Appearance[]

Yamato is a male of average height, who's shown to have dark blue hair, going no further than his chin in length, usually hidden by a hat. Yamato has violet eyes.
Yamato wears a white hat with a golden outlining on the brim, two gold buttons near the transitioning area, and the Kisaragi Foundation logo on the front.
He wears a long flowing lab coat with a blue interior that reaches to his calves. It has two golden shoulder pads with additional gold chains, also having a blue and red triangle on the left chest pocket. He wears a medium grey shirt underneath this, with a black tie atop of it. He additionally wears a pair of white trousers with two pockets, and a pair of white shoes with grey laces.

In his childhood, it's shown through a family photo that Yamato used to wear a white t-shirt of sorts, having blue outlines going along the sleeves and collar. A side pocket on the right side of his chest is shown to also have blue outlines going along it. It's shown that he still has the same dark blue hair in his childhood, though having the fringe moved to the right side of his face.
Name Etymology[]
Yamato's given name is possibly based on the ancient province of the same name corresponding to modern-day Nara Prefecture in Japan.
In Japanese, Yamato's first name uses the kanji 大 meaning "large", and 和 meaning "peace" or "harmony". His last name, Kisaragi, is written by using the kanji 如 meaning "likeness" or "equal", and 月 meaning "moon" or "month".
His surname also references his birthday: February 11. Kisaragi (如月) is the obsolete term for the second month of the lunar calendar, which is February. 如 means "equal" or "similar", which may refer to two 1's in his birth date, and when these numbers are added, it will result to two, making two 2's that not only matches the second month February, but also makes the two numbers alike (2-2).
Personality[]
Yamato is a very optimistic, cheerful, and passionate young man with a strong personality, and is always willing to help others in need. He enjoys building relationships and is extremely friendly, as shown in his attempts to befriend the more distant Yuki. He is shown to be highly intelligent along with having advanced academic skills. Tsurugi, who regularly plays chess with Yamato, comments on how the inventor is strategic enough to win against him every round. He also has a knack for computer science and technology, and his creativity only further proves his ability as the Ultimate Inventor. Despite this, Yamato is normally viewed as a dunce by his other classmates, because of his tendency to make poor decisions and childish behavior.
Before the killing game, Yamato created an invention that preserves his memories in case of getting brainwashed. However, the side effects caused a deformity in his brain, causing him to talk in a very strange way, as seen throughout the events of Chapter 5. When the Tragedy struck, it is shown that Yamato has great charisma and leadership skills. He ends up safely escorting his classmates to the Kisaragi Foundation Research Facility, until they get attacked by Monokumas.
History[]
Early Life[]
Before the game, Yamato was born into a wealthy family and raised by a single father, Hanzo Kisaragi, who had him, and adopted Mikako into their family. When he was younger, Yamato would often squabble and pick on Mikako, but eventually stopped doing so. Mikako grew an interest in exorcisms at some point while Yamato followed in his family's footsteps to become an inventor. Yamato and Mikako's childhoods were apparently very good, but once they attended Kibōgamine Gakuen, tragedy struck with the passing of their father.
Killing Game[]
Chapter 5[]
Weeks after the initial start of the Kibōgamine Gakuen killing game, Monokuma would reveal the secret and hidden sixteenth student as the new motive, Yamato Kisaragi, which would spread both shock and confusion through the others. He would introduce himself in a joking manner, posing cutely and calling himself an idol before asking to not let him die. Monokuma tells the other students that Yamato has an abnormality in his brain that causes him to act strangely, and also says that he was introduced late due to 'circumstances'. He remains largely unresponsive to the reactions of the others, not moving even when Mikako begins bleeding from her eyes, nose and ears. Monokuma would give him his handbook before disappearing.
Later that day, Yuki would find Yamato in the dormitory area when going to investigate. Yamato looks at him angrily and attempts to speak, but is only able to grunt before running off. Later that same day, Yamato would be approached by Mikako, who would attempt to speak with him. She asks him how he came to be the way he is and tells him he was in a faraway place for the entire killing game up until he was introduced. Yamato was unable to properly respond, and Mikako runs away due to her headaches.
In the morning of the fourth day, Rei would try to talk to Yamato to try and get information from him. He would instead ask where Mikako was, and after Yuki tells him she was on the fifth floor investigating, Yamato runs out of the dining hall after her.
After finding her in the first-floor lab, the pair would be paralysed by Monokuma, and he would have his chest blown open by a detonator he had Mikako install in case their mission failed, which Monokuma set off.
He would be found dead minutes later lying on his back with a wound on his chest in the records room on the first floor of the laboratory/fifth floor of the presumed Kibōgamine Gakuen, Mikako standing over him holding a knife.
Chapter 0[]
Yamato wouldn't be present at school due to attending Hanzo's funeral, having been away from school for two weeks.
Chapter 6[]
It is revealed he was actually killed by Monokuma, who activated a detonator controlled by an external signal that blew up his chest, killing him in front of Mikako. It is also revealed through notes Yuki finds in the headmaster's office that he knew of the incidents occurring at Kibōgamine Gakuen, eventually tracing it back to Junko Enoshima, the Ultimate Despair. When the Tragedy struck, he managed to save the 79th class by taking them to a Kisaragi Foundation Laboratory on an island, though this plan would fail as Akane had joined them as an undercover Ultimate Despair.
In a flashback of Utsuro's memories, Yamato would first introduce himself to Utsuro before getting escorted away by Mikako. The flashback would then cut to Utsuro spying on Yamato as he hears about the death of a council member, then witnesses an argument between Yamato and Mikako because he wouldn't tell anyone about his troubles. On the day the tragedy broke out, Yamato would stop a Monokuma from killing Mikako by shooting it with a gun before getting everyone on a utility truck to escape the city. During the ride, Monokumas would chase the truck, prompting Yamato to come outside with a gun, giving it to Kiyoka to kill the Monokumas. On the day the Monokumas attacked the Kisaragi Foundation, Yamato would hide in the record room with Mikako, the duo asking Akane and Utsuro to change their minds about the killing game. The pair would refuse, capturing Yamato.
After the flashbacks end, Yuki would find himself in a realm of his subconscious. An unseen figure would tell him to choose between two doors.
Despair/True Ending[]
If Yuki chooses the red door, he would disappear and Utsuro would assume control. Near the end of the trial, an Alter Ego of him appears on the computer screen originally made to show Monokuma. Using his words, he talks Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya into ending the killing game rather than succumbing to despair, which they successfully do. His Alter Ego would help them find the escape hatch before shutting down as they escape.
Talent & Abilities[]
Inventor[]
Yamato Kisaragi is an expert when it comes to inventing. Some people's talents, like Akane and Ayame's, come in handy while helping others in the Killing Game, but his doesn't.
