Appearance[]

Mikako is a tall young woman who has a slender physique. She has pale light skin, black eyes and unkempt shoulder-length black hair tied in a ponytail with a vivid purple beaded scrunchie. She also has bags under her eyes.
Mikako's uniform consists of a white short-sleeved dress shirt with side pockets and a light gray tie, a red plaid skirt, white midcalf-length socks and deep orange-brown loafers. Over her clothes, she wears a grayish brown cloak, which she pulls up in a hood when she is performing an exorcism.[5] She also wears a golden cross necklace and large purple prayer beads that she wears as a necklace.
When she was younger, Mikako used to have her hair down. She wore a yellow shirt with a white collar and red string tied just below the collar.[5] In a childhood photo of her and Yamato in the game, she is seen wearing the same outfit, but a bright purple beaded necklace and a bright purple beaded bracelet worn on her left wrist are added as her accessories.
Up until the investigation in chapter 4, she wears her ballroom outfit, which consists of a floor length dark blue dress with a plunging neckline and sheer white flowy sleeves that reach halfway down her upper arm, a dark grey belt with a gold rectangular buckle around her waist, white gloves that almost reach to her elbow and her cross necklace. The colour of her shoes is unknown. She wears her hair in a high bun with her bangs down.
Name Etymology[]
Mikako's first name is written using the kanji 美 (mi) and 佳 (ka), both meaning "beautiful", and 子 (ko), meaning "child". Her surname, Kurokawa, means "black river".
Personality[]
Mikako is a quiet person and doesn't talk very much, and when she does, she sticks to short replies after long periods of silence, often causing people to forget she's around or become surprised when she eventually speaks up. She is unresponsive in a conversation, and avoids making eye contact with anyone she talks to, giving her an impression of an unfriendly student to most of her classmates. Despite this, her expertise on the paranormal allows her to sense danger and promptly prevent it from happening, or at least remedy the situation. She can also see through one's "inner demons", which is very evident for her talent. Her silent personality fails to falter in most situations, even when the Killing Game is first announced or when the first motive is given to the students. This, however, helps her in certain cases, as she remains composed in mostly every type of situation. She also appears to be somewhat analytical, being the first student to notice how it'd be impossible for the rope that's hanging Kiyoka to be wrapped around the pole in the manner it was done in.
History[]
Early Life[]
According to her mother, Kokoro Kurokawa, she had planned to raise a newborn child in a secret room in order to study primitive emotion. She married a fellow researcher who was courting her, and gave birth to Mikako in the laboratory. As soon as she gave birth to her daughter, Kokoro implanted a research chip in her brain and immediately began the experiment, sealing her daughter away from the outside world by putting her in a secret room.
But while the experiment was going smoothly, Mikako's father, Sojiro, who must have agreed to the experiment, fled with his daughter, severing their ties with Kokoro. They ran up to the mountains in the area they were in, but Sojiro died from unknown means and Mikako fell into a nearby stream. A passerby named Hanzo Kisaragi saved her however, and later adopted her after failing to find her biological parents.
Mikako would now live within the Kisaragi mansion with Hanzo and her adoptive brother, Yamato Kisaragi. When he was younger, Yamato would often squabble and pick on Mikako, but eventually stopped doing so. Mikako grew an interest in exorcism at some point while Yamato followed in his family's footsteps to become an inventor. The two attended Hopes Peak Academy together, with both of them scouted by the school as the Super High School Level Exorcist and Super High School Level Inventor respectively.
Killing Game[]
Prologue[]
Sometime after being accepted into Kibōgamine Gakuen, Mikako, along with her other classmates, gathered in the entrance hall prior to orientation.
When Yuki introduces himself to her, she didn't seem to talk back. Struggling to interact with her, Yuki asked her name, and she quietly responded, "Mikako... Kurokawa...". He also asked for more information regarding her talent, however, the rest of their conversation remained silent, forcing Yuki to leave her out of awkwardness. After Yuki concludes introducing himself to the other students the group of fifteen all began to enter the Kibōgamine Gakuen building. After their first step however, everyone lost consciousness from an unknown cause, later waking up in classrooms.
After she woke up Mikako was quick to gather back to the Entrance Hall and wait for the other participants to gather back to the area they had fell unconscious. Yuki was the last person to wake up with an anonymous announcement, revealed to be held by the soon to-be-met Monokuma, redirecting the students to the Gymnasium. Without another option the fifteen all gathered in the gymnasium where they first met Monokuma, and equally being shocked to hear of the start of the Killing Game.
The mysterious figure reveals himself to be Monokuma, the self-appointed headmaster of Kibōgamine Gakuen. He announces the start of the Killing Game, much to everyone's shock and horror. When Tsurugi attempted to attack Monokuma, Mikako noticed in advance that there is something strange with the surveillance cameras and immediately warned Tsurugi to step back as he would be shot by the guns attached to them, saving his life.
Chapter 1[]
During the first day of the killing game, everyone would investigate the school for clues, however, what Mikako investigated during this time is unknown. A few days later, Monokuma would hand out the first motive in the form of a video. The contents of her video and her reaction to it are unknown. After the first body discovery announcement, everyone proceeded to investigate for possible clues to solve Kiyoka's murder case. Inside the girl's bathroom, Mikako discovered and pointed out that the rope holding the corpse up wouldn't been able to be tied inside the bathroom due to the way the hook was attached to it.
Chapter 2[]
After Mitsuhiro’s execution, Tsurugi creates a group to ensure the safety of the students. Everyone, including Mikako, stayed, with the exceptions of Rei, Kinji and Kizuna. The students would investigate the places that had newly opened up after breakfast, Mikako investigating the power room on the second floor. A few days later, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and give them the second motive: each other's secrets. While the students aren't allowed to choose their own secret, they are allowed to choose each other's secrets. Mikako's secret is received by Yuki, and is that she might be talkative. The secret she receives is unknown. The next day, Akane mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin. Kizuna accepts.
After the body discovery announcement rang out, Mikako and Akane would be the first people on the scene. Mikako would be the one to direct Yuki and the other students not already there to the switchium in the power room. She can't be found during the investigation, and when everyone gathers in the elevator room she is notably late, though she can't say the reason why. It is later revealed she was investigating the kitchen to confirm the knife was missing from there.
The day after Ayame's execution, everyone excepting Akane, Tsurugi, Yuki, Rei and Kinji would talk amongst themselves and decide to break away from Tsurugi's authority. They'd also elect to avoid Yuki due to his secret. When they tell Yuki this, Monokuma tells them that he planted an 'imposter' early in the game, even before Kiyoka died. Everyone assumes it to be Yuki, and they promptly kick him out of their group.
Chapter 3[]
After Yuki is expelled from their group, the students, with the exception of Akane, would investigate the areas that had newly opened up, Mikako investigating the art room on the third floor alongside Rei. After investigations conclude, she would call everyone to the dining hall to corroborate their findings.
When in the dining hall, the students would tell the others about what they found, Kinji in particular finding a cellphone in a drawer in one of the classrooms. Since Kinji doesn't know how to use the phone to call for help, he gives it to Kakeru, who finds that there's no signal. He then gives it to Rei, who figures out that the issue is the area, and discovers that Kiyoka was the original owner of the phone through looking at the phone background. The phone leaves the students confused, as since they are believed to be in the middle of Tokyo, there should be cellphone service, as well as wondering why only Kiyoka's phone is in the school. The phone is left in the hands of Kinji for safekeeping. Mikako would then show everyone the reason for calling them all to the dining hall, taking them to the storage room and saying she'd heard someone's voice from behind it, explaining that it was the reason she was late to the trial elevator the day before. After Kakeru and Haruhiko moved the bookshelf, the students saw a giant hole in the wall with a staircase leading down. When they go to enter, Monokuma stops them, showing them a gun attached to the ceiling that would shoot if they attempted to enter. With Monokuma guarding the entrance, the students are forced to give up, but Rei and Kanata reason that there must be something important down there.
The next morning, Akane would join the group for breakfast, though she would be in her shell-shocked state and unresponsive. Due to Satsuki's words of trusting Yuki, he would be reinstated into their group.
Later the same day, Yuki would find Mikako in the hall of the dormitory floor. He would ask what she's doing, and would respond cryptically, saying she was looking at the ceiling, then tell Yuki to go to bed.
The next day, Monokuma would call the students to the gym and present the third motive to them, a video that would show the students their desires or something they want to obtain. Unlike the first motive videos, these videos would be viewed in a soundproofed dark room, so no one other than the student viewing each video could see. The students are also told they can't say tell anyone else the contents of their video or show their reactions. The contents of Mikako's video are unknown, but she is visibly shaking after watching it, and the order the students went in is largely unknown, but Mikako went last. Everyone was extremely uncomfortable by the time the motives ended. Shortly after Monokuma left, Akane would snap out of her shell-shocked state, screaming and running out of the gym. The others would question why she did so, with Kinji proposing it may have been due to the motive video.
Late the next day, Yuki would encounter Mikako and ask her about her secret from the second motive, asking her if it was a lie. She was unable to say anything besides "yes", as her head hurt when she tried. On their way back to the dorms to rest, they would hear a scream near the dorm rooms and go to investigate. They would find Haruhiko, Satsuki and Teruya surrounding a bloodied Akane, who had attempted to kill herself. Akane had done such a thing to join Ayame due to the contents of her motive video. Mikako would tell Yuki to move and put her hands on Akane's arms, telling her to wake up and remember Ayame's last words telling her to live. Mikako also says that Akane is "so much more" which prompts her to collapse from a headache.
The next day, Mikako would show up late to the group's meeting in the dining hall, prompting Yuki, Akane, Haruhiko, Satsuki and Teruya as well as herself to look for Kakeru and Kanata, as they hadn't shown up. Mikako, along with Akane and Haruhiko, would find Kinji unconscious on the second floor with a bloody head. Satsuki, Teruya and Yuki would come, and Kinji would wake up shortly after. He is confused at the scene, saying he remembered going to the library at night, then a pain in his head, but can't remember anything after that. They all then hear a banging noise coming from the third floor, electing to split into two groups to investigate the two floors. Mikako, along with Kinji and Yuki, opt to search the third floor.
Mikako would investigate the casino, sometime after meeting up with Kinji at the science lab. After discovering they can't open the door, she fetches Yuki and Rei, who had been the source of the banging noise, for assistance. After an attempt at pushing it open, they hear a scream and flowing water from inside the science lab. Rei uses her elbow to break the window in the door, managing to get it open. Water immediately floods the hallway, and Rei urgently tells everyone not to touch the water. When they all look into the science lab from a distance, they find Kanata's burned, tied-up body on the floor, triggering the body discovery announcement.
A second body discovery would then sound, worrying Mikako, and she runs down to the second floor. The others would follow, and she would see Kakeru's corpse and Tsurugi's unconscious body. Everyone excepting Rei, Yuki and Akane would then take Kinji and Tsurugi to the infirmary to take care of their wounds. Shortly after, everyone excepting Tsurugi would return and Monokuma would appear. Monokuma gives them the Monokuma File 3-1 for Kakeru and 3-2 for Kanata. Everyone is concerned about the prospect of a serial killer, so Monokuma implements the rules that no student can kill more than two people and that no one can kill after an investigation has started.
After Kinji's execution, Monokuma would randomly stop working. Mikako would notice first and urge everyone to run to the warehouse. The students would go down the stairs leading from the hole in the wall to find an empty room with a gate and unlocked door. Monokuma would soon show up and say that he had disposed of what had been down there, leaving everyone crestfallen at their hope of escaping being crushed.
Chapter 4[]
Two days after Kinji's execution, Mikako would show up to the morning meet-up with Haruhiko, Satsuki, Teruya, Yuki and Akane. The day before, ties between the five of them had become tense due to Yuki despairing, and Haruhiko would tell Mikako what had happened to make the mood between them so tense. She would agree with Akane and Satsuki's sentiment, telling the boys not to give in to despair before Monokuma would call all the students to the ballroom. When they gather there, Monokuma tells them he prepared a dance party to help lift their spirits up. The students are skeptical, so Monokuma prepares a memorandum that he signs to prove his intentions. The students go into change rooms divided by sex to change into ballroom outfits, Mikako being the 7th one ready and out. Monokuma then tells them to form pairs in order to begin dancing, Mikako forming a pair with Teruya by default after the others had all formed pairs.
Music begins to play as the pairs dance, and after they are finished dancing, Monokuma leads them to a dining hall to eat. Everyone is lively and having fun until Teruya asks to save some food, and Akane asks to change her clothes, to which Monokuma denies. He then tells the students they aren't allowed to leave or change, and Tsurugi would bolt out of his seat, Rei walking after him. Yuki, Akane, Mikako and Teruya would follow Rei and Tsurugi, while Haruhiko and Satsuki would stay behind and continue to eat.
Upon finding the door was locked, Mikako, along with everyone else, would then go back to the dining hall to find Haruhiko and Satsuki had eaten almost all the food and explain the situation. They would then begin to investigate the ballroom. Mikako would investigate the arsenal, specifically looking at the symbol of the Kisaragi Foundation on a banner. After they had reconvened and presented their findings, Monokuma would call them all to the dance hall to distribute keys to the dorm rooms to each student. He would also announce the fourth motive, which is the ballroom itself, making it impossible to leave unless killing someone. Monokuma also tells them that they aren't permitted suicide, and that the reason for getting rid of their clothes was to prevent them from unlocking the door using their student handbooks. They are also told that all rules except the vandalism and violence against Monokuma rules are void while in the ballroom, there is no set 'night time' and the morning and night broadcasts will change.
Monokuma would sound the nighttime broadcast, though they don't have to sleep or stay in their rooms. In order to keep order, Yuki instructs Teruya, Akane, Mikako, Haruhiko and Satsuki to stay in their rooms as normal, however Mikako would investigate through the night and eat a little bit as a snack. The next morning, the six gather in the dining hall, Akane distributing the food in an appropriate way, and Mikako would bypass one meal since she had eaten at night. The six meet back up again at dinner, only to find the amount of food had decreased more than it should have. The next day, they begin to lose hope about getting out when Monokuma shows up and says they can leave if they kill, but he tells them he'll reward their investigation. Monokuma had hidden a treasure within the ballroom, and would reward the person who finds it. He also mentions that the prize for finding the treasure is something the students have lost.
In the morning on the sixth day, Akane and the other five students in their group find there's no more food left. Mikako accuses Haruhiko of eating some of the food at dawn, saying that she'd been camping at the dining room entrance since the day before. Mikako also says that Satsuki had eaten the food alongside Haruhiko. Teruya becomes livid with them for eating and blaming it on Tsurugi and Rei. Haruhiko attempts to defend himself, but only exposes himself and Satsuki. That night, Teruya voices his despair at the situation, causing everyone to begin fighting, but Rei would walk in to hear the details of the food situation. Mikako tells her what Satsuki and Haruhiko had done, and when Haruhiko attempts to blame her for the food depletion, she says that neither Tsurugi nor her had eaten very much since the second day. She then shows them some food she had found in Teruya's dorm room, saying he had hidden food for himself without the others noticing. Haruhiko becomes angry and gets in Teruya's face to voice his hypocrisy. Haruhiko shoves Teruya into Yuki, and Teruya does the same to Haruhiko. Yuki and Satsuki restrain the two, and Rei comments that means of escape other than murder is impossible.
2 days later, Mikako and the others would be called to the dining hall by Yuki to come up with a policy on how to act in the future. Teruya comes up with the idea that two people sacrifice themselves, and opts to pick who by drawing lots. Tsurugi then walks into the dining hall and gives everyone a gun to commit mass suicide. Haruhiko and Yuki attempt to stop him, but Tsurugi throws them into the side of the fridge. Yuki attempts to calm Tsurugi down, and Tsurugi goes to tackle him but trips on a bit of the carpet. The others tie him up, gag him and leave him in his room, Mikako holding his room key in the event he needs to be let out.
That night, Mikako would monitor the hallway to see if anyone left their rooms. Due to her room being right next to the arsenal, she could hear if someone went in by hearing the doors open and close, but couldn't hear anything inside. From Mikako's perspective, she first saw Haruhiko and Satsuki going from left to right, but the arsenal doors didn't open. Satsuki then went from right to left, but she was alone. A little later, Teruya went from left to right, and she heard the arsenal door. She then heard the arsenal door again, and Teruya went from right to left. Haruhiko then went right to left. Haruhiko and Satsuki are seen together shortly after going from left to right, and the arsenal doors were opened. A while after they went in, Satsuki went out alone, going from right to left.
The next day, Yuki and Teruya would find Haruhiko's dead body in the arsenal, alerting Mikako and the others to the scene and triggering the body discovery announcement. Monokuma immediately gives them all food to recover their stamina in order to investigate, and gives them their normal clothes and student handbooks back.
Once Yuki leaves the arsenal during his investigation, he would talk with Mikako. She would tell him that she had monitored the hallway through the night. She'd tell him she saw Haruhiko go into the arsenal, but wouldn't tell who else went in, saying she'd reveal it during the trial. She'd then go to investigate the arsenal herself.
After Satsuki's execution, everyone excepting Rei goes to Tsurugi's room to check on his wellbeing, however he would not respond. The next morning, Rei would call Mikako to her room to for an operational meeting. Once everyone is gathered in Rei's room, she tells them she had created a device that would jam the surveillance camera in her room. They discuss the mysteries surrounding Kibōgamine Gakuen and their imprisonment, as well as finding the identity of the mastermind. Rei also tells them her idea that a long time had passed since they entered the school, and that they just didn't remember it. Mikako stands immediately upon hearing that, prompting Rei to grow suspicious over how much she knows and is hiding. Mikako is unable to say anything due to a headache. The morning announcement sounds soon after, and Monokuma would instruct the students to go to the gym. The students, excepting Tsurugi, do so.
Chapter 5[]
Upon meeting in the gym Monokuma introduces a new transfer student as the motive, a boy named Yamato Kisaragi, the Ultimate Inventor. Yamato introduces himself in a joking manner, posing cutely and calling himself an idol, making everyone confused. Monokuma explains he has an abnormality in his brain that causes him to act strangely, and that he was introduced late due to 'circumstances'. Mikako walks forward and says his name, prompting Rei's suspicion, and she asks how Mikako knows him. Confronted, Mikako suffers a headache and blood pours out of her ears, nose and eyes. She faints, and everyone crowds around her to help her. Monokuma then leaves, and the students take her to the infirmary.
The next day, Mikako would attempt to talk to Yamato. She asks him how he came to be the way he is, and tells him he was in a faraway place for the entire killing game up until he was introduced. Yamato is unable to speak properly in response, and Mikako ends up running away due to her headaches.
On the third day, Mikako would hear a body discovery announcement and go towards the gym. She would find Rei, Yuki, Akane and Teruya in front of the infirmary and ask what had happened. Rei tells her not to worry as Monokuma had been mistaken, and Monokuma tells her that Tsurugi had shot himself. Despite the wound however, the bullet was defective and only hit the skull, saving his life, but he'd live as a vegetable due to brain damage.
The next morning, Mikako would be walking past Yuki's room when he attempts to force her to tell the rest of the students what she knows, only stopping when she shows visible pain. She runs away to investigate the fifth floor.
It is revealed during Chapter 6 that when Yamato chases her to the fifth floor, they both become paralysed by Monokuma. He then blows up a detonator device Yamato had Mikako install in his chest as a means of insurance if they failed in their mission. Monokuma then takes the pair to the record room and manipulates Mikako's body to stand over Yamato holding the knife, effectively framing her.
During the investigation, Mikako would give Yuki a bloody notebook that belonged to Yamato. One of the pages had the numbers 0430, which was the password to the record room. She then tells him to not ask her more questions as she can't tell him anything more.
During the trial, Mikako would try to save her own life by lying that Yuki had forced her into acting as an accomplice in Yamato's murder. Her lies are eventually unraveled by Akane and Rei, and she is voted as Yamato's killer. Just before her execution, Rei would ask her to tell them what she knew before she died. Mikako would do so despite incessant headaches, telling them the mastermind had been with them since the killing game began. Her brain would then explode, and she dies on Rei's shoulder.
Nonetheless, her corpse is executed in Runaway Train Ghost Rider. She was strapped to a go-kart-like vehicle with a bomb on the side counting down from 60 seconds. A Monokuma rides a similar go-kart towards her as if to crush her and blow her up between the two vehicles. The vehicles get closer and closer as the bomb counts down. However, her execution would stop right before the vehicles collided and the bomb exploded with one second left due to a building-wide power outage.
Chapter 0[]
Mikako would wake Yuki up and scold him for sleeping in class. Due to her loud voice, Kiyoka would tell her to quiet down. She would then tell Yuki that Haruhiko was planning an activity for the rest of the class and invited him to come along, but he would decline. She would then comment that Yamato was late and hadn't been at school for two weeks due to Hanzo's funeral. She asks Yuki if he would like some bread, but he declines. She would then walk back to her desk.
Yuki later goes to talk to her at her desk. Under the impression he had changed his mind about not attending the activity, she appears excited, growing dejected when he tells her he still wasn't attending. She would ask if he wanted some cream puffs, and he decline again, prompting her to call him stupid.
Chapter 6[]
It is revealed during the trial her sudden change in personality from her school life to the killing game was done by a memory storage device Yamato had made to combat the memory-manipulating machine.
In a flashback of Utsuro's memories during the trial, Mikako would escort Yamato away from Utsuro, telling him she didn't like him. The flashback would then cut to Mikako scolding Yamato for not telling her about something that was clearly troubling him, and the two would fight before she runs off. On the day the tragedy broke out, another student would tell the class to run before a Monokuma killed them, then advanced onto Mikako before Yamato shot it to pieces. Mikako and Yamato were the last of the classmates to be captured by Akane and Utsuro for use in the killing game, Mikako pleading with them to change their minds. They wouldn't, and she would be captured.

Talent & Abilities[]
Exorcist[]

Not much is known about how Mikako was scouted as the Super High School Level Exorcist, and the blog Yuki reads at the beginning of the game doesn't mention much about her either. However, it's shown within the third chapter that Mikako can sense and read auras of other people. Once doing so, she's able to perform exorcisms on any bad auras she detects, an example of which being Akane.
