Appearance[]

Setsuka is a tall young woman with a curvaceous figure and pale skin. She has short pale cerulean hair that is put up into small curled buns. Her hair is held together by a black hair clip with a small yellow billiard ball labelled "9" attached to it, and a silver hairpin behind her head. She has plum eyes, with her right eye (the "devil's eye," as she would call it) closed most of the time. However, in one instance, its pupil is shown to have a target radar sign and emits light green aura.

Setsuka wears a gray long-sleeved pinstripe shirt with a small Peter Pan collar and a black tie that is neatly secured with a silver clip on its middle. She dons a red O-neck vest over her shirt with gold trim and three buttons. There are also diamond patterns on the right side of her vest, alternating from deep red to khaki green, and leading onto the same pattern on her matching frilly jeans. A black belt with brass buckle is tied around her waist. She also wears sheer brown tights and red heels.

In her splash art, and the trial release of the prologue, Setsuka is shown to wear a red skirt with a vertical diamond pattern and golden brim around the end.

Outside of the simulation, Setsuka is revealed to be an adult, and is roughly the same age as Shobai Hashimoto[3]. She has longer hair with bangs that completely covers her right eye, and a generally more tidy style.

She’s shown to wear a gray knee-length trench coat accustomed with black buttons, and a neatly tied equally gray belt. Underneath this, she wears a plain red shirt with an unknown sleeve length, and a black tie. She also wears a pair of black and white striped jeans, a pair of white socks, and a pair of dark brown shoes.

Creation and Development[]

Development for Setsuka had started at some point from 2014 ~ 2016. Setsuka was created with the intention of being a leader-like character that would raise other people's morals during the killing game, while simultaneously focusing on her own safety and survival. She was created to be similar to Shinji Kasai. Setsuka's death was planned to be gorey ever since the idea for her death was thought of. While LINUJ had doubts about it being "too gorey," in his own words, he went ahead and kept her death the same as it was when it was planned [4].

Setsuka's design has undergone very minimal changes since her prototype design, and has relatively stayed the same as it was created. She originally would've worn a nametag, but it would later be removed as LINUJ believed she looked more like a bartender than a billiards player[4]. Setsuka also used to wear a skirt, which stayed true up until the official release of the first chapter, though they would later be swapped out with a pair of pants instead. Official artwork - such as beta sprites and her character illustration - were released before this design change, and can be viewed on her gallery page.

Stats[]

SDRA2 - Stats - Setsuka Chiebukuro

Stats are purely for fun, as stated by LINUJ, and are thus deemed "non-canon." Points can range from as low as an E to as high as an S. Stats contain the following (in order); Intelligence; Reasoning Power; Physical Ability; Behavior; and Human Nature.

Setsuka has generally average stats in everything apart from Behaviour, with her lowest scores being in Intelligence and Reasoning Power. Setsuka receives a B in Physical Ability which LINUJ backs up with her frequent appearances in the Monocruise's fitness room, which is where a majority of Setsuka's free time events take place in. LINUJ further states that Setsuka likes to exercise after her job. Setsuka's highest score is in Behaviour, which she has an S in. Finally, Setsuka also receives a B in Human Nature because of her kindhearted nature and willingness to help the other killing game participants which, if by its own, would have given Setsuka an A in Human Nature. However, because of her devil's eye and her past issues of cheating while using it, Setsuka's score had been lowered.

Name Etymology[]

In Japanese, Setsuka's first name uses the kanji 雪 (setsu) meaning "snow", and 花 (ka) meaning "flower". The meaning "snow flower" likely refers to her blue hair and pale skin. Her surname, Chiebukuro, uses the kanji 知恵 (chie) meaning "wisdom", and 袋 (bukuro) meaning "bag" or "pouch", and together may refer to her ability in billiards (pocketing balls).

Personality[]

She has a laid back and optimistic personality, and she often treats others like children due to her mature appearance. In addition, Setsuka's laid back personality and mature appearance may have generated the name 'big sis,' which she's often referred by in the killing game, and potentially developed her habit of giving the other participants nicknames she'd use to refer to the others in daily conversation.

Setsuka's main focus in the Killing Game was to cheer everyone up despite the situation, hosting mini-events such as the beach party in the Prologue, party in Chapter 1, melody rhythm concert in Chapter 2, etc. She also tries to bring peace to the group of participants by cheering up and trying to be the moral support for some of the emotionally weak participants, such as Hibiki Otonokoji. When it's needed, she never shies away from comforting Hibiki or making plans for her and the other participants to meet up together.

Contrary to her joking personality, Setsuka can show concern and a much more serious side of herself in certain situations. This later leads for her to cover for Nikei Yomiuri during Chapter 3, keeping his secret to protect him from death for as long as possible, even if it leads for her to lie to others when directly asked about it.

History[]

Early Life[]

A lot of Setsuka's childhood isn't mentioned by her. She lived with her mother and her father; a billiards pro that inspired Setsuka into later pursuing a career as a billiards pro.

The earliest memory Setsuka recalls is one of her dads tournaments. She had one day, presumably like she had been doing for a while, been heading to one of the tournaments her dad had been participating in when an accident took place. This unnamed accident caused half of her face to almost be caved in, resulting in Setsuka having to undergo surgery. She barely survived what had happened to her, but the accident left her right eye ruptured. The doctors proposed that Setsuka would undergo eye transplant surgery - despite it being impossible to actually transplant an eye at the time - or replace it with an artificial eye, as she would otherwise be faced with blindness. Her parents were against what was proposed, however, a doctor had secretly done the transplant on Setsuka despite their complaints.

While the surgery was successful, Setsuka had undergone certain side effects. Namely; the replacement eye was able to record everything to her memory, but leaving both eyes open would result in dizziness due to the recording of her present and past life. Nobody found out about this eye except for her parents (and later on Sora). It's implied that her parents had never complimented the eye at all, which led for Setsuka to cover it up as a secret that only her friends would know about.

She soon pursued a career as a billiards player, even despite the accident, and began to perfect her skills in it. It wasn't long until she managed to win against pros and win a world billiards tournament at a young age, and she was destined to only win more as she further improved her talent over time. However, she was eventually found out to be cheating - Setsuka was banned from the billiards community for life, and had to pay numerous fines and whatnot for what she'd done.

By the time the tragedy came around, her past was behind her and many people didn't know about it. She began to now pursue a career as a detective, and it was also the time her skills began to appear. While not much is known about her career as a detective, other than following people around and using her devil's eye to her advantage, it is later found out in Chapter 6 that the Kisaragi Foundation had recruited her at some point to investigate the Voids/Mikado Sannōji. She would unfortunately be caught at some point, kidnapped, then forced into the killing game as a participant.

Killing Game[]

Setsuka was one of the 14 students to introduce herself to both Sora and Yuki Maeda. She reveals that she doesn't actually know much about billiards, yet her father does.

After a while, all of the students par Shobai Hashimoto went beside the Monocruise. In this time, Setsuka would suggest that all of the students should go for a swim in the water. Save for Sora, Yuki, Kokoro Mitsume, Emma Magorobi, Mikado, and Yoruko Kabuya, the rest of the students would agree, borrowing swimsuits from the supermarket to swim. After Yuki said he would give up, and began to enter the water, everyone including Setsuka would pass out. After a while, the students would wake up finding out that they were dressed in their talent outfits, and that their swimsuits were removed. An anonymous announcement would soon play, telling everyone to gather at the central park.

SDRA2 - Prologue CG - Monocrow declaring the Killing Game

In response, Setsuka along with the other 15 participants, would head to the central park. At their arrival, Monocrow would appear. It was announced that he was the one who kidnapped everyone here, and the only way to leave was to kill someone, thus announcing the Killing School Trip.

During a bonus scene, Setsuka would prank Iroha Nijiue, Sora, and Yoruko by texting them to come to the bathhouse, telling them all that she found something of importance. After a countdown from the four finished, Setsuka would push all three inside of the room, temporarily locking it while the three others would be met with the naked male participants, par Yuri Kagarin and Shobai.[5]

SDRA2 - Chapter 1 CG - Party

Afterwards, while tensions were still high, Setsuka would bring together Yoruko, Hajime Makunouchi, Mikado Sannōji, Sora, and Yuki to prepare a party. Once preparations were made, the party would begin with Setsuka being near Shinji and Yuri. Due to bottles of alcohol being replaced with the bottles of water, many including Setsuka became drunk, leading for her to be helped back to the Monocruise at night.

Dressing Room & Melody Rhythm Concert[]

A little after the events of the first class trial, Setsuka would discover the Costume Exhibit. As other participants passed the area, she would drag them into the exhibit. Emma and Iroha would be the first two caught, with Emma helping with the costumes being used. Yoruko and Sora would be the next two participants to pass with Setsuka dragging them in as well, while Emma helped with their costumes. Although the others hadn't expected it, Sora would state that Setsuka had helped release a lot of built up stress by bring them all to the exhibit.

SDRA2 - Chapter 2 CG - Setsuka Chiebukuro encouraging Hibiki Otonokoji

Approximately two days afterwards, Setsuka, Nikei, Yuki, and Shinji would meet up at the shrine area as they would build a stage and move pieces of sound equipment onto it. Hibiki and Kanade would arrive, with the former showing extreme distrust toward Setsuka's idea. However, Setsuka would soon discover that Hibiki still had trust in her, even though she wasn't showing it. Soon after, Setsuka would go to comfort Hibiki and encourage her to perform while saying that everything would be fine by doing so. By her encouragement, Hibiki and Kanade would perform one of their songs together to the other participants.

During the investigation, Setsuka would be able to discover a fact about the liquid nitrogen canister; she would prove that Kokoro hadn't been frozen in it as no remnants had been on the floor nor bed.[6]

Talent & Abilities[]

Billiard Player[]

Super Danganronpa Another 2 - Setsuka Chiebukuro Introduction (Korean)

The Super High School Level Billiard Player; Setsuka has won against numerous billiard pros in the past, and has won a world of billiards tournaments in the past. Despite this, she has no knowledge of how the game actually works, even stating that her dad would know more about the game than her. All of her talent comes from her "devil's eye" - an artificial eye that isn't seen that often outside of her free time events and body discovery. Her devil's eye allows Setsuka to be as good as she is at billiards, though this is classed as cheating, and just by using it her accuracy and odds at winning any game instantly goes up by a large amount. Without the use of her devil's eye Setsuka's skills in billiards is much lower, and was even almost beaten by Sora when playing the game with her. This is namely because of the recording function of her devil's eye. By comparing past tournaments into present day by opening her eyes, she's able to always get a perfect score no matter what.

Setsuka describes billiards as a hobby in her free time events with Sora; and that, despite her talent, she isn't fit to become a pro at it. Despite previously proclaiming she doesn't know anything about billiards, she further contradicts this statement by showing off a bit of game knowledge to Sora, describing the different types of variants of billiards that could be played; fluke, snooker, caron, and four ball specifically. She also has knowledge of different billiards techniques.

Detective Abilities[]

Outside of the simulation Setsuka became a detective, after the events of the tragedy. Her skills in this began to emerge, and she would mainly follow people around and spy on them. Setsuka never did anything that related to murders and is described to be a "real detective" rather than a "detective in fiction" by the game's creator, LINUJ. Due to this, her abilities in class trials and the investigative abilities were much lower than what may have been expected from a detective. However, she was deemed skilled enough by Tsurugi Kinjo and the other leaders of the Kisaragi Foundation, and would later be recruited by them to spy on the Voids and Mikado. Despite this, she was caught. Setsuka, due to having never been able to perfect her abilities, never developed her intelligence or reasoning power, thus leaving them the lowest out of her stats.

Trivia[]

  • In the SDRA2 popularity poll Setsuka ranked 6th with a total of 311 votes, and 7.4% of the overall votes[7].
  • LINUJ doesn't know if Setsuka's hairstyle is possible to replicate in real life.
  • Setsuka's note was a MacGuffin[3].
  • Setsuka has average grades[3].
  • If Sora, Setsuka, and Yoruko went nail painting together, they would all choose their own colors; Sora (transparent), Setsuka (Sky blue), Yoruko (hot pink)[8].
