'in the background' way.

This way of thinking may have been a main cause for her later talk with Emma Magorobi, someone who Kokoro had been suspicious of being a member of Void. This talk would reveal that Kokoro hadn't wanted to expose her to the others in a maleficent way, and she instead would offer her to do so herself in a way which would also help the other students. However, Kokoro appears to misjudge what she can say at times, as she'd soon mention a trigger for Emma's memories, which would lead for the latter to fall into a fit of insanity.

Kokoro has the dream of studying the primitive emotion, and was keen on discovering what it had been, finding it, in her own words, to be fascinating. [6]

She is one of the 4 smartest students in the school trip.[7]

History[]

Early Life[]

As a young child, Kokoro exhibited the symptoms of alexithymia, a personal trait characterized by an inability to identify and describe one's emotions, most notably in her absence of feeling other than her sharp sense of curiosity. Her biological parents grew upset over their daughter's apparent lack of emotions, to the point they eventually gave up on parenting her - Kokoro would be put into the foster care system and then later adopted by a wealthy family from which she took her surname. Despite these drastic changes in her life, the young Kokoro felt no emotion regarding them[4].

It wouldn't be long until Kokoro's curiosity led her to take an interest in her condition and emotions, and she began to research to gather a better understanding of them. Her adoptive parents were supportive of this, and often funded the materials Kokoro needed in her research, unaware of what would later happen to her. Kokoro's understanding and knowledge built up over time until she grew incredibly adept at identifying the emotions of others, and she would go on to pursue the profession of a psychologist[4].

Kokoro mainly spent the remainder of her life in a lab with other psychologists. Soon, her life began to change, as she wanted to learn more about emotions, though the materials she had still left her thoughts unanswered entirely. She had been aware that another psychologist in the lab, otherwise known as Sojiro Kurokawa, had been developing feelings for her for a while. They soon married and conceived a child, Mikako Kurokawa, who Kokoro would experiment on for the sake of her studies; something Sojiro agreed to out of love for his wife[4].

However, Sojiro felt a growing remorse for these experiments, and one day, he took Mikako and fled to the mountains. While his status remained unknown for the years to come, he had actually died in these mountains and lost Mikako, who fell into a river. She would later be saved by a man named Hanzo Kisaragi, who had passed by the stream on this day, and then later adopted by him as well[4].

Kokoro was unaware of these events for the rest of her life, and didn't bother to try reaching out to Mikako or Sojiro, dubbing the former as a 'failed experiment'. Unbeknown to Kokoro, her daughter would eventually be accepted into Kibōgamine Gakuen under the title of Super High School Level Exorcist, where she would one day be forced to participate in a killing game.

The tragedy soon began anywhere around seven to eight years later[4].

Utsuro Research[]

During the events of the tragedy, Kokoro spent a majority of her time in a laboratory in an unknown part of Japan. At an unknown point in her life, Kokoro also came across a man named Mikado Sannōji, a person trained with hacking.

SDRA2 - Chapter 0 CG - Mikado and Kokoro discussion

After meeting Mikado, they would begin to work with each other, with him funding some of her projects. One of these projects included an AI of Mikado, which he would work on the programming and creation of while Kokoro supervised.

On an unknown day, Mikado would rush into Kokoro’s lab with a new code for this AI; testing it would be met with success, pleasing Kokoro to a degree. This would soon change after Mikado handed her his month's pay, resulting in a mix of worry and disappointment as she saw that the money Mikado gave her was not clean - it was earned by hacking. [8]

The two would talk for a bit longer, until Mikado searched through Kokoro’s computer and - with permission - asked to input sample data into it. However, her files were unorganized, leading for Mikado to accidentally click onto the wrong folder; a collection of Mikako’s emotions up until death. Mikado briefly questioned Kokoro about the folder until the name ‘Utsuro’ was brought up, resulting in Mikado punching the wall in frustration. [8]

Afterwards, Mikado would request for the folder to be scanned to learn more about what happened; though Kokoro was reluctant to do so until Mikado offered more money. [8]

Kokoro would later be kidnapped for the Utsuroshima Killing School Trip, taking the role of the ‘Super High School Level Psychologist’.

Utsuroshima Killing School Trip[]

Kokoro was one of the 15 students to introduce herself to both Sora and Yuki Maeda.

After a while all of the students par Syobai Hashimoto went beside the Monocruise. In this time, after a suggestion of going for a swim was given by Setsuka, all of the students (Save for Sora, Yuki, Kokoro, Emma, Mikado, and Yoruko) would agree, borrowing swimsuits from the supermarket to swim. After Yuki said he would give up, and began to enter the water, everyone including Kokoro would fall unconscious. After a while, the students would wake up finding out that they were dressed in their talent outfits, and that their swimsuits were removed. An anonymous announcement would soon play, telling everyone to gather at the centre park.

SDRA2 - Prologue CG - Monocrow declaring the Killing Game

In response, Kokoro along with the other 14 participants, would head to the centre park. At arrival, Monocrow would appear. It was announced that he was the one who kidnapped everyone there, and the only way to leave was to kill someone, thus announcing the Killing School Trip.

After the announcement was made, Kokoro would begin work on a transmitter. Only moments before Yuri offered his life for a woman to escape, she would once again enter the cafeteria, though only to state that there were no signals that the transmitter could pick up. A day afterwards, the party would begin. Kokoro would appear to be with Emma during it, though was reluctant to do anything, and had stated she had wanted to leave multiple times throughout the party.

Soon after, the body of Yuri Kagarin would be discovered. Once it was, Kokoro would ask the participants "What do you think of this murder?". Despite most of them being confused by the question, it would help her discovery of the killer, due to her reading the emotions from their answers. She would claim that she knew the killer at the beginning of the class trial, though hadn't said so till they confessed it. Her intelligent theories and assumptions saved the students from framing Yoruko and guided Sora to the right path of choosing Hajime as the culprit.

After a while, Teruya Otori would be brought to the Killing Game. However, she would soon say that she wouldn't be a part of the main group anymore out of fear for her own life. Along with this Kokoro would say that she wouldn't help the group anymore, cancelling any predictions she had.

Meeting with Emma Magorobi.[]

During Kanade's and Hibiki's concert, Kokoro would meet with Emma Magorobi. Kokoro would ask for Emma to join

with the rest of the group again, being the only condition for her to join the rest of the participants once again. Soon afterwards Kokoro would claim that Teruya was acting as her bodyguard, and would be watching over the two at that very moment. However, she hadn't realised that Teruya had in fact been at the concert still, leaving her unprotected at that very moment. Emma would soon show her real emotions to Kokoro which would allow her to gain the knowledge of the members of Void, their motives, and Emma's past relationship with her father. She would soon bring up that the group would help Emma with her problems with her father. However, unlike what she had predicted, Emma would fall into a deep rage over the flashbacks that were brought with the mention of her father. Emma would soon knock Kokoro out while in this rage. [9]

Fate[]

SDRA2 - Chapter 2 CG - Kokoro Mitsume in bed (1)

After being rendered unconscious, Emma would begin work on her plan to kill Kokoro. While everyone had helped to take Kokoro back to her room, Emma would leave last, stealing her student handbook to help her enter and leave the room later on. While Kokoro was still unconscious from Emma's attack earlier, she would saw off one of her fingers, then tying her up, as well as gagging her, then putting her into the refrigerator in the room. This would be set to the maximum coldness to speed up her death. Soon, Emma would head to the Pavilion, taking a wig which would become a part of the disguise she'd use later on during her plan. To hide this, however, she would break the statue and replace the wig to hide the removal of the wig previously there. Using Kokoro's pad Emma would contact Syobai, falsely telling him about a disease Kokoro had caught at some point during the night. While disguising as Kokoro, Emma would restrict her talking to give the impression that there really was a disease, which would be confirmed by Shobai when the other participants had found out about what had happened.

Days would go by as Kokoro froze in the freezer, while Emma pretended to be her. To attempt to help the discovery of her killer, Kokoro would leave a dying message behind with the icicles. By using her nails she would inscribe the letter 'F' into one of the icicles, identifying her killer as one of the females. Kokoro would soon freeze to death in the freezer, while the culprit begun to deter the method of death. Pulling out her dead body, Emma would cut off the hands and feet of Kokoro, placing her on the bed. She would then let out dry ice in the room as a way to deter the method of killing.

Legacy[]

Due to the notes that Kokoro left behind in the refrigerator, Sora and Kanade Otonokoji managed to pinpoint Emma as her killer during the class trial. Emma was soon sent to her execution after this was solved, saving the other participants in the process.

Sora briefly remembers Kokoro, Kanade and Shobai in the fifth class trial, while she ponders if they would be able to solve the trial without their help. Kokoro's capsule would later be found in her bedroom by Sora and Yoruko Kabuya during their investigations. It's noted by the two that her last name was different to the one used throughout the game.

Talent & Abilities[]

Psychologist[]

Super Danganronpa Another 2 - Kokoro Mitsume Introduction (Korean)

Kokoro, as an intelligent individual with an extensive knowledge of mostly any emotion, has often been dubbed as a mind reader by those around her for her accurate predictions or guesses of what people are feeling. Her knowledge of emotions developed from alexithymia, which left Kokoro void of any emotion excluding curiosity for her entire life, as her curiosity and interests in it and emotions began to develop more and more over time. Over time Kokoro managed to be able to recognise emotions almost immediately based off of a person's eyes, expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Her predictions can go as far as to tell when a person is lying - a prime example being Hajime Makunouchi, as Kokoro was instantly able to pinpoint him as the killer of Yuri Kagarin. Her knowledge of emotions is also shown within her work with Mikado Sannōji; she was able to accurately help program an AI to have in depth emotions. While this experiment failed in the end, AI Mikado began to express his emotions more and develop over time, showing how well her knowledge of emotions actually was. Kokoro also managed to make predictions of who every Void member was based on the participants overall demeanour's during the progression of the game.

Despite this her skills and knowledge can only go so far. For starters her predictions easily go down quite a bit from person to person; such as Emma and Hajime. As for Hajime she states that the sunglasses he wore made it harder to predict what he was thinking and how he was like simply by their existence, while Emma was able to suppress her aura and fool even Kokoro with how well she managed to hide her true emotions. She also was unable to catch onto Kanade Otonokoji's true personality due to spending such a short amount of time around her.

Her talent also means that Kokoro will go to inhumane means to gather the research she'd wanted. She even states that she would experiment on other people in her free time events with Sora, and even did so outside of the simulation with Mikako Kurokawa. Nothing seems to deter her from her research due to her lack of guilt, and she would've likely continued if Sojiro hadn't ran away with Mikako.

Trivia[]

  • Kokoro ranked 15th in the populartiy poll, with 49 votes and 1.2% of the total votes[10].
  • If the students were ranked by their school grade Kokoro along with Kanade, Yuri, and Shobai, would all get perfect scores[5].
  • If Kokoro had managed to survive longer, she may have been able to notice Kanade's true personality, as there'd be less people left for her to watch out for[5].
  • If Kokoro met Yamato Kisaragi and Mikako in the afterlife, Kokoro wouldn't care about Mikako, while the both of them wouldn't recognise her, due to Mikako losing her childhood memories. Kokoro deems Mikako a failed experiment, so doesn't care about her[5].
    • If they'd found out about what Kokoro did to Mikako, they would both get mad. Yamato more so than Mikako[5].
  • Kokoro, Kanade and Shobai are the worst people out of the participants[5].
  • Kokoro didn't mean everything she said to Emma, and was instead trying to make her join her side and leave Void[5].
  • Kokoro reads a lot[5].
  • Shobai and Kokoro both sleep late[5].
  • Kokoro's favourite food is fast food, and her favourite season is Winter[5].
    • This is because she can eat it fast, meaning she would have more time for research[5].
  • She doesn't play games[5].
  • If Kokoro and Emma met in the afterlife, Kokoro wouldn't care much about what Emma did, believing it's in the past. Emma would realise her wrong however, and regret what she did[5].
