Plot Synopsis[]

"Eden's Garden Academy, a school designed to find the best and brightest of America's youth, has prepared a special orientation for its very first cohort of Ultimate Students. But things are not so clear when Damon Maitsu, the Ultimate Debater, finds himself waking up in a strange academy. With his 15 other classmates stuck in the same situation, they are told that a killing game will commence. It's up to Damon and his classmates to survive this killing game, and uncover the secrets that lay buried under the mystery that surrounds Eden's Garden Academy." – Official Synopsis[1]

Plot Summary[]

Prologue: Vows Woven by Stitches and Needles[]

This plot summary contains major spoilers for Project: Eden's Garden!
PEG - Ch0 CG - The Train

Damon Maitsu, the Ultimate Debater, explains the concept of ultimates and their place in society before revealing that he has been invited to attend Eden's Garden Academy, a college for students possessing ultimate talents. Damon joins fifteen of his future classmates on the train, but not long after, a smell coming from a suspicious bag within the train car is noticed. The gas being released by the bag renders the students in the train car unconscious.

PEG - Ch0 CG - Eva Asleep (3)

Damon wakes up inside a boiler room alongside a girl, whom he finds was only pretending to be asleep. She introduces herself as Eva Tsunaka. The two realize they have electronic watches, later referred to as "Tozu Trinkets," attached to their wrists. Damon climbs on the girl's shoulders to look through a vent near the ceiling, where he notices a collapsed man on the other side.

PEG - Ch0 CG - Toshiko Peeking

Damon and Eva make it to the room they had caught a glimpse of through the vent, which turned out to be the dining room, where they find the unconscious man, who introduces himself as Wolfgang Akire, the Ultimate Laywer. Also present is Grace Madison, the Ultimate Golfer, who woke up inside the nearby pantry. Damon recalls seeing both of them on the train. The four notice a young-looking girl standing in the doorway, who politely introduces herself as Toshiko Kayura, the Ultimate Matchmaker, whom Damon also recalls from earlier in the day. Toshiko offers to introduce the group of four to the remaining eleven students present.

Toshiko leads the group to the courtyard, which the group momentarily believes may be a means of escape, before Toshiko points out that the sky is fake and is actually a dome with a sky projected onto it. The five hear a girl crying within the courtyard, who turns out to be Eloise Taulner, the Ultimate Fencer. They also encounter Desmond Hall, the Ultimate Marksman, leaning up against a hedge. Having been introduced to both of the students in the courtyard, they enter the main building situated across from the dormitories.

When they enter the second building, the group is greeted by an enormous tree growing in the center of the lobby, which Eva notices is fake. They meet Jean DeLamer, the Ultimate Ship Captain, whom they mistake for a pirate at first, followed by the Ultimate Historian, Ulysses Wilhelm, whom they find fast asleep. Next, they speak to Kai Monteago, the Ultimate Influencer, whom Grace criticizes, before a friendly girl, Diana Venicia, the Ultimate Cosmetologist, comes to Kai's defense. The group then encounters a large man pestering a smaller man for his name, the former introducing himself as Jett Dawson, the Ultimate Drag Racer, and the latter as Mark "Mayhem" Berskii, the Ultimate Music Producer. Cassidy Amber, the Ultimate Pro Gamer, enthusiastically introduces herself, and they move on to the "youngest self-made billionaire," Wenona, the Ultimate Entrepreneur. Finally, they greet a strong-looking woman, Ingrid Grimwall, the Ultimate Blacksmith.

PEG - Ch0 CG - Cara Koskinen's Body

The sixteen students reconvene in the courtyard and finish their introductions. Eva reluctantly reveals her talent as the Ultimate Liar, which causes unease among the other students before a voice rings out through the loudspeaker welcoming the class to Eden's Garden Academy and requesting that they enter the dormitories once more. They comply and are immediately faced with the corpse of an unfamiliar girl lying up against a doorframe in the hallway, causing panic.

Eva touches the corpse and announces that the body is fake. Jean notices a tablet sitting underneath the dummy. When the tablet is turned on, it displays a body report. The same voice heard earlier makes another announcement, clarifying that the fake crime scene is a reconstruction of the real murder of Cara Koskinen, the Ultimate Teacher's Aide, and tasks the students with uncovering the details of Cara's death.

Damon reviews the information provided by the tablet, learning that Cara was stabbed twenty-eight times and suffered chemical burns to her eyes and scalp. Examining the body reveals blood under Cara's fingernails and turns up a loaded assault rifle and a bloodied knife in the surrounding area. In his investigation of the janitor's closet past Cara's body, Damon finds a stepladder, an empty bucket smelling of bleach, and a bottle of bleach on the shelf, which Desmond points out is empty.

PEG - Ch0 CG - Elevator

The same voice makes an announcement, concluding the investigation and instructing the sixteen to find and meet by the elevator for the class trial, found by the "Tree of Ignorance." In the building across the courtyard, they realize that they need to find the missing piece of the statue nearby the tree. Grace finds the missing eye, and after placing it on the statue, the elevator within the tree is revealed. After boarding the elevator, which brings them to the trial room, they assume their places at their podiums.

PEG - Ch0 CG - Murder Mechanism

The Class Trial begins with an explanation of the rules and a promise that if the students successfully solve Cara's murder, they will be allowed to leave that place. After Grace interrupts, she is administered an electric shock through her Tozu Trinket, which renders her unable to speak. Discussion of the murder, including questions about the murder weapon and how the items in the janitor's closet were used, led by Damon, confirms that Cara was stabbed with the knife found near her body, while the rifle found at the scene belonged to Cara herself. As she was walking through the hallway, armed, she entered the janitor's closet, where a bucket of bleach was propped above the door, which spilled, blinding her and causing the burns to her eyes and scalp. While Cara was incapacitated, her killer, who was hiding in the closet, stabbed her to death in spite of her fighting back by scratching them, resulting in the blood found underneath her fingernails.

Eloise voices her sympathy towards Cara, to which Wenona argues that the killer was acting in self-defense, as Cara was armed, evoking an emotional response from Wolfgang in Cara's defense. Damon chooses to support Wolfgang's argument by either urging the remaining students to trust in Wolfgang's intuition or by forming an argument that the brutality of the killing and the time needed to set up the bucket trap indicate a premeditated crime. After the class comes to an agreement, Grace calls out to the overseer, who reveals they had fallen asleep and asks the class to recount the crime, which they take turns doing together.

PEG - Ch0 CG - Grace Attacking Tozu (1)

Following the summary of the case, the voice that had been directing them makes an entrance, referring to himself as Tozu, the host of the Killing Game. After the students remind Tozu of his promise to let them leave, he reminds them that he only said they could leave "this place," referring to the trial room rather than Eden's Garden Academy, and that they will instead be participating in a killing game, to which he explains the rules. Grace strikes Tozu, knocking him to the ground, and repeatedly punches him. As she's beating Tozu, a gunshot rings out, the bullet grazing Grace's cheek. The shooter is a woman, the Killing Game's enforcer, Mara, who enters the room wordlessly.

Wolfgang raises the spirits of his classmates by insisting that because they are Ultimate students, they will not succumb to the Killing Game. The others chime in with agreement before Eva interjects, arguing that Ultimates have aspirations that could motivate them to kill more than anyone else. Damon voices his agreement with Eva and expresses his contempt towards everyone else, to which they are disappointed in him. Tozu leaves the trial room with Mara trailing behind him, and Damon realizes that he is trapped in a Killing Game with people who hate him.

Creation and Development[]

Pre-Development History[]

Project: Eden's Garden is a visual novel currently being developed in the Unity engine based on the Danganronpa series but set within a different universe. According to original creator Sean Lusk, the project was originally intended to be a live-action series, but the COVID-19 pandemic broke out early in development, ruling out the possibility of filming in person. Thus, it was ultimately decided to rework it into a visual novel more in line with the original source material instead.

The project was officially announced on YouTube with a cinematic trailer uploaded on January 9th, 2021[2].

On November 17th, 2021, an update video was uploaded to the project's YouTube channel explaining the vision for the project following Lusk's departure and opening a casting call for voice auditions, the results of which were later revealed in a voice actor trailer on March 26th, 2022[3][4].

August 2022's Dev Vlog was uploaded on August 27th, 2022, and outlined the progress made towards completing the Prologue and teased newly created musical tracks and 3D-modeled environments created for the project[5].

On December 9th, 2022, the official trailer for Chapter 0 announcing its release date was uploaded to the project's YouTube channel[6].

Release[]

The Prologue, "Vows Woven by Stitches and Needles," was released on December 17th, 2022, on GameJolt and itch.io, along with a two-part walkthrough released on the series' official YouTube channel.

On November 22nd, 2024, the official trailer for Chapter 1 announcing its release date was uploaded to the project's YouTube channel, followed by a new and improved version of the game's opening that premiered on December 18th, 2024[7].

Chapter 1 was officially released on December 20th, 2024, on GameJolt and itch.io, along with a two-part walkthrough that premiered live back to back on the series' official YouTube channel. Compared to the San Japan demo, the official Chapter 1 release featured differences in art assets and soundtrack.
