Appearance[]

In Danganronpa Another, Tsurugi is a teenager of average height, with messy blue hair, and crimson red eyes.

Tsurugi wears a police uniform. The uniform would consist of a plain blue shirt with two side chest pockets and two yellow shoulder pads. A plain black tie would go over this. He also wears a black belt, dark blue trousers, and plain black shoes.

In his talent illustration Tsurugi is shown to wear a plain blue hat, with a golden badge attached to it, as the front of the hat has a black colour with a golden outline.

During the Chapter 4 party, Tsurugi's hair is styled to be slicked back, with one long lock partially going down his face. He wears a black blazer with golden buttons, underneath this being a long sleeved white shirt with a black tie, and a pair of black trousers. He also has a rose styled pin attached to his blazer.

After establishing the Kisaragi Foundation, Tsurugi appears much older, with a much paler complexion and serious disposition. His eyes have also become a duller red, as opposed to a bright red. He now dons a large dark gray military uniform, with golden pins on the lapels and golden shoulder aesthetics. On his left breast is a gold badge, and on his right breast is a pin representing the logo of the foundation. He also has a black cap with a Kisaragi Foundation pin at the front, featuring the logo overlapping a pair of golden wings. The cap also conceals his right eye, which is now entirely red and distorted, with the skin around it a sickly purple. Additionally, Tsurugi wears black gloves and boots, and has a white belt strapped around his torso for the suit.

Name Etymology[]

Tsurugi's first name is written in Japanese kanji 剣 (commonly pronounced "ken"), meaning "sword". His surname uses the kanji 金 (kin), which means "gold", and 城 (), meaning "castle". His surname can also be figuratively interpreted as "impregnable castle", emphasizing his tough personality.

Personality[]

Tsurugi is a calm and modest officer with strong leadership. He is a righteous person, who dreams of putting an end to crime and eradicating all evil in this world. Despite his accomplishments, he deems himself to be inadequate, considering the fact that crimes keep continuing regardless of his efforts. Perhaps due to this, he has a strong desire to end crime, even attempting to stop the Killing Game early on by pinning Monokuma to the stage wall.

Tsurugi appears to blame himself for not being able to stop the Killing Game, showing his goal of eradicating all evil closer than beforehand.

He appears to be an intelligent person, as described by Yuki during the prologue. This is further shown due to his ability to catch onto smaller pieces of evidence that may have not been caught onto had it not been for his training prior. This can be further backed up by him holding meetings with the other participants in the early days of the Killing Game.

History[]

Early Life[]

From a young age, Tsurugi was raised working in the police force under his father, Juu Kinjo, an influential figure in the police force, and was raised under his ideals.

Growing up, Tsurugi only had one person he would consider his one and only friend, Kouhei Sasaki, who worked under the police force with him. When the two were fourteen years old, Tsurugi's father, Juu, appointed Tsurugi and Kouhei to disarm a bomb that had been set by terrorists in a corporate headquarters building. Normally, Tsurugi would be the one to disarm bombs, but he was caught in a shootout, so he instructed Kouhei from afar on which wires to cut, not realizing that it was a trap. Kouhei died when the bomb detonated. Tsurugi holds himself responsible for Kouhei's untimely death, but it is stated that Kouhei would not blame him or hold any resentment towards him[3][4].

Killing Game[]

Prologue[]

Tsurugi would be one of the fourteen students to introduce himself to Yuki. Once everyone began to enter the school building, everyone would fall unconscious.

DRA - Prologue CG - Execution Explanation

Soon Tsurugi and the other participants would gather at the entrance hall. Suddenly, an anonymous announcement would play, directing everyone to the gym area. At arrival, Monokuma would appear as he soon announced the beginning of the killing game. Tsurugi would grow angry at the announcement, leading him to attempt to stop Monokuma by rushing onto the stage and pinning Monokuma against one of the rules. However, a gun attached to a camera would soon shoot at the area he was standing at. Fortunately, he dodged out of the way of the gunshot due to Mikako catching onto the gun and warning him.

Chapter 1[]

The first day of the killing game, Tsurugi would investigate the school with Kakeru, Mitsuhiro, and Kizuna. They would investigate the student dorm rooms, and discovered the door to second floor of the dorms was blocked by a wire mesh. Tsurugi, along with Kakeru, also discovered the dorm rooms were soundproof. A few days later, the first motive would be handed out in the form of a video. After hearing Yuki scream, he goes to the A/V room with Akane, and calms Yuki down. Although the contents of his video are unknown, Tsurugi is shocked and angry with Monokuma after watching it. During the investigations, Tsurugi would be able to discover that his and Kiyoka's nameplates were swapped on accident by Haruhiko. During the trial it would be discovered that Tsurugi was targeted to be the victim of the case, but due to the swapping of the nameplates, he was able to survive though at the cost of Kiyoka's death. This was discovered by the nameplate swap and where the note actually went to.

He is the main one to talk and give insights during the trial alongside Yuki. Right after Mitsuhiro is executed and everyone is still in shock over it, he questions why everyone else is so shocked and sad for Mitsuhiro. His personality changes drastically from this point onwards, his true ideology and intolerance towards criminals showing through, to the point he has no sympathy for Mitsuhiro's fate.

Chapter 2[]

The day after the trial and execution, Tsurugi creates a group to ensure the safety of the students, deeming anyone who doesn't join him a potential criminal whom he will have no sympathy for. Rei, Kinji and Kizuna are the only ones to not join in. The students would investigate the places that had newly opened up after breakfast, Tsurugi investigating the library alone with Kanata. During his investigation, Tsurugi, Kanata and Yuki would find a piece of paper detailing the closure of Kibōgamine Gakuen. This confuses them, as they believe they are in the school during the events of the killing game. Once back at the dining hall to corroborate their findings, Akane slaps Tsurugi due to her outrage at his dismissive and sacrificial attitude towards the students who chose not to join him. A few days later, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and give them the second motive: each other's secrets. While they aren't allowed to choose their own secret, they can choose each other's secrets. Tsurugi's secret is unknown, but he receives Kakeru's secret, which is that he was bullied a lot in elementary school. The next day, Akane mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin. Kizuna accepts.

After the second investigation began, Tsurugi would assess the state of the broken window from the outside of the switchium. After Yuki asks him, he would claim the shape, temperature and direction of the window pieces was strange as they were neatly broken. He would also give the story of the fire on the second floor. He was alerted to the second floor by Ayame's scream, and found Rei, Kinji and Ayame there. There was smoke pouring into the hall, and they extinguished the fire. Tsurugi would hear an explosion noise when he went to a corner of the power room, which was the glass of the window breaking. Because of the smoke, he could only see Rei, Ayame and Kinji, and when Tsurugi and the two girls went into the switchium, they found Kizuna's dead body, triggering the body discovery announcement. According to him, Akane and Mikako were the first ones there, then everyone else came. He then asks Yuki to confirm if Akane and Mikako were together before the announcement.

When it is revealed in the trial that Akane accidentally stabbed Kizuna in their fight in the switchium, Tsurugi's opinion of her changes. He regards of her as a criminal, and he gains a sacrificial attitude towards her as a result, even telling her to kill herself.

The day after Ayame's execution, everyone excepting Akane, Rei, Kinji and Yuki would talk amongst themselves and decide to break away from Tsurugi's authority.

Chapter 3[]

Shortly after their breakaway from Tsurugi, the students, with the exception of Akane, would investigate the areas that had newly opened up, Tsurugi investigating the science lab on the third floor. During his investigation, Yuki would find a Kibōgamine Gakuen graduation album belonging to Kisaragi Hanzo, a member of the 58th class, and the then 'Ultimate Inventor'. The pair are confused on the album, but Tsurugi points out that since they are the 79th class, Kisaragi Hanzo must be quite old by the time the killing game occurs. After investigations conclude, Mikako would call everyone to the dining hall to corroborate their findings.

When in the dining hall, the students would tell the others about what they found, Kinji in particular finding a cellphone in a drawer in one of the classrooms. Since Kinji doesn't know how to use the phone to call for help, he gives it to Kakeru, who finds that there's no signal. He then gives it to Rei, who figures out that the issue is the area, and discovers that Kiyoka was the original owner of the phone through looking at the phone background. The phone leaves the students confused, as since they are believed to be in the middle of Tokyo, there should be cellphone service, as well as wondering why only Kiyoka's phone is in the school. The phone is left in the hands of Kinji for safekeeping. Mikako would then show everyone the reason for calling them all to the dining hall, taking them to the storage room and saying she'd heard someone's voice from behind it, explaining that it was the reason she was late to the trial elevator the day before. After Kakeru and Haruhiko moved the bookshelf, the students saw a giant hole in the wall with a staircase leading down. When they go to enter, Monokuma stops them, showing them a gun attached to the ceiling that would shoot if they attempted to enter. With Monokuma guarding the entrance, the students are forced to give up, but Rei and Kanata reason that there must be something important down there.

The next day, Monokuma would call the students to the gym and present the third motive to them, a video that would show the students their desires or something they want to obtain. Unlike the first motive videos, these videos would be viewed in a soundproofed dark room, so no one other than the student viewing each video could see. The students are also told they can't say tell anyone else the contents of their video or show their reactions. The contents of Haruhiko's video are unknown, and the order the students went in is also largely unknown. Everyone was extremely uncomfortable by the time the motives ended. Shortly after Monokuma left, Akane would snap out of her shell-shocked state, screaming and running out of the gym. The others would question why she did so, with Kinji proposing it may have been due to the motive video.

That night, Tsurugi would be investigating the second floor when he is lured into the library by Kinji, who knocks him unconscious. While he is unconscious, the corpses of Kakeru and Kanata would be discovered, and he and Kinji would be taken to the infirmary to have their wounds taken care of. He would wake up extremely late in the investigation, finding Yuki on the second floor and asking if there had been a murder. Yuki would say yes and direct Tsurugi to the science lab, art room, library and infirmary. Yuki would then ask him how he passed out, and he would reply he had been knocked unconscious during his shock at seeing Kakeru's body. Tsurugi is notably surprised when Yuki tells him Kanata had died as well as Kakeru. He would barely have any time to do a precursory investigation before Monokuma would call the students to the trial elevator room, and would arrive a bit later than everyone else.

After Kinji's execution, Monokuma would randomly stop working. Mikako would notice first and urge everyone to run to the warehouse. The students would go down the stairs leading from the hole in the wall to find an empty room with a gate and unlocked door. Monokuma would soon show up and say that he had disposed of what had been down there, leaving everyone crestfallen at their hope of escaping being crushed.

Chapter 4[]

The next day, Tsurugi would investigate the school's office on the fourth floor. While there, he would talk with Yuki about the subject matter of some books he finds, being robotics, technology, physics and chemistry. Due to such subjects, he would begin to question if the students are actually in a school, or in a laboratory. When Yuki finds a picture of Yamato Kisaragi in the office, he would give it to Tsurugi for safekeeping.

Early the next day, Monokuma would call all the students to the ballroom. When they gather there, Monokuma tells them he prepared a dance party to help lift their spirits up. The students are skeptical, so Monokuma prepares a memorandum that he signs to prove his intentions. The students go into change rooms divided by sex to change into ballroom outfits, Tsurugi being the fifth one ready and out. Monokuma then tells them to form pairs in order to begin dancing, Tsurugi forming a pair with Rei due to their shared distaste at having to dance.

Music begins to play as the pairs dance, and after they are finished dancing, Monokuma leads them to a dining hall to eat. Everyone is lively and having fun until Teruya asks to save some food, and Akane asks to change her clothes, to which Monokuma denies. He then tells the students they aren't allowed to leave or change, and Tsurugi would bolt out of his seat, Rei walking after him. Yuki, Akane, Mikako and Teruya would follow Rei and Tsurugi, while Haruhiko and Satsuki would stay behind and continue to eat.

He would find the door to the ballroom is locked, and along with everyone else would go back to the dining hall to find Haruhiko and Satsuki had eaten almost all the food and explain the situation. Tsurugi in particular was extremely annoyed at their gluttony, but then begins to investigate the ballroom. Tsurugi investigates a large empty room devoid of anything but carpet, finding it suspicious there would be such a room. When talking with Yuki, Tsurugi says he will only investigate for himself and not communicate with the others, even Yuki, and angrily tells him to leave.

Monokuma would then call them all to the dance hall to distribute keys to the dorm rooms to each student. He would also announce the fourth motive, which is the ballroom itself, making it impossible to leave unless killing someone. Monokuma also tells them that they aren't permitted suicide, and that the reason for getting rid of their clothes was to prevent them from unlocking the door using their student handbooks. They are also told that all rules except the vandalism and violence against Monokuma rules are void while in the ballroom, there is no set 'night time' and the morning and night broadcasts will change.

Tsurugi would leave early, and Monokuma would sound the nighttime broadcast, though they don't have to sleep or stay in their rooms. He would then spend the night investigating the ballroom further. Two days later, the food supply had exhausted more than it should have, so Yuki would talk with Tsurugi, believing him to be the reason. Tsurugi simply tells him that he'd been only eating one meal a day, then go back to investigating.

On the seventh day, Tsurugi would camp at the arsenal to prevent anyone from taking any weapons from it due to the fights between Haruhiko and Teruya the day before. On the ninth day, he would encounter Yuki, who in an extremely hungry state, would run at the gun displays to take one. Tsurugi would hold him back and punch him, snapping Yuki out of the hunger haze. After he does, Yuki would call everyone in the group to the dining hall, where Tsurugi would talk in and give everyone a gun to commit mass suicide. Haruhiko and Yuki attempt to stop him, but Tsurugi throws them into the side of the fridge. Yuki attempts to calm Tsurugi down, and Tsurugi goes to tackle him but trips on a bit of the carpet. The others tie him up, gag him and leave him in his room.

Two days later, Yuki and Teruya would find Haruhiko's dead body in the arsenal, alerting Rei and the others to the scene and triggering the body discovery announcement. Monokuma immediately gives them all food to recover their stamina in order to investigate, and gives them their normal clothes and student handbooks back. Tsurugi would stop eating and begin investigating earlier than the others.

Tsurugi would investigate the arsenal and take Haruhiko's key card to get to his room. Yuki would ask him about the circumstances of Haruhiko's death. He would reply that it's unlikely Haruhiko had died immediately due to the placement of the wound and that the bullet wasn't stuck in Haruhiko's body, meaning he could move around before dying. He also says that if the bullet was stuck in Haruhiko's body, the resulting kinetic energy would damage the surrounding areas of the body. Due to this, it was likely the bullet made a hole in Haruhiko's lung, and would have died shortly after being shot. After explaining this to Yuki, he would leave the arsenal to investigate Haruhiko's room. Inside his room, Tsurugi and Yuki would find a note asking Haruhiko to come to the arsenal as the sender had something to tell him. After deducing the killer must've written the letter, Tsurugi would wonder why Haruhiko would go to the arsenal after seeing the note.

Upon being confronted with the knowledge during the trial that Haruhiko masterminded his own death and planned to save only Satsuki, his killer, Tsurugi faints and is taken to his room by Monokuma.

After Satsuki's execution, everyone besides Rei would go to his room to check on his wellbeing. However, he would not respond.

Chapter 5[]

Tsurugi would remain in his room for the first 3 days. On the afternoon of the third day, Yuki would see him exiting the ballroom, and wouldn't respond when Yuki called out to him.

Tsurugi would write notes addressed to each of the other students, telling them to come to the gym with everyone else. When they arrive, he explains that he had been reflecting on his ideologies and was guilty about being unable to properly protect the other students. Due to this guilt, he shoots himself in the forehead despite everyone pleading with him not to. The bullet he uses is defective, however, and only shatters his skull rather than penetrating his brain. As a result, he survives with Monokuma's surgery on him, but he is assumed to live as a vegetable.

Tsurugi would miraculously wake up during the trial, and would enter the trial room shortly after a building-wide power outage occurs. He would ask about Yamato and Mikako, then upon finding out they're dead, gather Rei, Yuki and Teruya, telling them he remembered everything and came to save them. He proclaims Akane is the mastermind and calls her the 'Ultimate Despair'. Upon hearing those words, Akane goes into a state of extreme pain in her head, eventually taking off her apron, choker, hair ribbons and bonnet. She introduces herself as the 'Ultimate Despair' as the spare power turns on. While she says that disposing of them would be easy, she still had to meet with someone, so she'd let them through to the final stage.

Chapter 0[]

When Yuki walks up to him to talk, Tsurugi first asks him if there's anything wrong. He had been trying to contact Yamato before talking with Yuki, wanting him to come back and play chess with him because he'd like to win a match. He would remark it's rare for Yuki to talk with the others, and asks if Yuki hates their classmates. He says he likes their classmates as he had changed since meeting them, and desires to spend time and have fun with them even as they get older. He says Yuki's eyes look sad, and their conversation ends.

When everyone gathers in the dining hall the day after the trial, Tsurugi would ask the others to hit him as atonement for his earlier actions, Rei hitting him first, Yuki second, Teruya last. Tsurugi would then tell them memories of their school life, allowing Rei, Yuki and Teruya to find out Yamato was also one of their classmates. He would then explain some of the students had different personalities, like Mikako, who was loud and cheerful, and Akane who was more respectful, during school.

He then begins to mention Junko Enoshima and The Most Desperate Event in Human History, but Akane would show up and ban him from saying anything he knows. She unlocks the locked places in the school and tells them to investigate as there will be a final class trial where she will ask them the truth behind their situation. If they get it right, they can leave, get it wrong or can't answer, she'll execute them.

The students would then begin investigating.

Chapter 6[]

Tsurugi finds Yuki on the second floor of the dormitory before they can investigate it. He says that Yuki was another person with a different personality between their school life and the killing game, being cold and cut off when dealing with the others. This leads him to ask if Yuki was really Yuki Maeda, to which Yuki would say yes and that his current personality was real. Yuki would question if Tsurugi was allowed to tell him this due to his ban, but Akane would pop in and allow it. Tsurugi would leave.

Tsurugi is also found in the headmaster's office reading the student profiles of the 79th class. When Yuki finds him, he hands the files to Yuki as a way to remember important information, then leaves to investigate. Tsurugi would later meet up with the others in the entrance hall for the trial after being called there by Monokuma.

During the trial, they would realise there's another mastermind besides Akane. In order to get them to remember, Akane would ask the others their origins. Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya would do so, but Yuki is unable, prompting the others to discover he's the other mastermind. This would trigger a flashback of Utsuro's memories.

After the flashbacks end, Yuki would find himself in a realm of his own subconscious. An unseen figure would tell to choose between two doors, a white one and a red one.

Hope/Bad Ending[]

If Yuki chooses the white door, he remains Yuki Maeda, but regains his memories and actions he did as Utsuro. He would implore the others to punish him as they saw fit once they escaped, but Akane would allow a Monokuma to impale him on its paw, killing him.

Despair/True Ending[]

If Yuki chooses the red door, he is never to be seen again, Utsuro waking up and assuming the body. He would introduce himself, and Tsurugi would confirm that's what Yuki was like during school. Utsuro would resolve to end the killing game by killing Rei, Tsurugi and Teruya, but the trio refuse to give up hope, Utsuro responding by sending them into despair.

He would tell Tsurugi that the reason for the anarchy and disorder in Japan was Tsurugi's own father, Juu Kinjo. Juu, upon being overcome with despair due to Tsurugi's death, would use his influence among police to infect them with despair. Utsuro would also say that in his despair, Juu had eaten the remains of the corpse of Tsurugi's childhood friend, Sasaki Kouhei. With that, Tsurugi would be sent into despair.

When an Alter Ego of Yamato overwrites the monitor Monokuma was using to oversee the trial, he and Rei would encourage Tsurugi to 'explode his emotions' to wake himself up from despair. When Tsurugi wakes up, he gathers Rei and Teruya and the trio gather behind Utsuro. After a Monokuma attempts to attack Rei, slashing Akane in the process, the self-destruct sequence would be initiated, and Rei, Tsurugi and Teruya would escape the collapsing building via a helicopter. While on the helicopter, Tsurugi would invite the other two to join him in starting an organisation to eradicate the evil in the world.

Chapter EX[]

In the non-canonical ending of Danganronpa EX, Tsurugi along with everyone par Yuki and Akane would escape the Killing Game.

Creating the Kisaragi Foundation[]

After surviving the Kibōgamine Gakuen Killing Game, along with fellow survivors Rei and Teruya, Tsurugi would create the Kisaragi Foundation, a foundation that had worked on capturing remnants of despair, rescuing any survivors they could find, as well as searching for Mikado.
