Appearance[]

Nikei is a young man of medium height with light skin and black hair. His hair is slightly curled, medium length above the shoulder, side-parted on the right side. He has lavender eyes and his left eye is covered by his hair. Also, he has rich facial expressions.
He has an ecru hat with a black ribbon on his head. He also wears an ecru, knee-length single-breasted coat with no belt, which is open and unbuttoned. Inside the coat he wears a long-sleeved white shirt with the first button unbuttoned, a purple double-breasted vest with four golden-yellow buttons, and black trousers. He also wears white socks and brown shoes.
Nikei’s neck is surrounded by an orange, brown-spotted neckerchief. A long red scarf also hangs around his neck just inside the coat, which is unknotted and descends nearly to his knees.
Nikei always has a white small notebook dangling from a string around his neck, which he uses to record information. And a ballpoint pen is stuck behind his right ear most of the time, except when he is going to write something with it.
Outside of the simulation, Nikei is the same age as Yuki Maeda, Sora, members of Void, Teruya Ōtori, and Mikado Sannōji's human counterparts[3].
Creation and Development[]

Nikei was designed at some point during the development of Chapter 6.5 from Danganronpa Another, the predecessor to the game he's featured in. His talent was inspired by reporters and journalists, though more so corrupt ones, as LINUJ describes himself as a satirist of corrupt journalists. LINUJ describes that Nikei's journalist abilities come from luck, but fails to be on the level of a Super High School Level talent on its own[4].
His design and, to a certain extent, personality was inspired by Lubbock from Akame Ga Kill, specifically their long hair. LINUJ describes that his personality was alike to Lubbock's up until Chapter Three, which is when Nikei's true personality began to show[4].
LINUJ describes Nikei's initial design to 'not be in the Danganronpa style'. Compared to his finalised design he went through certain design changes, though none too drastic from the original, wearing a tie, wearing his scarf along his shoulders, and having shorter bangs. When looking back through the sketches however, LINUJ had decided that he couldn't decide on a talent based on his design, and thus decided to polish Nikei's design a bit more. The only notable difference to his final design was his tie remaining - but between the change from his initial and prototype designs; his scarf was worn inside of his overcoat, he now had a notebook and pen on his person, and his hair was made longer[4].
Originally LINUJ intended to release Nikei's past during the original writing of Chapter Four, but once it was changed Nikei's past was never properly revealed in the main game. It's possible that Nikei's past will be mentioned in the yet to be released Omake mode, however. Since becoming the leader of the 'Children of Utsuro' (otherwise known as Void) Nikei had unintentionally became veiled, especially shown in the later chapters[4].
Stats[]

Overall, similar to Yuki, Nikei's overall stats are mostly average.
His lowest stat is in Physical Ability, ranked as 'D', as all of Nikei's time was devoted into journalism. While there was time to eat, sleep, drink, and write articles, there wasn't any left for focusing on his health, thus his low score.
Nikei's behaviour is ranked with a 'B'. Despite his behaviour in Chapter 4 his score is higher than it would've been due to his past leadership experience with the Children of Utsuro- if it wasn't for that, his score would've likely been lower.
Human Nature also ranks with a 'B' due to Nikei's vengeful personality. As this meant Nikei saw even his own life as expandable he wouldn't focus on his own quality of life as a human being.
Otherwise Nikei also ranks with a 'B' in reasoning power and intelligence[4].
Name Etymology[]
Nikei's first name uses the kanji 日 (ni), the shortened form of "nichi" means "day" ,"daily" or "sun", and 經 (kei), means "classic works" or "economic". His surname Yomiuri is written by using the kanji 讀 (yomi) meaning "to read" or "to study", and 賣 (uri) meaning "to sell".
His surname is a reference to Yomiuri (読売新聞), a Japanese national daily newspaper founded in 1874, its name means "reading by selling". His first name is also a reference to the largest Japanese financial newspaper named The Nikkei (The Nihon Keizai Shinbun, 日経新聞) . Both surname and first name are related to his talent as the Super High School Level Journalist.
Personality[]
Nikei lives by the motto that "the pen is mightier than the sword", and he values his right hand more than anything. He's very talent driven and admits to Sora how he has no other hobbies than his work. Nikei tends to be oblivious to his surroundings when on the hunt for a scoop, but, despite his eccentricities, he seems to be a typical high school student who loves to talk.
Later chapters show Nikei's distrust for the other students. After the murder of Kokoro and death of his fellow Void colleague, Emma, Nikei completely shuts himself off from the other students, unwilling to converse with them or even attend the morning meetings. After revealing as the former leader of The Void in Chapter 4, he explains his rude and distant personality was merely an act. It was revealed to be a lie in the end, manipulating Teruya to lock the remaining students, along with himself in the tower, and plotting to force Yuki to kill Shinji and make him the culprit.
In the end, Nikei's true personality is shown to be incredibly selfish, rude, cold-hearted, and bitter. Taking advantage of as many people as he desires to fulfill his own personal benefit, without any remorse to those he hurts. He enjoys keeping tabs and information on other people to hold a certain power over everyone. Nikei also has a god/superiority complex of sorts, holding himself on a higher plane than everyone else, thus creating a delusion that no one matters other than himself. It is stated that Nikei always tries to be the best at everything, but despite the superiority complex Nikei convinces himself he has, he's extremely conscious and insecure. And due to his fear of being completely powerless or viewed as weak, Nikei coats his insecurities with an arrogant and self-centered mask. But even though Nikei shows a distain and hatred for basically everyone around him, he apologized to Hajime in the final Void Theater, showing he has respect and tolerance for certain people.
History[]
Believing that the best way to communicate with the world is through pen and paper, Nikei gained the title of Super High School Level Journalist for his uncanny ability to gather information.
Using his ability to scavenge information, he finds out that three other people have also encountered Utsuro in their lives. The people in question being the boxer, Hajime Makunouchi, the actress, Emma Magorobi, and the painter, Iroha Nijiue. Nikei plans to pursue them all so that they can collaborate in their search for Utsuro.
After meeting with Hajime, Emma, and Iroha, he directly tells them he’s come to the conclusion that they all had one thing in common: they were blessed by Utsuro. However, this person suddenly disappeared, leaving Emma, Iroha, Nikei, and Hajime alone. This caused Nikei to create the organization named Children of Utsuro to search for this person while each one of them were doing their jobs that were related to their talents. Progress regarding finding Utsuro was very slow and had nearly no leads, and so Hajime, Emma, and Iroha started to greatly doubt Nikei. With a fear for lack of control and at a loss for what to do, Nikei grew more antisocial and incompetent than he already was. It is noted that Nikei never really got along with his friends from his perspective; but Emma, Iroha, and Hajime considered him a good person still. What Nikei’s colleagues—and Nikei himself, really—didn’t know that he harbored a great sense of care and trust for them.
One day, man named Mikado Sannōji managed to contact them promising to help them, stating that he too had been helped by Utsuro, but needed to be the leader to properly help them. Iroha, Emma, and Hajime himself all agreed immediately after growing impatient under Nikei’s leadership. A series of unknown events occur with the Kisaragi Foundation seeking out Mikado and the finalized change of leadership within the Children of Utsuro. Nikei is greatly enraged and furious with this decision and vows that he will end Mikado, sheltering himself. The Children of Utsuro don’t think much of Nikei past this point. Mikado, now leader, rebrands the Children of Utsuro as the Void, and kickstarts his plans for a killing game in hopes of meeting Utsuro that way. While the others still accept to join the game, despite their hesitations, Nikei is much more peer-pressured into joining as he states his disdain for the game. [5] Nikei was always aware of Mikado’s lies and manipulations, how Mikado tried using his past and desires to bait him into the game. Aware of these facts and all possible outcomes, and yet still Nikei joined in out of his competitive nature, overseeing the Voids’ fates, and not wanting to miss out on a chance to meet Utsuro. He probably didn’t think much that this is what Mikado wanted all along, or else he would’ve outright refused if known before. Many factors of Mikado’s mentally manipulative involvement and Nikei’s growing distrust for everything around him is what made him lenient on relying on himself in the killing game.
Killing Game[]
Nikei was one of the students to introduce himself to both Yuki and Sora, introducing himself as the Super High School Level Journalist. Soon after his introduction, Yuki would gather everyone at the beach area to discuss the situation. Soon, Setsuka would suggest going for a swim in the water after suggesting that they could borrow swimsuits from the shop on the island, after she discovered that there had been no staff members there. Everyone apart from Shobai, who had gone beside the Monocruise instead, Emma, Sora, Yuki, Yoruko, Kokoro and Mikado would borrow swimsuits, soon heading into the water. Yuki would soon give up, saying he would enter the water. Once he did, however, everyone would fall unconscious.

After waking up, Nikei and the other participants who had gone into the water would discover that they had been swapped out of their swimsuits, discovering they were now back in their talent uniforms. An anonymous announcement would soon play, directing the participants to the central park. At arrival, Monocrow, who would say that he had been the teacher of the school trip soon after his revelation, would announce the start of the Killing School Trip.
Several days into the announcement of the Killing Game, Setsuka would give the suggestion of hosting a party. Many of the participants, including Nikei, would seem to agree to the idea, and would thus attend the party. Nikei would be one of the few to not become drunk, and would thus head back to the Monocruise after the end of the party.
At the end of the first class trial, and after the execution of Hajime, Nikei and the other two Void members would head to the camera room to interrogate Mikado, believing that he had betrayed them. Due to this belief, he along with the other two members would voice their complaints, though this was completely ignored by Mikado, who would simply shrug off anything that they had said. After Mikado retaliated, saying that fake executions and fake body discoveries wouldn't work, he would order them to leave, the members following his command.
Teaming up with Setsuka[]
After Hajime's execution, Nikei decided to betray Void to try and stop Mikado. It wasn't until after Emma's execution when he needed a partner who could help him, and he ended up choosing Setsuka due to her cybernetic eye. Her eye allowed her to record and review what she has seen, allowing her to keep an eye on Mikado without raising suspicion.
Nikei told Setsuka about him being a member of Void but he still managed to convince her to be his partner. They would have frequent back and forth chatter as Setsuka made an attempt to actually grow a friendship with him, but Nikei valued getting the job done above all, and left her to spy on Mikado.
Unfortunately, this partnership ended in ruin when Kanade and Hibiki killed Setsuka and burned the letter that contained every piece of information that she had learned before Kanade and Hibiki were executed. [5] With no one alive left to help him, Nikei would continue to grow even more distant after yet another one of his plans failed.
Meeting with Iroha[]
After the third class trial, Nikei would meet up with Iroha after the latter would request to speak with him. Soon after finding each other, Iroha would ask for confirmation about Nikei defecting from Void, him giving confirmation towards this.

He would be quick to ask why Iroha was there in the first place, believing him defecting from Void had nothing to do with her. However, Iroha would quickly confirm why she was there to Nikei - she'd say that Mikado had told her to kill, but had gotten scared and tried to make Nikei take her place instead due to the original plan. He'd react coldly to it, believing it was selfish of Iroha, and thus left quite quickly. [6]
Confession[]
Early on in Chapter 4, Nikei sends a message to everyone to come to the dining hall, once everyone aside from Shobai and Teruya arrives, Nikei confesses to being one of the three remaining members of Void, much to the annoyance of Mikado who quickly leaves.

After Mikado leaves, everyone else starts getting angry at Nikei before Sora convinces everyone to listen to what he has to say. Nikei immediately drops to his knees and performs a Dogeza while apologizing for kidnapping everyone and forcing them into a killing game.
After everyone gets Nikei to stop apologizing, the group asks him who the last member of Void is. Despite Iroha asking him to take her place as the next murderer, he chooses not to out her as the last remaining member in case someone tries to murder her.
Nikei then reveals that he will likely be killed by Mikado for outing himself as a member of Void and that he has to act fast before he dies. He also reveals that he was the previous leader of Void before Mikado and that the reason he defected from Void was because of his hatred for Mikado.
Nikei tells everyone that Void was formed to find a certain someone who saved them all from their terrible childhood, however, they were never able to find them and that Mikado became the leader by contacting Void with a video message where he said that he knew the purpose of Void and that he has knowledge about the person they are looking for.
Nikei then reveals that he was working with Setsuka to keep an eye on Mikado and that the reason he was distant from everyone was that he didn't want to make her look suspicious.
Before he concludes their meeting, he asks that everyone to keep the fact that he is a member of Void a secret from Shobai and Teruya since he finds them untrustworthy. [5]
Nikei's plan[]

Immediately after "apologizing", Nikei would go on to meet with Teruya in secret. He manipulates Teruya, completely flipping the "apology" he made to the other participants, so that Teruya would grow to distrust everyone else except Nikei. Due to Teruya agreeing to help Nikei, he would lock up the participants while holding a gun, interrogating them. With the help of Teruya, Nikei got ahold of a gun found in one of the towers. And would pursue his own plan.

Learning from the previous failures of his other plans, Nikei finally grew desperate. He valued his raw and unchangeable hatred for Mikado over meeting Utsuro, so he decided it was time to ruin Void's plan and figure out how to get rid of Yuki Maeda. He tazed Yuki unconscious and dragged him to the lower floors, where he also lured Shinji too. From there, Nikei would instigate a fight between himself and Shinji, then quickly tazing himself. Yuki would wake up to believe that Shinji had attacked Nikei, confused and unstable, Yuki would pick up a piece of glass and slit Shinji's throat. After seeing what he had done, Yuki ran away just for Nikei to wake up soon after, with the later also leaving after successfully making Yuki a blackened. Unbeknownst to what was about to happen.
Nikei would come back later to discover Shinji's charred body, different than what it was last time. It was revealed in the trial later that Sora had come across the scene, witnessed everything, and used Nikei's hand to slit Shinji's neck again, making Nikei the culprit. Then Shinji had actually survived the ordeal, and killed himself to ensure no one would get executed for killing him.

Last resort and fate[]

In a fit of rage from Sora's actions and the failure of yet another one of his plans, Nikei would have a meltdown similar to that of his former colleagues in Void. Choosing this as his last resort, refusing to go down as a failure, he held everyone (excluding Yuki and Mikado) at gunpoint, not afraid to shoot everyone on the spot. His new plan was to kill everyone and himself in the room except for Yuki and Mikado, so that the killing game would no longer work and Mikado would have no other option. In everyone's efforts to get him to stop, Nikei would pull the trigger only to have the gun explode along with his right hand.
Overcome with pain and despair, Mikado would laugh in his face and mock him for the last time. Saying how Mikado knew Nikei would betray Void, and how all of Nikei's plans to destroy Mikado actually unintentionally benefitted him by traumatizing Yuki more. Showing that Mikado equally hated Nikei back, he implemented a rule saying how defecting from Void would result in execution. Nikei went down traumatized from the pain in his right hand, and sulking knowing all his plans to hurt Mikado actually helped the enemy. He would be dragged away while cursing Mikado for the last time, and even in the execution he made a desperate attempt to survive, only to die by jumping off a building because he grabbed with the wrong hand.
SDRA2 - Chapter 4 - Execution
After his execution, Nikei found himself in the "void theater" as his post self: A left hand without any of his body parts, not even a mouth. This made him unable to speak a word without writing, which Emma summons into existance for him to write on, albeit very messily due to it not being his dominant hand.
Talent & Abilities[]
Journalist[]

While it is noted Nikei's only hobby is his own talent, Ultimate Journalist. It has been said that his "skill" has not come out of his own work, but purely from luck[4]. Despite all this, Nikei is shown to have amazing memory from his notebook, and general note taking abilities. Writing cleanly and quickly which proved useful to investigations. Nikei states several times that his job as a reporter is one of the only talents he's ever had, while admitting to being inferior to practically everything else he does, though it is unknown if this was a lie or not.
Trivia[]
- Nikei ranked 8th in the popularity poll, with 292 votes and 6.9% of the overall votes[7].
- All lines during the last Void theatre are Nikei's true thoughts[4].
- LINUJ had initially wanted to include Nikei's past to some variation in the main story. However, as development went on, he decided that there was no space for it, especially after Chapter 4 had been changed. His past will instead be shown in the Omake mode[4].
- It was implied that Nikei could have been the protagonist of this mode prior to its change in format[4].
- Nikei writes in cursive. While he writes fast, it still retains some of this sharpness[3].
- Nikei has average grades[3].
- LINUJ had multiple candidates for Nikei's death portrait; a bloody X, bloody tears, or a handprint. He then had the idea of writing "LOL" all over his portrait, so he went for it[3].
- Even though Nikei loves getting his scoops, it is stated that he's not that obsessed over scoops, therefore he would not risk his own life to get it.
- Nikei's TTS sprites' outfit is a clear reference to the Greek god Hermes, who was the one in charge to report messages and news to the other gods. This might be a reference about how Nikei spread news and events because of his job as a journalist.
