Appearance[]

Yuri is a short young high school boy with dark gray eyes that have a white star-shaped detail in the irises, referencing his talent. His scraggly hair is a mixture of two colors: pale reddish pink and apple green.

His outfit consists of a dark teal blazer with gold buttons over a long-sleeved white dress shirt and a gold and black striped tie. On the pocket of his blazer is a gold emblem, which is his previous high school symbol. He wears brown pants held up with a black belt, grey socks and black tennis shoes with white accents.

He also carries a red and white rocket-shaped backpack with black straps that have two green and blue round pins, likely representing planets, precisely representing Uranus and Neptune.

In his illustration, Yuri wears a typical astronaut suit without the helmet.

Outside of the simulation Yuri's revealed to be older than his VR appearance, approximately in his late twenties to early thirties. He's shown to have the same scraggly pale red/apple green hair, though it appears to be slightly messier than it is in the simulation. He's also shown to have a more muscular appearance, and is taller than previously shown.

Yuri wears a long-sleeved white shirt, a dark blue vest with yellow buttons and golden-yellow linings, a red ascot with a wavy white end with a faux red gem fitting as a centre piece. He otherwise wears a pair of black trousers, white socks, and a pair of brown shoes.

Name Etymology[]

Yuri's name is a reference to Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who is known for being first human to journey into outer space in 1961.

In Japanese, Yuri's first name means "rational". It uses the kanji 有 () meaning "existence" or "possessing (something)", and 理 (ri) meaning "logic" or "reason". Interestingly, in neo-confucianism, 理 () is defined as the underlying principles of the cosmos–the existence of everything or the universe. His surname Kagarin uses the kanji 加 (ka) meaning "add" or "increase", 賀 (ga) meaning "congratulations", and 鈴 (rin) meaning "bell".

Personality[]

Yuri has completely "dedicated his life to women", a phrase he describes as his life's motto.[3] He is flirtatious to women, notably referring to Sora as "baby" during his free time events, even ones he’s only recently met. Despite sometimes making suggestive comments, he remains chivalrous towards women, even confirming to Sora he wouldn't touch a woman without her permission when she questioned why he invited her to his dorm room.[3] On the other hand Yuri is harsh to men going as far to ignore them and refer to them as ‘scum’. He describes himself as “a being that was born only for women” [4] while later describing his views on men being equal to pebbles on the streets[4], sometimes exaggerating his hate of men by saying he gives them “headaches”. Due to this behaviour though all of the female cast, including Setsuka who’s notably able to interact with anyone else, grows to despise him quite quickly, even being called a ‘pervert’ by a few of them. Further showcasing Yuri's hate for men he's shown to refuse telling his findings to Nikei, however openly talking about it when Emma asks what he'd found. Despite this, he isn't entirely against the idea of correcting Kanade when she comes to the conclusion that Utsuroshima is tropical, inferring that he'd correct women in certain cases.

He describes himself as "a veteran of being kidnapped" [4], however he doesn’t act panicked when coming to his own conclusion he and the other classmates were kidnapped. Instead he tries to retain a realistic outlook on the situation, soon going on to say that he’s just doing his best to enjoy what he can in the newfound situation.

Since childhood, Yuri had developed the dream of being remembered as a saviour by a woman, even if it means sacrificing his life for this to come true. In the new and threatening situation of the killing game this fact soon comes to light, which is revealed to be entirely true according to Kokoro's emotional detection. Based from this it may be implied Yuri has a somewhat low morality view on life, as long as it would help another woman, based from this information.

In certain cases Yuri may suddenly say a sentence or two in Russian almost out of nowhere, a likely result and habit developed from his childhood. Despite this he quickly returns to Japanese soon after realising this. Yuri is also one of the four most intelligent participants[5].

History[]

Early Life[]

Yuri was born into the wealthy mixed Japanese-Russian Kagarin family, known for their powerhouse astrological industry. As he grew up, he was taught everything about space by his father, as well as undergoing various training programs to prepare himself for spaceflight.[3] During his childhood, he was kidnapped over 37[3] times because of his high-status family.

Two years prior to the Killing Game during a stay in Japan with his family, Yuri befriended the young, but highly-skilled maid Akane who was hired to temporarily work for the family for a month. In his curiosity, Yuri asked about Akane's past, which she became extremely despaired by, but after perking up she described a boy who saved her who disappeared after, and even then she was attempting to find him through her maid work. This solidified Yuri's dream of wanting to be remembered by as a saviour to a woman forever, especially in the event of his death.[3][6] After this key event, his family went back to Russia.

Utsuroshima Killing School Trip[]

Yuri was one of the fourteen students that introduced himself to both Sora and, albeit reluctantly, Yuki. He's the first student to theorise that everyone on Utsuroshima was kidnapped and held captive on the island for an undisclosed reason.

SDRA2 - Prologue CG - Beach Party

Sora and Yuki would eventually conclude their introductions with everyone else, splitting up and gathering all fourteen other students to the beach for a group discussion of what they know of the situation. During the discussion Yuri would add onto his earlier statement about the situation, saying "As a veteran of being kidnapped, I've got a feeling this must be a kidnapping on a grand scale" which would spark a consideration among the group, though it'd be ultimately pushed aside by a majority of the students. The topic is changed by Setsuka not too long afterwards suggesting that the group should go for a swim in the ocean, which an enthusiastic Yuri immediately agrees to. He soon joins in with the group of students that go into the ocean seen to be talking with Hajime before Yuki ultimately decides that he wants to join the group. The moment he steps foot into the ocean, however, every student would fall unconscious. Later on in a darker environment they wake up discovering that those who'd changed prior were now back in their talent uniforms. They would soon be cut off by an anonymous announcement by a not-yet-seen Monocrow, requesting that every student head to the centre park for the opening ceremony.

SDRA2 - Prologue CG - Monocrow declaring the Killing Game

After arriving at the centre park, the group are met with a, for the most part, quiet environment. Confusion would cloud the group until a voice can be heard. With further confusion met for a moment, as some of the students such as Hajime vocalised this with a "What's goin' on", but this was soon answered once Monocrow would appear in front of the group. Panic would spread among some of the students, especially Yoruko, Yuki and Iroha, while Yuri stayed silent for the most part, making a lone comment of how Monocrow looked like a sparrow. Mikado would soon make his attempt to trick the group, by claiming he'd protect the group. While Yuri was notably reluctant in doing so, the environment would change once more as the sound of a gunshot rang through the centre park, with a bullet hitting and breaking half of Mikado's mask. After this happens two figures would appear before the group, introducing themselves as members of the Kisaragi Foundation. Despite this Yuri would appear unphased, to a degree, by the situation, commenting that "the mask protected him". The pair would expose Mikado as the mastermind and then make their attempts to calm the group but, when that failed with them generally panicked or confused, would soon made an attempt to arrest Mikado. Using his magic, however, Rei would be sent backwards a bit after being burnt as Mikado would soon comment that "17 was over the limit".

SDRA2 - Prologue CG - Execution (New) (12)

Fire would surround Rei as she was slowly being burnt alive, until they soared high into the sky and died down moments afterwards revealing that she had completely disappeared, only leaving behind ashes. Once Rei was executed Mikado changed his focus on Teruya who he soon sent flying into the air. While Yuri remained rather silent on what had just happened Shobai would lunge towards Yuki soon after, however instead stabbing Sora after she jumped in front of the knife to protect Yuki.

For the entirety of the week Yuri attended every morning meet-up with the other participants. For a majority of the conversations he wouldn't take the lead role in talking about his investigations, and was notably troublesome to get information from having to have a female ask about it for this to happen. On the other hand, Yuri still managed to notice certain details- such as the island not being a tropical location, and Mikado's cooking being safe to eat.

SDRA2 - Chapter 1 CG - Yuri Kagarin claiming he'll die for a woman

A little later into the week however this started to change as tensions began to rise in the group. Yuri, with his childhood dream of sacrificing his life to be seen as a saviour by a woman, decided to take advantage of the situation by offering his life to any of the woman on Utsuroshima. This specifically became in action after Hibiki began to breakdown from stress, originally offering his life for her until he changed it. There was a momentary pause in atmosphere as the group was taken aback from what he had just said. Some chose to disbelieve him and some appeared confused, or remained silent in shock. Not before long though Kokoro decided to talk up for the people who didn't believe what he was saying were his honest thoughts, instead confirming that these were indeed his absolute honest thoughts with the use of her psychological and emotional skills developed throughout the years. After a brief conversation the morning meetup soon concluded, and everyone went their separate ways for a few hours.

The Party[]

SDRA2 - Chapter 1 CG - Party

Later on during the same day Yuri would be invited to a group party after Hajime's request, stating at the time that he believed there was still good deep inside of him. Every participant and Monocrow, per Mikado's personal invitation to him, would gather to the guesthouse. Despite his attendance however he quickly states that he didn't want to be there, and quickly asked if any of the female participants were still unwilling to take up on his offer of sacrificing himself for one of their escapes. Setsuka quickly tried to change the conversation, however, revealing that the party was meant to be a mood-lifter and planned after noticing Hibiki's demeanour throughout the game.

Soon, the party began, and after a brief verbal altercation between Kanade and Hibiki revealed that the drinks had been tampered with and now held alcohol inside of them. Without an initial reaction to this he would still later go on to call Shinji 'pathetic' for already haven gotten drunk despite the short amount of time since the party's start, then he would later comment that he was the only one worthy of drinking with Setsuka after his previous comment about Shinji.

The party soon ended and, as one of the people to have gotten drunk during it, he would have to be helped back by one of the people that decided to stay behind, accepting help from his killer; Hajime.

Fate[]

SDRA2 - Closing Argument - Chapter 1 (11)

During the night, after Yuri agreed to this deal, Hajime began to walk Yuri away from the guesthouse. Instead of going back to the Monocruise however, as he agreed, he took a detour with an unconscious Yuri to the bell tower, taking advantage of his drunkenness to start his murder plan. At arrival Yuri was injected with a shot of liquid anaesthetic which would render him unconscious for a much longer time period than what would've been allowed from his already-unconscious state. The killer, after this, would begin to practice their method of killing Yuri, making sure every measurement they had made would be perfect, practicing all throughout the night and till early morning.

SDRA2 - Closing Argument - Chapter 1 (14)

Once the morning announcement had gone off Hajime had intended to sneak back into the Monocruise, securing an alibi for himself for that time period. However, the doors suddenly opened as he was approaching the Monocruise, with Yoruko walking out immediately after. They quickly hid began some bushes, nervously thinking of what they could do, but ultimately deciding to use a spare shot of liquid anaesthetic to render Yoruko unconscious as well, worried that their entire case would be ruined if she went to the bell tower. This decision, however, helped him.

SDRA2 - Closing Argument - Chapter 1 (22)

Hajime quickly ran back to the bell tower with the unconscious Yoruko, becoming later and later for his morning exercises with Shinji. To save time going up and down the stairs Hajime used his rope system to jump down, removing one of the hooks from Yuri's calves to make this possible, taking Yoruko up to her spot afterwards then using this method to jump back down to the ground. With this shortened time period he met up with Shinji inside of the Monocruise, but mid-jog he made up an excuse to briefly depart from Shinji to rearrange Yuri's hook placements. Once this was complete he sent a distress message to Yuki- who panicked, and left with Sora in tow over to the bell tower.

At arrival Sora and Yuki would come across Yuri, who had finally woken up after the effects of the anaesthetic had worn off. During a brief conversation Yuri would say he was "blessed" to have been spending his final moments alive with Sora, though dismissing that it was perfect due to Yuki's presence, going onto a small ponder as he began to think of who may have killed him, beginning to list the female participants and rejecting Sora's and Yuki's attempts to pull the hook out of his calf. Soon afterwards Hajime jumped off of the bell tower using the mechanism he had created to send Yuri up and into the bell, through razor wires, landing and cutting the rope leading for him to drop to his death at the bottom of the tower ground. Once Yoruko woke up and was questioned by Sora and Yuki, the body discovery sound would go off.

Legacy[]

In the events of the class trial Sora manages to solve Hajime's crime through the evidence collected, and multiple facts that made it only possible for him to be the killer, namely in-trial alibis by the people who stayed behind, Hajime's obsession with health, and Hajime's talent. Despite this many difficulties came within the trial due to Hajime's decisions. Shinji, a close friend with Hajime, struggled to believe that Hajime could've possibly killed someone, which Hajime later apologises for at the end of the trial. Another came from Hajime's impulse decision to render Yoruko unconscious, which shifted blame on her for a portion of the trial, until the evidence began to point to Hajime instead. After 'voting time' concludes he's sent to his execution, and then into a limbo-like area called the Void Theatre.

During chapter five the remaining participants find a video clip of Yuri, though now bearing a more muscular appearance and different outfit. In chapter six he's revealed to be the creator of Monocrow and that Monocrow was kidnapped for the game so Mikado could reprogram it to be the mascot of the game. He's also revealed to not be a super high school level student, and more rather a citizen of Japan[6].

Talent & Abilities[]

Spaceman[]

Super Danganronpa Another 2 - Yuri Kagarin Introduction (Korean)

As the Super High School Level Spaceman, Yuri is knowledgeable upon anything that comes to space, going as far to describe himself as being more knowledgeable upon the subject compared to everyone else. He, on the other hand, also describes his talent as being an "artificial talent" - one earned by his father spending a fortune on him[3].

Yuri has been learning about the subject of space ever since a young age, despite not having much of an interest in it. Despite this Yuri ultimately decided to learn about space due to his father's aspirations and knowledge that, in his own word; "it would've been the same if it was something other than space". After numerous years of studying and research of everything to do with space Yuri was later put through training programs to go to space, still retaining the memory of what exactly happened even years after this event. Despite this it's not known if Yuri has actually been to space or not [3].

In chapter six it's revealed that Yuri's talent was fabricated and that his memories were likely altered with to make him believe he actually had a talent still. It's unknown whether he was actually skilled enough to become a 'super high school level'.

Technological Skills[]

During Chapter 6 it's revealed that Yuri was the original creator of Monocrow, then called "Yuri"[6], though it was later stolen when Yuri was kidnapped. Due to this fact it can be believed that Yuri had knowledge of creating robotic models and programming to an unknown degree.
