Name Etymology[]
Yuki's first name is written using the kanji 勇 (yū), which means "courage", and 氣 (ki), meaning "spirit" or "mind". His last name, Maeda, is a common surname used in Japan, which roughly means "front rice paddy".
Appearance[]

Yuki is a young man on the shorter side who has tanned skin, short bright orange-red hair and pale brown eyes. His hair is parted to one side and is generally quite neat, although parts of it stick out in soft curls. In contrast to this, his real identity Utsuro appears to have much messier and curlier hair and paler skin, giving off a dishevelled and tired appearance.
During his time at Hopes Peak Academy, Yuki wears a white long-sleeved shirt which he does not tuck into his trousers and a pale orange sleeveless vest over a bright red tie. He also wears light grey trousers and brown school shoes. At the end of the game when his true identity is revealed, he rolls up his sleeves to mid-arm length in addition to taking off his tie and letting it hang loosely around his neck.
During the party in Chapter 4, he alters his appearance slightly, not unlike the rest of the surviving cast, making himself appear more formal. He appears with his red hair being neater, which is combed out to have less hairs sticking off of it. He changes his vest and tie for a white blazer with orange buttons, a white shirt with an upright collar and a bright red bow-tie.
Personality[]
As a high school student who was only picked by a lottery to enter Hopes Peak Academy, Yuki does not possess any special characteristics, seeing himself as "ordinary" and "average". Nonetheless, he strives to do his best every day and wants to befriend his classmates in any way he can. However, this persona was a result of his memories being altered.
The real identity of Yuki Maeda is Utsuro, someone in despair who lost interest in life, and finds most things boring. He speaks in a rather blunt and harsh manner. It's implied that he has a more decent side, as he spends a significant time wandering and using his luck to help others, but it was just to pass the time. This could be explained by the fact that Utsuro means "empty" or "abandoned" in Japanese.
History[]
Early Life[]
Utsuro grew up happy in a good family. It is described that as soon as he was born, illnesses were cured around where he lived. However, his parents eventually found out about his luck abilities, and began to use him like a charm to fill their greedy needs. After realizing this, he became miserable. He learned to control his luck, but his power wasn't well-rounded; he could use his powers to get anything, but the "process" of doing that didn't exist. For example, he could ace a math exam without actually learning mathematics. If he thinks he wants to study machines, he becomes well acquainted with machines. Whatever he thought, it was just done, with no sense of accomplishment or satisfaction. Because of this, he became bored with the world, and ran away from home. He was able to live by himself on the streets thanks to his ability, and on his journeys, started helping many people in need, including Akane Taira and members of Void. However, this was not because he was a good person; it was just because it was a "good deed" to do, and he eventually got bored of doing that as well. As everything went as he wanted, he no longer became interested in anything. He attempted suicide multiple times, but failed again and again thanks to his ability. At some point, Utsuro met Junko Enoshima, and she made him feel something for the first time in forever: despair. He began following in her footsteps, orchestrating class 79's killing game with Akane in preparation for class 78's killing game at her request.
To infiltrate Kibōgamine Gakuen, Utsuro kidnapped and took on the identity of Yuki Maeda. To blend in with everyone else, his memories were altered at the beginning of the killing game.
Killing Game[]
Prologue[]
After reading up on his classmates, Yuki would head to Kibōgamine Gakuen to meet the other Ultimate's in his class, leading him into the Entrance Hall where he'd find them all gathered. After talking some, Akane would suggest that they all introduce themselves to each other, which was agreed on between most of the students, leading for Yuki to talk to them one by one, while the ones not in line did so between each other. After introductions concluded, the students would begin to head into the main school building. Taking a step forwards, however, would begin to blur the vision for the students, leading for them all to fall unconscious.
At an unknown amount of time afterwards, the students would begin to wake up once again, finding themselves situated in empty classrooms. They would all begin to regroup at the entrance hall to discuss the events that had just taken place. Soon an anonymous announcement would begin to play, which instead directed the students to the Gym. Arriving there, they would be met with Monokuma, who would announce the beginning of the Killing School Life.
Chapter 1[]
On the first day of the killing game, Yuki would be called to the dining hall by Ayame Hatano to present all the information they'd gathered from investigating the school, including the layout, lack of exits, and rules they had to follow. After hearing what everyone had to say, they all adjourned to get some sleep. The next day, Yuki walks out of his room to hear Akane telling someone to "go away". He would head in that direction to find Mitsuhiro Higa harassing her. Mitsuhiro would then run off, and Akane would tell Yuki that he had come up to her and asked for "physical affection". The two then went to the antique shop to investigate, getting an antique teacup from the Monomono machine.
A few days later, the first motive is handed out in the form of a video, with Yuki going into the A/V room alone to investigate it. He finds a DVD with his name on it and plays it, only to see his home being smashed to rubble and his mother, Aiko Maeda, in grave danger. He screams out of terror, alerting the other students, with Akane and Tsurugi Kinjo arriving there first. He watches as his classmates watch their own videos, and grows distrustful of them due to the motive. Shortly after he leaves the A/V room, he would hear a crashing noise, prompting him to find Kiyoka Maki, Satsuki Iranami, and Haruhiko Kobashikawa goofing off in the dormitory hall, two of the nameplates smashed on the ground. The trio explain that Haruhiko and Satsuki had bumped into each other, causing Haruhiko to crash into the nameplates and send them to the ground. Yuki is a bystander for Haruhiko's confrontation with Monokuma due to the rule he broke, and after Monokuma leaves, Kiyoka tells him "If we play together to forget sadness and hardships, you will forget about murder." Yuki gets a little hope from her words.
The next day, neither Kiyoka nor Rei Mekaru can be found by anyone. When they all go to look for them, Yuki and Ayame are alerted to the girls bathroom by Akane screaming. Once there, they see Kiyoka's dead body hanging by a rope attached to a pipe in the bathroom, and the body discovery announcement plays.
During the investigation, Yuki would first read the Monokuma File to get the time and cause of death, but he was skeptical about its validity. He would go to Kanata Inori, who would verify the Monokuma file was true, but question why she was hanged if he wasn't strangled. Mikako Kurokawa tells him that the rope and hook hanging Kiyoka is strange, as it can't be tied the way it was from the inside. He would spot a stinky yellow liquid on the far wall, which Kinji tells him smells similar to rubber, and that it's facing towards Kiyoka's body. There was also a bloodstain on the floor near Kiyoka's body, yet the only blood on her was around the wound on her head. He would find a note in Kiyoka's hand. Though it was torn, he was able to read that Kiyoka had been asked to come to the laundry room at 6.
Yuki would then leave the girl's bathroom and find Tsurugi shortly after, who had discovered that his and Kiyoka's nameplates were switched around. Yuki would then speak with Haruhiko, who had switched the nameplates around by accident after he had forgotten where they originally were. He would then inquire Rei about why she was late, to which she'd say there was something of interest she was investigating, and to go to Kakeru Yamaguchi to prove her innocence. Yuki would do so, and find Kakeru in the incinerator room. Kakeru would prove Rei's innocence by saying he saw her at the time of Kiyoka's death, as well as direct Yuki to a bloodstained hammer and burst rubber ball.
Yuki would go to the laundry room after that, finding a bloodstain near the entrance. He'd then go to the antique shop, only to find it looked the same. He'd go to Teruya Ōtori to verify, and he'd say that he'd memorised the layout of the antique shop. He said the layout looked slightly different, as well as that the storage room didn't have any ropes or hooks in it, allowing Yuki to deduce the tools had come from the antique shop.
Yuki, alongside Tsurugi, would talk the most in the trial, ultimately deducing Mitsuhiro as Kiyoka's killer.
Chapter 2[]
After Mitsuhiro's execution, Tsurugi creates a group to ensure the safety of the students. Everyone, including Yuki, joins, with the exception of Rei, Kizuna Tomori, and Kinji Uehara. After breakfast ends, Yuki, along with the others, would investigate the newly opened areas of the school, including the bathhouse and the second floor. During his investigation in the library with Kanata and Tsurugi, Yuki would find a paper written by a secretary at Kibōgamine Gakuen detailing that it had closed down. This confuses them, as they believe they are in the school during the events of the killing game. When he is investigating the power room with Rei, Monokuma tells them that the reason the power room exists is due to the school being unable to receive power and electricity from outside. This confuses Yuki, as the school is in the middle of the city and should be able to receive power. The next day, Monokuma would call them all to the gym and give them the second motive: each other's secrets. While they aren't allowed to choose their own secret, they can choose each other's secret. Yuki receives Mikako's secret, which is that she might be talkative, and although who receives his secret is unknown, Kizuna would find it, which is that he knows the mastermind. Later that day, Kizuna is found crying by Akane and Yuki. The next day, Akane mentions seeing Kizuna crying during breakfast, so the students in Tsurugi's group go to the gym to invite her to rejoin, so Kizuna accepted.
Later the same day, the body discovery announcement would play, alerting the students to the switchium in the power room. Using flashlights, they would see Kizuna's dead body inside. Monokuma would show up shortly after everyone had gathered at the switchium, and deliver the second Monokuma File. Yuki would check the Monokuma File first, detailing Kizuna's death as occurring at around 9:30pm, the cause of death being a cut through the esophagus with a knife, her body also having a wound on her stomach. Due to the time of the murder, he'd conclude that the students who were in their rooms at the time of the body discovery announcement had an alibi, as it would've taken too long to murder and clean up before the night announcement rang. Yuki would then investigate strange marks on the floor written in blood. It appeared to look like 3 'X's and a bigger 'X' after them, which Kanata would point out to be a dying message left by Kizuna. He would then go to the window on the far wall of the switchium that had a fuse running across it that was cut with a knife, he'd investigate the broken window as well, which he'd first think was used as an escape, but question the reason for doing so when the hallway exit was viable. He would relate this to be the cause of a fire that occurred inside the switchium. He'd also notice broken flashlights on the floor, as well as a bloodstain near the entrance of the switchium, leading Yuki to question if a struggle had occurred near the entrance, as well as the culprit's escape route. He'd go to a corner at the very back of the switchium and find a piece of burned white cloth stained with blood. He'd also find a small lighter and a note he'd discover to be his secret, but at the time it'd be too burned to be readable.
Yuki would investigate Kizuna's body. Looking at her wound, he saw the knife was a kitchen knife, as well as question the reason why her stomach had been stabbed when the fatal wound was the one in her neck. He'd confirm with Kanata about the state of Kizuna's body, and she'd question the abnormal amount of blood loss Kizuna had experienced. She would also say that if someone's blood pressure is high, blood wouldn't clot normally, meaning that Kizuna's death would have taken a while, and confirm the time of death in the file to be true. Yuki would then leave the switchium.
After leaving the switchium, he would find Ayame at the entrance looking at the left corner next to it. There's charcoal in the corner, and she comments on the weirdness of it since it wasn't there when they had all gathered. Yuki would watch as she fell to the ground when going to check, and as her leg started bleeding. Yuki would discover a hidden wire used as a trap. After Kanata took Ayame away to check her vitals, Yuki would find the charcoal was actually a burnt flashlight.
Yuki would then talk with the people who weren't at the dormitory area. He went to Akane, who said she was in the kitchen cooking, then went to the bathroom to wash her clothes after a cooking mishap. She would also mention Ayame was training because she was in the training room. He would talk with Teruya, who would say that there were things missing from the antique shop again, including the fuse, the lighter, and the flashlights. He would also say that the objects were taken the night before, when everyone except Rei, Kinji and Kizuna were all together. Teruya would additionally say that although there were wires at the antique shop, they hadn't been taken at the time he checked.
Finally, Yuki would go to Tsurugi, who was investigating the pieces of broken glass from the other side of the switchium window. He would determine that the direction, shape, and temperature of the pieces was strange, being neatly broken. Tsurugi would also give the story of the fire on the second floor. He was alerted to the second floor by Ayame's scream, and found Rei, Kinji and Ayame there. There was smoke pouring into the hallway, and they extinguished the fire. Tsurugi would hear an explosion noise when he went to a corner of the power room, which was the broken glass. Because of the smoke, he would only see Rei, Ayame and Kinji, and when Tsurugi and the two girls went into the switchium, they found Kizuna's dead body, which triggered the body discovery announcement. According to Tsurugi, Akane and Mikako were the first ones there, then everyone else. He then asks Yuki to confirm if Akane and Mikako were together before the announcement, which he isn't able to do due to Monokuma calling them all to start the trial.
Yuki would exit the power room to find Kanata and Ayame, who tell him that the tendon in Ayame's left leg had been cut, leaving her unable to walk.
The day after Ayame's execution, everyone excepting Akane, Tsurugi, Yuki, Rei and Kinji would talk amongst themselves and decide to break away from Tsurugi's authority. They'd also elect to avoid Yuki due to his secret. When they tell Yuki this, Monokuma tells them that he planted an 'imposter' early in the game, even before Kiyoka died. Everyone assumes it to be Yuki, and they promptly kick him out of their group.
Man's Romance[]
This is a small scene unlocked if you have the Man's Romance (or A Man's Fantasy) present in your possession by the beginning of Chapter 2.
While Yuki is investigating the bathhouse, Haruhiko walks up to him after he overhears Akane organising a communal bath for the girls while talking with Yuki. He would then ask Yuki if he wants to spy on the girls bathing with him. If you don't have the present in your possession, Yuki disagrees, but if you do, Yuki agrees. The pair wait in the bathhouse entrance until they overhear the girls walking in, then spy on them bathing through the doors to the bathhouse.
Chapter 3[]
After Yuki is expelled from their group, Yuki goes to Akane's room to check on her. Due to her grief over Ayame's death, she only tells him to leave her alone. Yuki comforts her as best as he can from outside, then, like the other students excepting Akane, investigates the areas that had newly opened up. During his investigation of the science lab with Tsurugi, Yuki would find a Kibōgamine Gakuen graduation album belonging to Hanzo Kisaragi, a member of the 58th class, and the then 'Ultimate Inventor'. The pair are confused on the album, but Tsurugi points out that because they are the 79th class, Kisaragi Hanzo must be quite old by the time the killing game occurs. When Yuki is investigating the art room, he finds a photo on the floor showing his classmates and himself posing and smiling, with a human-sized rip in the photo. Yuki is confused at the photo's contents, as he is under the impression none of them had met before the killing game, and couldn't remember posing for it. Rei spots him and goes to take a look at the photo, but Monokuma takes it before she is able to. Yuki tells her about the photo and that there is an imposter amongst the students, Rei becoming confused yet intrigued over the news. While investigating in the casino, he is invited to play a few games of poker by Haruhiko and Satsuki, Haruhiko becoming indignant at his win with four kings and Satsuki not being surprised as Yuki is the Ultimate Lucky Student. After investigations conclude, Mikako would call everyone to the dining hall to corroborate their findings.
When in the dining hall, the students would tell the others about what they found, Kinji in particular finding a cellphone in a drawer in one of the classrooms. Since Kinji doesn't know how to use the phone to call for help, he gives it to Kakeru, who finds that there's no signal. He then gives it to Rei, who figures out that the issue is the area, and discovers that Kiyoka was the original owner of the phone through looking at the phone background. The phone leaves the students confused, as since they are believed to be in the middle of Tokyo, there should be cellphone service, as well as wondering why only Kiyoka's phone is in the school. The phone is left in the hands of Kinji for safekeeping. Mikako would then show everyone the reason for calling them all to the dining hall, taking them to the storage room and saying she'd heard someone's voice from behind it, explaining that it was the reason she was late to the trial elevator the day before. After Kakeru and Haruhiko moved the bookshelf, the students saw a giant hole in the wall with a staircase leading down. When they go to enter, Monokuma stops them, showing them a gun attached to the ceiling that would shoot if they attempted to enter. With Monokuma guarding the entrance, the students are forced to give up, but Rei and Kanata reason that there must be something important down there.
The next morning, Akane would join the group for breakfast, though she would be in her shell-shocked state and unresponsive. Due to Satsuki's words of trusting Yuki, he would be reinstated into their group.
Later the same day, Yuki would find Mikako in the hall of the dormitory floor. He would ask what she's doing, and she would respond cryptically, saying she was looking at the ceiling, then tell Yuki to go to bed.
The next day, Monokuma would call the students to the gym and present the third motive to them, a video that would show the students their desires or something they want to obtain. Unlike the first motive videos, these videos would be viewed in a soundproofed dark room, so no one other than the student viewing each video could see it. They are also told they can't say tell anyone else the contents of their video or show their reactions. Yuki would be the first one to view a video. Yuki's video was porn, in particular of a woman's face whom he didn't recognise. He is confused and uncomfortable at the video, and at Monokuma's taunts at what appears to be his greatest desire. After he walks out, he finds it difficult to look at the girl's faces due to the video.
The order of who watched their video is largely unknown, but Yuki went in first and Mikako went in last. Everyone was extremely uncomfortable by the time the motives ended. Rei would then ask Monokuma who Hanzo Kisaragi was, to which Monokuma wouldn't answer. Shortly after Monokuma left, Akane would snap out of her shell-shocked state, screaming and running out of the gym. The others would question why she did so, with Kinji proposing it may have been due to the motive video. The students excepting Rei, Mikako and Kinji would go to find Akane, eventually finding her in her dorm room. Monokuma would then sound the nighttime announcement, prompting everyone to stop and go to bed.
The next day at breakfast, Teruya would become angry at their lack of progress, especially since they had found a secret staircase but were unable to go down it. He would also mention that Rei, Kinji and Tsurugi were all looking for ways to escape, yet they were doing nothing. Haruhiko also begins to raise his voice at Teruya, saying that he wasn't the only one scared of what would happen. When Teruya taunts Haruhiko to murder him and get executed, Haruhiko runs up to him, and tensions continue to rise as Teruya voices his helplessness at the situation. Kakeru runs up in between them and gets them to stop fighting and reconcile.
Later that day, Yuki would encounter Mikako and ask her about her secret from the second motive, asking her if it was a lie. She was unable to say anything besides "yes", as her head hurt when she tried. On their way back to the dorms to rest, they would hear a scream near the dorm rooms and go to investigate. They would find Haruhiko, Satsuki and Teruya surrounding a bloodied Akane, who had attempted to kill herself. Akane had done such a thing to join Ayame due to the contents of her motive video. Mikako would calm Akane down, but she attempts to say that Akane is "so much more", which prompts her to collapse from a headache.
The next day, Yuki, Satsuki, Haruhiko, Teruya and Akane would congregate in the dining hall for breakfast, Akane being back to her bright, normal self. The group soon become confused at Kakeru's and Kanata's absences, and when Mikako comes in late, they worriedly begin looking for the pair. Teruya searches the first, floor, being seen near the entrance to the dorm floor, and Satsuki is found near the staircase leading to the second floor, saying she heard a scream coming from there. Yuki heads to the second floor to find Akane, Mikako and Haruhiko surrounding an unconscious Kinji with a bloody head. Satsuki and Teruya run in after Yuki does, and Kinji wakes up shortly after. Kinji is confused at the scene, saying he remembered going to the library at night, then feeling a pain in his head, but can't remember anything after that. They all then hear a banging noise coming from the third floor, electing to split into two groups to investigate the two floors. Yuki, along with Mikako and Kinji, opt to search the third floor.
Yuki would go to the art room, and finds the source of the banging noise coming from a locker. He opens the locker to find a tied-up and gagged Rei inside it, its interior and Rei covered in blood from a bloodstained cloth. He would untie Rei, who would then immediately ask to see his hand for a reason then unknown. Yuki then fills her in on the situation of the missing people, and they leave the room to investigate.
They are then alerted by someone screaming, and Mikako runs to them from the science lab, telling them she needs help. Once there, they find Kinji, who tells them the door won't open. After an attempt at pushing it open, they hear a scream and flowing water from inside the science lab. Rei uses her elbow to break the window in the door, managing to get the door open. Water immediately floods into the hallway, and Rei urgently tells everyone not to touch the water. When they all look into the science lab from a distance, they find Kanata's burned, tied-up body on the floor, triggering the body discovery announcement.
A second body discovery announcement would then sound, leaving the four confused until Mikako runs to the second floor. Yuki finds Akane and Teruya outside the library, where the floor of the entrance is soaked with blood. He opens the library door to be met with Kakeru's corpse lying face down on the floor. Yuki would go silent and come to Akane yelling at him a few moments later, Rei investigating Kakeru's body and the others taking care of Kinji and Tsurugi's wounds in the infirmary. Akane then tells Yuki that she had gone to the library and found Kakeru's corpse, and also Tsurugi's body unconscious on the floor. Because of the body discovery announcement ringing twice, she thought Tsurugi was also dead, but then heard it was for Kanata. Everyone excepting Tsurugi then walks into the library. Monokuma shows up shortly after to give the students the Monokuma file 3-1 for Kakeru, and 3-2 for Kanata. Rei inquires if the order of the files means anything about the order of death, but Monokuma tells them it's because everyone is gathered at Kakeru's crime scene, so his is number 1. Everyone is concerned about the prospect of a serial killer, so Monokuma implements the rules that no student can kill more than two people, and no one can kill after an investigation has started. Due to Monokuma's words, Rei deduces Kakeru and Kanata were killed by the same person.
Monokuma would then leave, and Rei goes to investigate the science lab while Yuki investigates the library. He would first check the Monokuma File 3-1 to find that Kakeru's neck was cut from the back to the uvula at 8:40, so he was killed after Yuki, Mikako, Kinji and Rei had found Kanata's body. He would think someone on the second floor pretended to find Kakeru's body after killing him. Yuki would investigate Kakeru's body, confirming the Monokuma File to be true. He notes the wound was cut with a smooth blade, but also finds that the wound wasn't bleeding like it would have been if it was recent. Blood had smeared from the library door to Kakeru's body, the sheer amount of blood not making sense due to the short timing and nature of the injury. He would also check under Kakeru's body and find a large puddle of blood, which wouldn't make sense if he was dragged in as the smear suggests. He would also investigate a blood spot far away from Kakeru's body, but Haruhiko would tell him the blood spot was where Tsurugi had fallen unconscious.
Yuki would then exit the library and find Akane in the hall to ask her questions. She tells him that the people on the second floor had found the body and started preliminary investigation. She also tells him that she went by the science lab to find scissors to kill herself with the night before, but had found the door locked. Yuki might also talk with Kinji, who would tell him Kiyoka's phone had gone missing since he fainted, speculating the killer must've taken it.
Yuki would then go up to the third floor to investigate Kanata's murder scene, only to find water had flooded the entire hallway. He would initially be cautious of the water, but Rei would show up and tell him the water was now safe. He would enter the science lab and check the Monokuma File 3-2. It details Kanata had died at 8:35 of an electric shock that burned through her organs. From the times, he would think Kanata died before Kakeru, confusing him, as during that time everyone was running between floors. He would find a wooden plank near the door, finding it to be what was wedged in the door to prevent it from opening. He would also find Kiyoka's phone and a stun gun attached to it on top of one of the tables. The phone wasn't in working condition, but had an alarm set to 8:30. Yuki would figure out the stun gun was used as the murder weapon due to type of death being an electric shock, but would question why it was attached to the phone. Yuki would also turn off the water faucet on the table.
He would investigate her body, seeing that her clothes and skin were burnt, her body tied with box tape and her hands tied with rope above her head, attaching her to the table closest to the door. He would recall seeing box tape and rope in the art room. When he asks Rei why she had him show his hand to her upon leaving the locker earlier, she wouldn't tell him, only saying it was an insurance and a final trump card to be used against the killer.
Yuki would then go to the art room, finding Kanata's doctor's coat covered in blood in a garbage bin. Due to the blood being dry, it had been there for some time. There was also a piece of bloodstained tarp in the bin with a small round hole in it. The plaster weapons in the art room were in a different order than they were originally, and one of them had a small circular speck of blood on it, allowing Yuki to know the weapon for Kakeru's murder. He would then revisit the bloody locker, finding the blood to be dried up. He wouldn't know whose blood it is at the time as he would think Kakeru had died recently.
Yuki would finally go to the infirmary as Kanata had spent all her time there since it opened. He would find there were no blood transfusion packs in the fridge. Recalling there had been some since at least the day before, he believes the killer must've taken them.
After Yuki concludes his investigation, Tsurugi would frantically run up to him on the second floor. Tsurugi would ask if a murder had occurred, and Yuki would say yes, as well as direct him to the science lab, art room, library and infirmary. He would then ask Tsurugi how he passed out, and he would reply that he had seen Kakeru's body in the library the night before. During his shock, he was hit from behind and fell unconscious. Tsurugi is notably surprised when Yuki tells him Kanata had died as well as Kakeru, and the two would split as Monokuma calls the students to the trial elevator room.
After Kinji's execution, Monokuma would randomly stop working. Mikako would notice first and urge everyone to run to the warehouse. The students would go down the stairs leading from the hole in the wall to find an empty room with a gate and unlocked door. Monokuma would soon show up and say that he had disposed of what had been down there, leaving everyone crestfallen at their hope of escaping being crushed.
Gambler's Ornament[]
This is a small scene unlocked if you have the Gamble of Ornament or (Gambler's Ornament) present in your possession by the third in-game day of Chapter 3.
Upon leaving the dining hall on the third in-game day of Chapter 3, Haruhiko would also leave, asking Yuki if he would like to try the slot machines in the casino, the reason being that Yuki would always get jackpots due to his luck. If you don't have the present in your possession, Yuki disagrees, and a normal free time event occurs, but if you do, he agrees, and he goes along with Haruhiko.
When Yuki and Haruhiko enter the casino, they find Teruya, Kinji and Satsuki already there. Haruhiko only knew of Satsuki and Teruya being there, so he asks Kinji why he was in the casino. Kinji responds that the casino was noisy and went to investigate, finding Teruya and Satsuki at a slot machine, and called it an "interesting nightlife entertainment". Kinji also explains that although gambling isn't something priests can really do, as long as it's confessed, there isn't a problem. After the conversation about religion ends, Yuki is forced onto the slot machine, the others witnessing and marvelling as he gets one jackpot after another. When Yuki leaves the casino, he is quite annoyed.
Chapter 4[]
The day after Kinji's execution, Akane would come to Yuki's room and ask him to come to breakfast, saying that Haruhiko, Teruya and Mikako wouldn't come as they decided to rest. Yuki does attend the breakfast meet-up, but only Akane and Satsuki are there with him. After breakfast ends, the students excluding Haruhiko, Teruya and Mikako would begin investigating the fourth floor. During the investigation, Yuki would find most of the rooms are locked, including the information processing room, ballroom, and headmaster's office. While investigating the school's office, he talks with Tsurugi about the papers and books on the tables, which all include high-level robotics and technological advancements, as well as chemistry and physics. Due to the subject matter of the books, Tsurugi questions if they are actually in a school, or a laboratory. He also finds a picture of Yamato Kisaragi in the school office, but would leave it with Tsurugi.
When talking with Rei, she presents her hypothesis to Yuki. She explains that the bodies of the children Kinji took care of being decomposed enough to see bones doesn't make sense as in theory, the children had only been dead around 2 weeks. She then tells him that they might've spent a long time within the school and just can't remember it, affirming the statement by bringing up the class photo Yuki had found in the art room and the paper detailing the closure of Kibōgamine Gakuen in the library. She speculates the mastermind had erased their memories. Rei also asks how Mikako acts normally as Yuki had spent the most time with her, to which he replies that she's quiet and mostly dazed, but Rei says that among their classmates, she's the most likely to be the mastermind.
After the investigations, Yuki would find Haruhiko in front of the dining hall. Haruhiko along with Teruya would join in on the investigation reports. Akane and Satsuki had checked the classroom windows, but they were, of course, bolted. They also investigated the hallways as they were apprehensive to investigate the school's office as Tsurugi was in there. Yuki attempts to tell them what he found, but can't bring himself to. Akane calls him out for lying, saying that she saw him talking with Tsurugi and Rei. She also calls out Haruhiko and Teruya for breaking their morning meet-up rule, but Yuki asks her why she's so hopeful. Akane grows angry and almost slaps him before running out of the dining hall. Haruhiko and Teruya comfort Yuki saying they agree, but Satsuki calls them stupid before leaving.
The next morning, Yuki would attend breakfast. Everyone except Tsurugi and Rei were there, and Mikako would ask what had happened the day before to make the mood so tense. Haruhiko explains, and she agrees with Akane and Satsuki, telling the boys not to despair. Mikako leaves, and Monokuma calls all the students to the ballroom shortly after. When they gather there, Monokuma tells them he prepared a dance party to help lift their spirits up. The students are skeptical, so Monokuma prepares a memorandum that he signs to prove his intentions.
The students go into change rooms divided by sex to change into ballroom outfits, Yuki being the first one ready and out. Akane is the next one out, with Teruya coming after her. Haruhiko, Tsurugi, Rei and Mikako all come out, and Satsuki was last as she didn't know how to wear a dress. Monokuma then tells them to form pairs in order to begin dancing. Akane asks Yuki to form a pair first, Satsuki Haruhiko form a pair, Rei and Tsurugi form a pair, and Teruya and Mikako form a pair by default. Music begins to play as they dance, and after they are finished, Monokuma leads them to a dining hall to eat. Everyone is lively and having fun until Teruya asks to save some food, and Akane asks to change her clothes, to which Monokuma denies. He then tells the students they aren't allowed to leave or change, and Tsurugi would bolt out of his seat, Rei walking after him. Yuki, Akane, Mikako and Teruya would follow Rei and Tsurugi, while Haruhiko and Satsuki would stay behind and continue to eat.
Upon arriving at the entrance, Tsurugi would attempt to open the door and fail, finding it to be locked. Akane goes to the dressing room to check their clothes, only to find them gone along with their handbooks. They would all go back to the dining hall to find Haruhiko and Satsuki had eaten almost all the food. Tsurugi and Rei begin to investigate, and the others follow.
Yuki begins searching the dining hall, and while talking with Akane finds that there's more food in the fridges. Satsuki finds a hallway with many doors on both sides, along with big double doors leading into a bigger room. They find that's where they're meant to sleep during their time in the ballroom. The big double doors near the dorms lead to the arsenal, a room housing guns, swords and other weapons. He finds Mikako and Rei in the arsenal, Mikako being especially shaken up while looking at a symbol on a banner in the arsenal. Rei tells Yuki the symbol is the Kisaragi Foundation's symbol, the symbol meaning the lunar February. She explains to Yuki what the company is and that they specialise in robotics and high-grade technology. Rei would grow suspicious of Mikako's knowing behaviour yet refusal to tell, resulting in Mikako attempting to explain and getting a headache.
Tsurugi is found in a big empty room devoid of anything except carpeting. When talking with Yuki, Tsurugi says he will only investigate for himself and not communicate with the others, even Yuki, and angrily tells him to leave. Teruya investigates the changing rooms after Akane says their clothes are gone, only to find she's correct. He speculates with Yuki that the reason their clothes were gone was to take away their student handbooks.
At the dining hall, they all share their findings, Yuki thinking that Monokuma is imprisoning them in the ballroom in order to do something to the outside school areas, thus both providing an escape and preventing them from escape. Monokuma would then call them all to the dance hall to distribute keys to the dorm rooms to each student. He would also announce the fourth motive, which is the ballroom itself, making it impossible to leave unless killing someone. Monokuma also tells them that they aren't permitted suicide, and that the reason for getting rid of their clothes was to prevent them from unlocking the door using their student handbooks. They are also told that all rules except the vandalism and violence against Monokuma rules are void while in the ballroom, there is no set 'night-time', and the morning and night broadcasts will change.
Tsurugi and Rei leave early, and Monokuma would sound the nighttime broadcast, though they don't have to sleep or stay in their rooms. In order to keep order, Yuki instructs Teruya, Akane, Mikako, Haruhiko and Satsuki to stay in their rooms as normal. The next morning, the six gather in the dining hall, Akane distributing the food in an appropriate way. Due to their overeating the previous day, Satsuki and Haruhiko bypass two meals, Mikako bypasses one as she had a late-night snack during her night investigation. The six meet back up again at dinner, only to find the amount of food had decreased more than it should have. The same thing happens again the next morning, so Akane and Yuki both decide to talk to Rei and Tsurugi respectively, as they believe Rei and Tsurugi are exhausting the food supply. Akane talks with Rei in the ballroom dance hall, and Yuki finds Tsurugi in the empty room. When Yuki tells him the food is going missing, Tsurugi tells him that he's only eating one meal a day.
That night at dinner, Yuki and Akane would tell Satsuki, Haruhiko, Teruya and Mikako what they had said to Rei and Tsurugi. Yuki tells them that Tsurugi was only eating one meal a day, and Rei simply insulted Akane by calling her a pig. They begin to lose hope about getting out when Monokuma shows up and says they can leave if they kill, but he tells them he'll reward their investigation. Monokuma had hidden a treasure within the ballroom, and would reward the person who finds it. He also mentions that the prize for finding the treasure is something the students had lost.
In the morning on the sixth day, Akane and the other five students in their group find there's no more food left. Mikako accuses Haruhiko of eating some of the food at dawn, saying that she'd been camping at the dining room entrance since the day before. Mikako also says that Satsuki had eaten the food alongside Haruhiko. Teruya becomes livid with them for eating and blaming it on Tsurugi and Rei. Haruhiko attempts to defend himself, but only exposes himself and Satsuki. Despite the high tension, Yuki opts to investigate harder, encouraging the others to do the same, but Teruya runs out angrily.
That night, Teruya voices his despair at the situation, causing everyone to begin fighting, but Rei would walk in to hear the details of the food situation. Mikako tells her what Satsuki and Haruhiko had done, and when Haruhiko attempts to blame her for the food depletion, she says that neither Tsurugi nor her had eaten very much since the second day. She then shows them some food she had found in Teruya's dorm room, saying he had hidden food for himself without the others noticing. Haruhiko becomes angry and gets in Teruya's face to voice his hypocrisy. Haruhiko shoves Teruya into Yuki, and Teruya does the same to Haruhiko. Yuki and Satsuki restrain the two, and Rei comments that means of escape other than murder is impossible.
The next morning, Yuki would exit his dorm to find Akane waiting for him. She tells him that besides herself and Mikako, none of the others are working together. Satsuki tells Yuki that if anyone attempts to go to the arsenal, Tsurugi would forcibly remove them from it. When Yuki does go to the arsenal, Tsurugi walks out from behind a pillar and tells him to leave. Upon Yuki's questioning, Tsurugi explains he was there because he heard about the fights between Teruya and Haruhiko, and was guarding it to make sure no one took anything. Yuki immediately feels extremely dizzy, so he goes to his room to lie down. He would wake up a day and a half later to Akane banging on his door, and she tells him everyone thought he was dead. He then finds everyone slowly going mad. Mikako won't speak to him and Akane is more hopeful than the rest, but Teruya only repeats "Ididnothingwrong" over and over, Satsuki is running around and seeing butterflies in her own little world, and Haruhiko seems to forget who Yuki is and tries to bite him to see if he's real. When Yuki walks into the arsenal, he has the urge to murder due to his hunger, even running towards the guns, but Tsurugi stops him and pushes him up against the display. He punches Yuki in the cheek, snapping Yuki out of his hunger trance.
Yuki calls everyone besides Tsurugi and Rei to the dining hall to come up with a policy on how to act in the future. Teruya comes up with the idea that two people sacrifice themselves, and opts to pick who by drawing lots. Satsuki, Yuki and Akane agree, but before anyone can do anything else, Tsurugi walks into the dining hall and gives everyone a gun to commit mass suicide. Haruhiko and Yuki attempt to stop him, but Tsurugi throws them into the side of the fridge. Yuki tries to get Tsurugi to stop by telling him that his mindset had been thrown into question after Kinji's trial, and that his actions would have looked like Kinji's in the eyes of others, causing a mental breakdown. Tsurugi goes to tackle him, but he trips on a bit of the carpet. The others tie him up, gag him and leave him in his room, Mikako holding his room key in the event he needs to be let out.
The next morning, Yuki immediately goes to the arsenal to find it locked. Teruya comes by and asks what he's doing, and assists in opening the arsenal door. The two hear a breaking noise, and are blinded and deafened by a flashbang. Once the effects wear off, Yuki walks into the arsenal and finds Haruhiko's dead body sitting against one of the gun displays. Akane, Mikako, Satsuki, Tsurugi and Rei come by due to the noise of the flashbang and find the body, and the body discovery announcement rings. Monokuma immediately gives them all food to recover their stamina in order to investigate. Everyone is also given their normal clothes and student handbooks back.
Monokuma would deliver the 4th Monokuma File, and Yuki first checks it, finding that Haruhiko was killed in the arsenal at around 6AM from a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest. His hand was also ruptured and had two fingers missing. He would check Haruhiko's body, the gunshot wound first and then his right hand, finding that among the two missing fingers, the rest were shattered.
He would find a gun in the corner of the arsenal and go to investigate it, but Teruya would stop him from doing so, saying the gun will blow up. Teruya was under the impression Yuki would attempt to kill him using the gun, but when Yuki asks him why the gun will blow up, he grows panicked and runs out of the arsenal. Yuki would find the flashbang and a smoke grenade near the door to the arsenal, and would then find a wooden plank stuck in the handle of the arsenal door. The flashbang and smoke grenade had been placed on the plank so that when the plank was broken they would fall and be triggered, but it also created a locked-room mystery.
He would see guns scattered across the floor, making it difficult to conclude which one was used as the murder weapon. However, Yuki would find a broken gun in the back of the arsenal with the bullets still in it, unlike the other guns he'd seen. Due to the bullets, Yuki would think the broken gun could be the murder weapon. He would investigate the display at the back of the arsenal and find two fingers belonging to Haruhiko stuck in it. He would wonder why they were so far away from Haruhiko's body. There were also blood traces all through the arsenal as if his body was moved from the back to the front.
Yuki would consult Tsurugi about the crime scene. When asked about the circumstances of Haruhiko's death, Tsurugi would reply that it's unlikely Haruhiko died an immediate death due to the placement of the wound and that the bullet wasn't stuck in Haruhiko's body, meaning he could move around before dying. Tsurugi also says that if the bullet was to be stuck in the body, the kinetic energy would cause the surrounding areas of the body to suffer damage. Due to this, it was likely the bullet made a hole in Haruhiko's lung, and would have died shortly after being shot. Tsurugi would then leave the arsenal.
Once leaving the arsenal, Yuki would talk with Mikako. She would tell him she was monitoring the hallway through the night. Due to her room being right next to the arsenal, she could hear the doors opening and closing, but couldn't hear what was going on inside. She could also see who was walking around by her room, and that Haruhiko went into the arsenal, but wouldn't tell Yuki who else went in, saying she'd tell during the trial.
Yuki would find Tsurugi in front of Haruhiko's door, unlocking it using the key from his corpse. The pair would enter his room, finding a note that asked Haruhiko to come to the arsenal, as the sender had something to say to him. They would deduce the note was written by the killer, but Tsurugi would wonder why Haruhiko went to the arsenal after seeing the note.
After Satsuki's execution, everyone excepting Rei goes to Tsurugi's room to check on his wellbeing, however he would not respond. The next morning, Yuki is woken up by Rei banging on his door, asking him to come to her room. When he does, he finds Teruya, Mikako and Akane there as well. Rei had called them for an operational meeting, and she had built a device to jam the surveillance camera in her room. They discuss the mysteries surrounding Kibōgamine Gakuen and their imprisonment, as well as finding out the identity of the mastermind. Rei also tells them her idea that a long time had passed since they entered the school, and that they just didn't remember it. The morning announcement sounds soon after, and Monokuma would instruct the students to go to the gym. The students, excluding Tsurugi, do so.
Chapter 5[]
Upon meeting in the gym, Monokuma introduces a new transfer student as the motive, a boy named Yamato Kisaragi, the Ultimate Inventor. Yamato introduces himself in a joking manner, posing cutely and introducing himself as an idol, making everyone confused. Monokuma explains he has an abnormality in his brain that causes him to act strangely, and that he was introduced late due to 'circumstances'. Rei grows suspicious of Mikako due to her knowing behaviour at Yamato's presence, and asks how she knows him. Confronted, Mikako suffers a headache and blood pours out of her ears, nose and eyes. She faints, and everyone crowds around her to help her. Monokuma then leaves, and the students opt to take her to the infirmary.
Akane, Teruya, Rei and Yuki meet up in Reis' room immediately after they finish taking care of Mikako. The group piece together the clues relating to Yamato, Hanzo Kisaragi, and the Kisaragi foundation itself, concluding he's the prime candidate to be the mastermind. Monokuma comes in because he hadn't seen any of the students on the surveillance cameras. He also tells them that the fifth and top floor of the school had opened. Monokuma then leaves to check the status of the cameras, and the students disperse to investigate the new areas.
When Yuki exits Rei's room, he finds Yamato in the dormitory area. When Yamato sees him, he grows angry and tries to speak, but is only able to grunt before running off.
Upon going to the second floor, Yuki is stopped by Rei, who tells him the door in the back of the library had opened. He would go to investigate, only finding a notebook on a desk. The pages of the book had been partially torn, but the writing that was legible spoke of a group of people coming to a new place and being unable to leave, causing mass anxiety. The writer also mentions feeling anxious about something among the group, and that if they were correct, everyone would be done for. Yuki assumes the notebook to be a diary, comparing the situation to their imprisonment in Kibōgamine Gakuen.
When he gets to the fifth floor, he is taken aback by its appearance. There are cracks and blood everywhere, and it look more like a laboratory than a school. He would find Teruya in the parlor, asking if he's okay due to his cowardly nature in the past. Teruya says he must upkeep his promise to Satsuki, and Yuki leaves him to investigate the parlor alone after their conversation. Yuki would find a large door to the right of the parlor. Believing it to go to the rooftop, Yuki attempts to open it, but it's locked.
He would find Akane in the collection room, looking up at a photo on the wall. It's a photo of Yamato, documenting him as the third president of the Kisaragi Foundation. They would talk about Yamato and the clues left by his portrait, as well as the different appearance of the fifth floor compared to the rest of the school. Yuki would also find a small notebook on a desk. It's contents are a compilation of articles clipped from newspapers detailing The World's Most Desperate Event in Human History. Its shows pictures of giant Monokumas and mobs in Monokuma masks and talks about the world being in jeopardy due to terrorist attacks. Akane then walks up to him and he shows her the notebook. She's shocked and confused, as such an event would have garnered media coverage, and Yuki points out the date on the newspapers is in the future. The pair resolve it must be fabricated, and Akane holds onto it until they can discuss it with Rei.
Yuki finds Rei in front of the locked door to the record room, finding it's locked by a password. Monokuma pops up and says its locked automatically, and Rei and Yuki ask why it's necessary and what had happened to the fifth floor. Monokuma lets slip that the fifth floor had been left as it was 'at the time', and also tells them the door to the record room will open once they enter the password, but also says that only one person is allowed in, the door being unable to open if someone is already inside.
Yuki goes to the first floor laboratory, which is used as a morgue to store the bodies of the dead students. When he enters through a safety door, he finds 16 capsules, 9 lit up in red, 7 lit up in green. After checking on the red capsules and seeing Ayame's name with an 'X' next to it, he becomes worried and checks the red capsule next to hers, seeing Mitsuhiro's name on it with an 'X'. After checking a green capsule and finding his own name on it with an 'O', he finds the names on the green capsules correspond to the students that are still alive. Monokuma then comes and tells him he was correct in his thinking, showing Yuki Kiyoka's corpse when Yuki says he doesn't believe Monokuma's words. Yuki then proceeds to retch at the sight.
Once investigations conclude, Rei, Akane, Teruya and Yuki meet in the dining hall to discuss their findings. They discuss the appearance of the fifth floor and its differences to the rest of the school, guessing its destruction had something to do with the incident that caused Kibōgamine Gakuen to close down. Teruya had found cooking supplies in the parlor, but the atmosphere made it unappealing to cook. Akane mentions the picture of Yamato in the collection room, also mentioning the first and second representatives, Yusaku and Hanzo. Teruya points out Hanzo was the owner of the school yearbook they had found, and Rei is suspicious about the turnover of representatives so quickly, saying it must've been Hanzo at the time of the entrance ceremony. Akane also shows the notebook of newspaper clippings to Teruya and Rei, Rei taking it for safekeeping. Rei says the record room couldn't be entered due to its security measures, and Yuki talks about the dead bodies of the other students found in the lab and the locked door at the end of the right hall. Rei then talks about the now-opened door at the back of the library, telling them the contents of the notebook. Rei deduces Yamato or Mikako had written the diary, and thanks the group for their support of her before leaving. Akane is worried about Tsurugi and Mikako when Monokuma shows up and says he hasn't seen any signs of Tsurugi waking up.
Shortly after leaving the dining hall, Yuki would find Yamato and Mikako talking in front of Kisaragi's room. Spying on them from behind a plant, Mikako asks Yamato how he came to be the way he is, and tells him he was in a faraway place for the entire killing game up until he was introduced. Yamato is unable to speak properly in response, and Mikako ends up running away due to her headaches. He then talks to Yamato, who is again angry upon seeing him. When Yamato asks him if he's a bad person, Yuki is confused before calming Yamato down and reassuring him he's good. Yamato is more friendly to Yuki after that.
That night, Rei would call Yuki, Akane and Teruya to her room to properly discuss their findings from the investigations. Rei says that her hypothesis that a long time had passed and they just can't remember it might actually be true. When the case of the mastermind is brought up in terms of the mass amnesia, Rei ponders the possibility of the mastermind also being an amnesiac. She explains that using the technological expertise of the Kisaragi Foundation would make it entirely possible to manipulate memories, as well as create extremely human-like AI to power Monokuma. Before Rei can say her final piece however, Monokuma comes in because he couldn't see through the surveillance camera yet again. He speculates something had been done it before slowing down as if he ran out of power. Monokuma slowly powers back up but leaves Rei's room to check the power. Rei ends the meeting and tells them to leave due to Monokuma's suspicions.
The next night, Rei would call Yuki, Akane, and Teruya to her room for the last time. She says that due to a brochure of the second to fifth floors of Kibōgamine Gakuen she had found, she was certain the building they had been in was a building belonging to the Kisaragi Foundation. However, since there was no more information to find, she became discouraged and scared. When Yuki asks why she's suddenly so different, Rei becomes angry and tells him to shut up. Monokuma would come in a bit later due to being unable to see them, and Rei would tell everyone to get out. They wouldn't go into her room again.
The next afternoon, Yuki would see Tsurugi exit the ballroom, but he would not answer when Yuki called out to him.
That night, Yuki would receive a note from Tsurugi telling him to come to the gym with everyone. Rei would knock on his door and tell him she received the same note, and they'd elect to get Akane and Teruya. Yuki would get Teruya, and Akane would join them by coming back from investigating all day. The four would go to the gym to find Tsurugi in there holding a gun. He explains he had been reflecting on his ideologies and was guilty about being unable to properly protect the other students. Due to this guilt, he shoots himself in the forehead despite everyone pleading with him not to. The body discovery announcement sounds and Monokuma appears, but since it was a suicide there wouldn't be a class trial. Yuki insists Tsurugi is alive, and when Monokuma checks his heart, he finds it still beating. Tsurugi is rushed to the infirmary and Monokuma performs surgery on him, telling the others that the bullet was defective and only hit the skull, saving Tsurugi's life. However, the position of the bullet wound meant Tsurugi would live as a vegetable. Mikako would then run up and ask what had happened, but Rei would tell her not to worry. Monokuma would briefly explain Tsurugi's condition and then leave.
When Yuki leaves his room the next morning, he would see Mikako walking past. He gradually becomes more forceful in an attempt to get her to tell the others what she knows, but he would snap out of it when she shows visible pain. She would run away to investigate the fifth floor.
When in the dining hall, Rei would elect to work together to find more information from Yamato and Mikako. Since Mikako was a dead end, she attempted to speak to Yamato, who would immediately ask where Mikako was. Yuki tells him where she was, and Yamato runs out of the dining hall.
Rei, Yuki, Akane and Teruya would chase him to the fifth floor, Yuki getting there last. Once there, they would find a fresh bloodstain on the floor. Yuki along with Rei would investigate the record room, but were unable to get in due to the password. Monokuma would pop up and tell them there was another door to the record room, and Rei would lead Yuki to the ballroom, where they'd find a cloth connecting the second floor to the first floor of the ballroom. They'd climb up and go through the door on the second floor, entering a small room with a door that led to the record room. When they enter the record room, they see a bloody Mikako holding a knife while standing over a dead Yamato.
The body discovery announcement sounds, and Akane and Teruya come to the scene. Despite the obvious suspect, they opt to investigate, and Monokuma brings them the Monokuma File 5. Monokuma then disappears.
Yuki would first check the Monokuma File, which says that Yamato died at 8:30AM due to shock from a laceration. Yuki would check Yamato's body, finding the flesh of his chest had been completely blown apart. The rest of his body, however, was fine.
He would investigate the knife, which was found to be completely clean, as well as a bloody cart in the corner of the record room. The cart could hold a person, but would have had to climb the cloth in the ballroom to get to the record room. He finds the normal entrance leading to the fifth floor is locked from the inside. Rei takes a look along with him and finds that the rule that only one person can enter the record room at a time is good information, and makes Yuki remember the rules for entering the record room.
He would talk with Mikako, who would give him a bloody notebook that belonged to Yamato. One of the pages had 0430 written on it, which is the password to the record room. She then tells Yuki to not ask anymore because she can't say anything more.
When he talks with Akane, she tells him she found piece of flesh in a large clump in the lab, where she investigated while Yuki and Rei were focusing on the record room. Her discovery leads the pair to believe he died in the lab.
He'd also talk with Rei, who would give two main possibilities for the circumstances of the crime. One, Mikako committed the murder. Two, someone else committed the murder and framed Mikako. Either way, she says with certainty that Mikako has no alibi.
When Yuki leaves the record room and climbs down the cloth, he notes only the culprit could have installed it due to the alibis and time of installation. He then goes to the lab, where he finds the clump of flesh as well as a can of anesthetic gas. Rei would come out through the safety door and explain the gas causes temporary paralysis. They agree the culprit must've used it, and when Yuki asks what she was doing in there, Rei responds by saying she checked the corpses of their classmates to check if the flesh came from Yamato. Since the corpses weren't touched, she believes it's Yamato's. She also points out a dying message written by Yamato on the floor that says 'Mikako'. Monokuma would then call the students to the trial ground elevator.
After the announcement, Teruya would run in and tell them to follow him. He takes them to the dormitories, where he says Mikako's room was left wide open. They check the bed in her room, finding the sheet to be missing. Rei deduces the missing sheet must be the cloth in the ballroom. Monokuma would then show up and scold them, telling them to get to the trial elevator room.
During the trial, Yuki would be considered a suspect by Rei, accused to have Mikako as an accomplice to pull off the crime. Wanting to save her own life, Mikako would agree, but Akane would provide evidence as to why the killer isn't Yuki, thus clearing his name. At the end of the trial, Mikako would tell them the secret she knows, that the mastermind had been with them since the killing game began. Her brain would then explode, killing her.
Shortly before Mikako's execution ends, there would be a power outage throughout the building, stopping the execution. Tsurugi would then run in and gather Rei, Yuki and Teruya, telling them he remembered everything and came to save them. He proclaims Akane is the mastermind and calls her the 'Ultimate Despair'. Upon hearing those words, Akane goes into a state of extreme pain in her head, eventually taking off her apron, choker, hair ribbons and bonnet. She introduces herself as the 'Ultimate Despair' as the spare power turns on. While she says that disposing of them would be easy, she still had to meet with someone, so she'd let them through to the final stage.
Chapter 0[]
Yuki wakes up in a classroom to Mikako saying his name. She scolds him for sleeping in class before telling him that Haruhiko planned an activity for the entire class to part in after school, and asks him to join. He would decline her offer, and she'd comment that Yamato is late due to Hanzo's funeral and that he'd been gone two weeks. She then offers Yuki some bread, but he'd decline. She'd then walk back to her desk.
Yuki would then talk with everyone in the classroom. When he talks with Rei, she shuts down his attempt at conversation before it can begin.
Akane and Ayame talk with each other at the back of the class. When Yuki talks with Akane, she'd ask him what was wrong, but doesn't say anything else. When he talks with Ayame, she wouldn't notice him at first, talking with Akane about her discomforts at being unable to run and Akane's habit of calling her 'master', but after she does notice him, she apologises for ignoring him by accident.
Kakeru would notice Yuki right away, and is quite surprised Yuki would talk with him. Yuki would ask about a wound Kanata was treating for him, and he would explain he got it from a conflict with Reserve Course students. When he speaks with Kanata, she is also surprised Yuki would talk with her first, and says she'd treat him after she's done with Kakeru, believing him to be injured. Yuki clarifies he isn't, and she'd offer to help him if the need ever arose.
Yuki would talk with Mitsuhiro while at his desk, Mitsuhiro becoming surprised at Yuki's presence before struggling to remember his name. He decides to chat with Yuki, bragging about a positive response to a video of a goal he scored. He remarks that Yuki doesn't talk and has no friends, but resolves to be friendly as they're classmates, inviting Yuki to play soccer with him at some point.
Kizuna would notice Yuki after asking Mitsuhiro for money, asking Yuki for 50,000 yen to buy the latest phone. She grows dejected when he says he doesn't have that much money, and she offers to talk with him if he ever gets bored.
Haruhiko would ask Yuki if he wanted to play with everyone after school that day, but Yuki wouldn't say anything. Satsuki would notice Yuki after saying her brother got movie tickets for herself and Haruhiko. She remarks Yuki always ignores her and asks what was wrong, but Yuki wouldn't respond.
When Yuki talks with Kiyoka, she would jokingly ask if the sun would rise in the west, then asks why he always avoids them. She says it looks like he's suffering, then offers to take him to an amusement park if he opens up, but he wouldn't say anything.
Yuki would talk with Kinji, Kinji remarking that it's weird Yuki approached him first. He then goes back on those words as he isn't in a position to talk, then asks Yuki if there's something he's worried about. He guesses at what might be troubling Yuki, then suggests showing more interest in the others as he seems to be quite indifferent. Kinji would mention he's attempting to overcome his own anti-socialness by joining the others in the activity, but would tell Yuki to do as he wants.
Yuki talks with Tsurugi, Tsurugi asking him what was wrong. He remarks it's rare for Yuki to talk with others, and asks if Yuki hates their classmates. He says he likes their classmates as he had changed since meeting them, and desires to spend time and have fun with them even as they get older. He says Yuki's eyes look sad, and their conversation ends.
Yuki would talk with Mikako again at her desk, Mikako immediately offering him to play with the others. Yuki declines again, and she'd ask him if he wanted cream puffs. He'd decline again, and she'd call him stupid.
Yuki would talk with Teruya and ask him what he was doing, Teruya responding that he was on a call with his father. He'd also ask if Yuki hated them, wanting to be his friend but Yuki not allowing him to. He'd end the conversation since he was still on the call, but he'd offer to play with Yuki and the others. Yuki would accept the offer.
Time would then freeze, and Yuki would speak with Akane again. She cryptically says that there's things you don't do no matter what, and asks what he would do if he was forced into such a situation, she would begin to say what she would do, but she would be cut off.
Yuki would wake up from his dream a day after the trial, having passed out due to shock at Akane's true persona. She would suddenly pop up in his room and tell him to go to the dining hall to talk with the others.
When he gets to the dining hall, Tsurugi would tell them he was okay despite his injuries and explains the nature of their lost memories. They first discuss their mass unconsciousness in the entrance hall, Tsurugi saying they might've been in contact with the mastermind since the beginning, but would ask the others to hit him as atonement for his previous actions before he continues. Rei hits him first, then Yuki, then Teruya.
Tsurugi explains most of their memories during school, remarking some people had changed between that and the killing game. He says Yamato had been the centre of helping the others to grow, and Yuki, Rei and Teruya realise he was a classmate as well. They become confused as to why he wasn't with them at the entrance hall when they gave their introductions, but Tsurugi explains that had been the second time they introduced themselves, the first occurring on the first day of their school life when Yamato was present. He then says that some people were different from the school life to the killing game, such as Mikako, who was loud and cheerful, and Akane, who was more respectful during school.
He then begins to mention Junko Enoshima and The Most Desperate Event in Human History, but Akane would show up and stop him, banning him from saying anything he knows. She tells them they need to pass a class trial to fulfill a promise she made, and that if they get the answers right, they'll get to escape safely, but if get it wrong or can't answer, she'll execute them.
The students would then begin investigating.
Chapter 6[]
Yuki would go to the second floor of the dorms, but is stopped by Tsurugi. Tsurugi tells him he had a different personality during school, being cold and cut off when dealing with the others. This leads him to ask if Yuki was really Yuki Maeda, to which Yuki would say yes and that his current personality was real. Yuki would question if Tsurugi was allowed to tell him this due to his ban, but Akane would pop in and allow it.
Akane and Tsurugi would leave, and a Monokuma would direct Yuki to the first electrical room on the floor. In the room was a computer with files on it. The first file would say an incident that shook the school occurred after the 78th class entered Kibōgamine Gakuen. The school then rushed to cover up the incident by recruiting the next class early, and the 79th class entered the school the same year as the 78th one. Another file contained information about Izuru Kamukura, the artificially created Ultimate Hope. He had incited an incident, causing the school to accept the 79th class earlier than usual and attempt to re-implement the Izuru Kamukura Project, but it wasn't achieved due to a bigger incident that followed. This bigger incident would cause the beginning of the world's collapse.
Directed to the second electrical room, Yuki would find another computer with files on it. The first would tell him of The Biggest and Most Desperate Event in the History of Kibōgamine Gakuen, where Izuru murdered 13 members of the student council. The school covered it up, but a student had known and spread the information to the students. This led to the Reserve Course students rioting, inciting the school's collapse. Another file would document The World's Most Desperate Event in Human History, when the riots of the Reserve Course students grew out of control as the incidents spread through the media. Kibōgamine Gakuen and the world would about to succumb to despair, with a group called the Ultimate Despair in the middle of it.
When directed to the third room, Yuki would find Rei in there. They would read the contents of the computer together, including a file detailing the Ultimate Despair. They were a group centered around the original Ultimate Despair, Junko Enoshima. The second file would go into detail about the murder class life Junko had planned to further spur despair. She erased the memories of the 78th class students and set up a killing game to broadcast to the world. Rei notes the 78th class killing game hadn't happened yet, but is confused as to how the 78th class were the only documented survivors. Rei would stay in the third room, while Yuki would head to the fourth.
A file on the computer in the fourth room outlines notes on the Kisaragi Foundation. Junko had requested technical assistance to carry out her plans and asked the Kisaragi Foundation for help, but Hanzo had known what she intended to do, and Junko suffered losses as a result. Due to the losses, she withdrew from the Kisaragi Foundation. The second file spoke Ultimate Despair External Agents, people who had been spreading despair in Junko's name from outside Kibōgamine Gakuen. It mentioned people had been such agents and then were accepted into Kibōgamine Gakuen as students, becoming both Ultimate Despair and remaining external agents. Junko had entrusted a special mission to one of these dual agents. Monokuma would then direct Yuki to the school to learn more about the killing game itself.
Yuki would to go the fourth floor to investigate the information processing room and headmaster's room. Teruya would stop him in a hallway and question the empty room within the ballroom. The pair would resolve to not worry about it and Teruya would comfort Yuki as he looked worried about Akane. Teruya would then leave to investigate.
In the information processing room, Yuki would find a Monokuma in front of a wall of monitors that showed footage of the school. This Monokuma would summon another one to the room, and the second one would explain the Monokuma in front of the monitors controlled all others. Yuki would also see an army of Monokumas, and a monitor would turn on and explain his existence. He had been created by the Towa Group and had impeccable combat skills. He used to have poor tactical performance, but using an extremely human-like A.I named Alter Ego, Junko was able to copy her personality into Monokuma. He would then tell Yuki that his only role at this point was to make Akane's wish come true. Yuki would then suddenly remember a previous use of a memory manipulation device by a girl named Ryoko Otonashi, the memory interrupted by a headache. Rei would ask him what was wrong, but he'd say he was fine. Rei would ask him if he believed Monokuma was Yamato's killer, and Yuki would assume Yamato and Mikako had been killed for a specific purpose. He would then leave.
In the headmaster's office, Yuki would find a computer that was turned on, but the screen off. Beside the computer was a photo of Yamato and Mikako as children posing with Hanzo. Akane would pop in and tell him as such, telling a story about how Mikako was abandoned and then taken in by Hanzo, then leave. Yuki would find Tsurugi in front of a cabinet reading some papers. He would tell Yuki to read them as he might remember something. Yuki would read through the papers to find the student registry of the 79th class. He finds an inconsistency in his profile, slipping into an unknown memory before Teruya snaps him out of it.
The other scattered papers on the floor are written notes out of order. The 6th entry speaks of the writer's classmates, Mikako in particular, but is bothered about something they heard before the entrance ceremony. The 8th entry talks of a job they got done involving wiretapping tools. The 10th entry details how they were able to overhear a conversation between the headmaster and the council committee talking about the incident involving the murder of the student council.
The 50th entry details the writer, thinking about stopping people in advance of an unspecified event. Mikako insists on trusting them, but they are debating trusting everyone or saving everyone's lives. The 27th speaks of the writer going crazy due to being forced to hide crucial information and being unable to calm a situation down. The 28th entry states Mikako had noticed they were troubled, and they resolve to protect their friends. The 35th entry states their father had died, commenting on the suddenness of his passing. They wonder if the person involved is within the school as their father's death means they shall have to leave to attend the funeral and the inauguration of the 3rd President.
The 1st entry outlines the writer's excitement at attending Kibōgamine Gakuen as students the following day, and the 2nd entry says they heard a council member say they'd been a murder in the school in passing. The 16th entry, they had seen a murder of one of the council members take place through a hidden camera. The 18th entry, they set up a student database with Rei to find the identity of the killer, finding it to be Mukuro Ikusaba, the Ultimate Soldier. This leads them to believe Mukuro is the mastermind behind the incidents at Kibōgamine Gakuen. The 23rd entry, they find out Junko is the mastermind and that she's planning something big. This leads them to question their safety due to their meddling. Entry 42 speaks of the writer's relief they're able to save their classmates themselves.
Yuki deduces that Yamato had written the notes and that he was trying to protect them. He'd then go to the fifth floor.
When at the fifth floor, he'd find Monokuma blocking Rei and Teruya from entering the locked door. Akane would allow it however, and the door was opened to reveal a beach overlooking the sea. They'd venture out but would be forced back in, and Monokuma and Akane would leave. Monokuma then shortly after calls them to the entrance hall to go to a special stage for the class trial.
When going down to the fourth floor, Yuki would hear a faint voice from the headmaster's office. He'd go there to find the computer screen on and the voice would speak. They'd say they'd created a memory storage device to resist a memory-erasing machine, also mentioning possible side effects. A detonator had been placed in the machine as insurance, and they say to kill them if they can't finish the job. The computer would then show a figure telling Yuki to 'watch out for Utsuro' before turning off. The name 'Utsuro' causes a headache-inducing memory of someone questioning how they can have everything they want yet still be in despair. The memory cuts to Yuki meeting up at the entrance hall with the others.
As the trial progresses, more truths are uncovered, Yuki experiences headaches that gradually get worse. When the others realise there's more than one mastermind, Akane would get them to remember by asking them their origins. When it gets to Yuki, he finds himself unable to remember his mother's name, or the name of his school. This prompts the others to realise he's the other mastermind and triggers a series of flashbacks of Utsuro's memories.
The flashback begins with Yamato introducing himself to Utsuro their first day at Kibōgamine Gakuen. It would continue a while later as he talks with Akane about their plans with Junko. Akane would show great dependency on Utsuro until Ayame would walk in, claiming she heard someone crying. Akane would cover their tracks by lying to Ayame and would leave with her. Utsuro would then be seen spying on Yamato, who had overheard about the death of a council member, and would then cut to a while later as he meets up with Haruhiko and Satsuki in front of the dorms. The trio overhear Yamato and Mikako fighting due to Yamato's troubles. It would then cut to the day the tragedy broke out, Utsuro witnessing everything take place as Yamato takes everyone on a truck to take them to the airport. There is then a long sequence of the class riding on the back of the truck, then their first night at the Kisaragi Foundation building. The flashback ends with Monokumas invading the lab and killing the workers, and Utsuro and Akane capturing the students.
Yuki would continue to suffer the headaches, in disbelief of the truth of his identity. He'd then find himself in a realm of his subconscious, a figure telling him he's a false appearance with false memories, a copy of someone else. The figure would give him a choice of two doors, a white one or a red one.
Hope/Bad Ending[]
If Yuki chooses the white door, he would remain Yuki Maeda. All of his memories return, including knowledge of what he did as Utsuro, his original identity. Akane would be livid at the failed experiment, and eventually realise Utsuro didn't want to live anymore, allowing it to happen. She'd lament the possibility of changing his mind before everything happened, and would make a Monokuma impale Yuki with its paw. The last thing Yuki hears before he falls unconscious is Akane crying.
Despair/True Ending[]
If Yuki chooses the red door, he would disappear forever, Utsuro assuming the body and waking up. He would stop screaming, and Utsuro would introduce himself. Tsurugi would confirm that was how Yuki looked and acted during school. Teruya would wonder how both masterminds could survive and regain their memories given their situation, and Akane would explain that Utsuro has 'heavenly luck', an ability that bends the world to his wants and will. He then resolves to end the killing game by killing Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya. Akane would be apprehensive, and when a fragment of Yuki would tell them to not give up, the trio would refuse to give in to Utsuro.
Utsuro decides to tell them the truth of their loved ones to send them into despair. To Tsurugi, he says that the leader of the despair External Agents was his father, Juu Kinjo. The false notion that Tsurugi had died sent the man into despair and was the reason for all the anarchy in Japan. He'd also say that Juu had eaten the remains of the corpse of Tsurugi's childhood friend, Sasaki Kouhei. With that, Tsurugi would be sent into despair.
To Rei, he'd say that her parents, who'd she'd thought had abandoned her, actually loved her. When they'd gone bankrupt with outstanding loans to dangerous people, they'd arranged for her to be taken in by a relative, but the relative betrayed them, leaving her on the streets. When they'd heard Rei had died, they went to Junko, but Utsuro purposefully doesn't tell her what happened to them after that as it sends Rei into despair.
To Teruya, Utsuro would explain that they'd gotten the funds to convert the lab and build the executions from his father, Kojiro Otori. Overcome with despair from Teruya's death, he donated large sums of money from his business to Junko's cause. As he successor to the business, Utsuro would say Teruya was to blame for his friend's deaths, sending him into despair.
Utsuro would then summon Monokumas to kill the trio, and Akane would stop them when they got too close. She would regain her wits and apologise to Utsuro, but he'd discover she'd become obsessed with their classmates, and order her death as well. Just before the Monokumas move, the monitor Monokuma was using to watch the trial take place is overwritten by an Alter Ego of Yamato. He'd spur and inspire hope in Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya, and when Tsurugi finally wakes up, he gathers Teruya and Rei to surround Utsuro from behind. Akane would get slashed by a Monokuma attempting to attack Rei, and the self-destruct sequence would be set off.
Utsuro and Akane would be left behind in the collapsing building as Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya escape. Utsuro was tired of his life, but Akane would plead with him to leave when she realises he's intentionally trying to die. She'd weakly say she'd always be with him before going silent. Utsuro would wonder if he could've had a chance at a normal life had he not been born with his divine luck before the building crashes into the sea. He then dies from drowning, whilst Akane survives, having divine luck transferred to Akane.
Chapter EX[]
Talent & Abilities[]
Luck[]
Called "Heavenly Luck" by Akane, Utsuro was born with the talent of fortune, an ability that granted everything he wanted and brought luck to the people around him. Whatever he wills, will come to reality; for example, Tsurugi was able to survive a gunshot to the head simply because Yuki didn't want him to die. This is also how he came to resemble the real Yuki so greatly, as his luck changed his body to be the same. However, the flip side of this is that only the result exists in his power, without any process. Since he can't have any sense of accomplishment or effort, he became bored and jaded with the world due to this ability, as nothing had any meaning.
